Schefter on Vernon Gholston's contract

Anyone who complains about Maroney should read this before complaining again:

7. Plenty is riding on Vernon Gholston's first sack. The Jets' defensive end, New York's 2008 first-round pick, keeps getting closer and closer to the first sack of his NFL career. According to NFL Players Association documents, Gholston needs only one sack to trigger a $9.1 million roster bonus that the Jets would have the option to pick up next March. Gholston also could activate the $9.1 million bonus with 20 percent play time this season or one fumble recovery. If the Jets declined to pick it up, Gholston then would become an unrestricted free agent. This is an escalator that the Jets worked into Gholston's contract last offseason, when the two sides agreed to restructure his deal. So one sack, one fumble recovery, one interception or 20 percent play time could mean a big payday -- or it could punch Gholston's ticket out of New York.

This guy must flat-out not care. Sure he was a pre-combine workout wonder, but on the freakin' field he broke Vrabel's Big 10 record for sacks in a season and most came against Big 10 Big Boys like Wisconsin and Michigan.

He had all of the physical tools so he must have nothing but Cheese Whiz between the ears. I'm still amazed he was regarded up there with Mayo.

Can you imagine if there was a few seconds left and Woodhead "fumbled" the ball to Gholston and it REQUIRED the Jets to pay $9 million?

Don't know about tackle. But as he hasn't had a single sack EVER. I can safely say he hasn't had a sack against the NEP.

No we are not. If he gets a sack...it invokes a $9 million dollar option.

Meaning the Jets either have to pay him or cut him at the end of the season making him an unrestricted free agent. Which they probably will do anyway sack or no sack.

Even before the draft, every time you heard about details about his personality and about his personal life, you began to wonder if there wasn't something a bit off about him.

Football players are like a pack, yet here was a loner that lives off campus with non football playing room mates???? Makes me question how important football is to him.

So in other words, Gholston is going to be a free agent next season no matter what. If he gets a sack or plays 20% of the snaps, the Jets have to cut him to avoid paying him $9.1 million bonus. If he doesn't reach that level, he will be cut because he sucks.

It was a stupid contract because if Gholston was just above average, that option bonus would be a tough call. Since he sucks really bad and can't even reach an each option bonus trigger like getting one sack in a season or playing 20% of the snaps, it is an easy decision for the Jets. Bye! Bye! Vernon.

Staggeringly bad contract clause. For the sake of his career, I hope the clause can be waived. If not, perhaps he too can get a job as a train conductor.

But, if you're the Jets, why would you rush to bring him back, or even bring him back at all, under those circumstances? It's one thing to keep him around to save face. It's another to bring him back if you've already cut him.
