Merely a guy to cover TEs?
Possible dime safety?
Spikes replacement?
Ninkovich replacement?
Incorporating 2-5 sets (Wilfork-Kelly)(Chandler-Mayo-Spikes-Hightower-Buchanan)
Incorporating more pseudo 34 sets? (Kelly-Wilfork-Deaderick)(Chandler-Mayo-Hightower-Buchanan)

Less so is the Buchanan pick who is almost a prototypical 34 OLB for Belichick. Deaderick is passible as a LDE, but Kelly and Love can't handle 5tech RDE.

I think at first he is exclusively a sub player. One who can both rush and cover the flats and the middle.

Eventually I expect them to run a defense where only the two defensive tackles are guaranteed to rush. Like our defenses of old teams won't know if Spikes, Mayo, Hightower, Jones, and Collins will rush or cover the pass.

I expect him to be a situational and rotation player this year but he does provide insurance for them if Spikes next deal becomes a problem, which is a real possibility imo. in that case I see Hightower becoming their next ILB in the 3-4 and Mayo and Collins staying outside. good pick, i like the player and he definitely meets a need.

Nothing new with BB...always thinking a year or 2 ahead.

Zone blitzes, overload blitzes and stunts.

Line the guy up behind Jones, sit back and watch the fireworks.

To start with he's likely going to be in on passing downs so it's easy to get creative with what to dial up with him on the field, use his athleticism! Don't keep the same obvious blitzes used last year which mainly had no imagination to them at all.

With him & Jones on the same side make the QB & T think about who is going to be rushing (if not both) drop Jones, rush Collins. Rush them both and have Jones dive inside and Collins outside and a play I personally love, have Wilfork/Kelly/Armstead clear the A gap for Collins to shoot it.

Don't always rush him either, put him in man on a TE or in a zone to obliterate a RB coming out of the backfield.

Ninko's replacement. Younger, athletic, and faster. But does he have Ninko's instincts?

Armstead..

Armstead will be a 3 technique. He's rarely been used outside this far in his career. It's not impossible though and 5 technique might be a better fit for him in the NFL since you don't have as much room off the LOS as you do in the CFL.

When we tried to sign Red Bryant I think it was a sign that we've been trying to play a 4-3 under defense which is what I think we'll be doing. The 4-3 under can look a lot like a 3-4 at times, it's just a matter of how much meat you want to put at the LDE spot and whether your RDE is in a 2 or 3 point stance. The advantage of the 4-3 under is to ensure your 5 technique DE (Chandler Jones) and your SAM LB (Jamie Collins) get 1on1 match ups against the OT and TE respectively.

Now, you're going to say "But VrabelJr, Hightower is our SAM!" but I think we drafted Hightower knowing he would take Spikes' spot at MLB but worked Hightower in at SAM last year just to get our best players on the field. Hightower is great at shedding blocks, stuffing the run and playing zone but isn't fast enough to play against RBs and TEs in man. Hightower's strong suits scream MLB/ILB. Now, a SAM's job is to rush the passer, set the edge, chip the TE and cover the TE. Enter Jamie Collins.

Collins will be responsible with chipping off on the TE every play and either releasing the TE to our nearest Safety and rushing the passer or manning up against the TE in coverage, which is something none of our current LBs can do. A big responsibility for Collins will be to set the edge as teams will look to run at him and this is an area I think he needs to learn and improve in.

Some quick fronts I think we'll see:

RDE/ROLB - Jones
RDT - Armstead/Kelly/Deaderick
NT/LDT - Wilfork/Love
LDE - Ninkovich/Francis/Bequette

WILL: Mayo/Fletcher
MIKE: Hightower/Spikes
SAM: Collins/Ninkovich

Now keep in mind this is the pass happy NFL so we'll be in our sub defense a lot, which is going to be smaller up front. Probably something more like:

RDE: Jones
RDT: Armstead/Deaderick
NT: Wilfork/Love
RDE: Ninkovich/(Hightower?)

MIKE/WILL: Mayo
SAM: Collins

Heard one comment (forgot who said it) that he hasn't filled out his frame yet. Has anyone heard any talk about that? Maybe they'll have him put on 10-15 pounds. Have not checked his weight over the years but with all the position changes it seems like he has been getting bigger every year.

"Dolphins traded up to #3 for Dion Jordan and Bill Belichick took us at #52 & #226?"

That might have been me in another thread. He looks a little lean in his upper body. He's 6'4", 240 or 250lbs, different sites list him at different weights. He has room for another 10-15 which will help tremendously in setting the edge. But if we stick Collins at SAM like I predict, we just have to put a LDE that is good against the run next to him to help him out.

Yep, I see this as an opportunity pick. A super-rare athlete with good size who is both an explosive pass rusher and a converted DB who's smooth in coverage? In the bottom half of round 2? Don't mind if I do.

Let's compare to the gold standard for outrageously athletic DE/OLBs from smaller schools:

DeMarcus Ware
6'4.0" 251 4.56/2.71/1.62 27 38.5 10'02" 4.07 6.85
Senior stats: 62 tackles, 6 sacks, 16 TFL, 5 FF

Jamie Collins
6'3.5" 250 4.59/2.61/1.58 19 41.4" 11'07" 4.32 7.10
Senior stats: 66 tackles, 10 sacks, 20 TFL, 4 FF, 5 PBU

No, I'm not saying Collins is "the next DeMarcus Ware." I'm just saying that athletes like that seldom make it out of the first round, especially if they can rush AND cover. The winless, dysfunctional Southern Miss Golden Eagles made it possible, and I'll take the gift.

Agreed. I likened him to Ware in a previous post. He may never be as good but his athleticism definitely matches up with DeMarcus'. It wouldn't shock me at all if he's the gem of the draft.

Initially, I think he will only be an edge rusher

0-12, so he was on the worst team in the FBS. I could see how that could affect your effort, even UMASS won a game....

I see BB moving hightower over to MLB in sub packages with Collins and mayo on the outside.

I can see it is no use...you take the numbers, show them , show that this lie about his "effort" is just that...and still, the parrots keep squawking...."no effort!!! lazy !!lazy!!!"...

Dec. 4, 2012

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior defensive lineman Jamie Collins (McCall Creek, Miss.) earned Conference USA first-team honors Tuesday in a vote taken by the league's 12 head coaches. Collins led the team in tackles in 2012 with 92 and also ranked first in C-USA in tackles for loss (20.0) and third in sacks (10.0), which both rank fifth on the school's single-season chart. His tackles for loss number currently ranked tied for No. 7 in the country, while his sack total was 21st nationally.

The Golden Eagle defensive end forced four fumbles during the campaign, which ranks tied for 3rd on the school's single-season chart and holds a 5th-place on the school's career chart with seven fumbles forced. It was the 3rd consecutive season a Golden Eagle has forced four fumbles.

He posted three double-digit tackle performances during the year including a season-high 13 against Nebraska and 10 versus Boise State.

It just isn't going to stop though. He's "LAZY!!!!".....He's
a "QUITTER!!!!"....leads the team in tackles by 20 over the next closest player on his team, leads the team in sacks with TEN, 3.5 MORE than his junior year, put up 8 more solo tackles than his junior year even though he was double teamed far more, and was named first team All conference in a consensus...but "he quit!!!!"..."he played better as a junior!!!!!!"...this crap is pure unadulterated bullshyt...but it is NOW part of the Pats fan "Pantheon of Player Putdowns"...I realize that what I just posted will be ripped apart as "not real!!!!" and spun and twisted and "but...but ....but"'ed until this rookie is not only a bust but Bill Belichick is a moron again and has no business picking players...how's it go??..."great coach....but HORRIBLE GM".... this friggin site is turning into the Twilight Zone with all the nutbag hating....
