VIDEO: Revis Talks about being a Patriot

Something to note, this is part 1 of a 2 part+ interview, Mike Reiss said there will be more of it to come, so keep your eyes peeled. It's a good listen, I like Revis more and more the more I hear.

Never had any issues with him as a player/person outside of his contract stuff before, but now he's become very likeable, as opposed to not caring one way or another.

good video.... i have always respected him....seems like a decent guy, even if he is a mercenary.....thoughtful, articulate

He comes across as an extremely likable guy that has a lot of respect for the Pat's organization in this interview. Can't wait to see part 2.

It's extremely exciting to hear of Revis' good vibes so far, and it leads me to hope that a longer term deal can be reached. That said, I still don't personally expect anything to be done prior to the offseason when the year has been played out. I just don't see either side being totally comfortable with agreeing on a price until then, but I'd be very happy to be wrong.

I'll like Revis a lot more if he signs a long-term extension with the Patriots sooner than later.

These are my concerns about a deal being reached prior to the end of the year:

--the fact that the Patriots may want to see him over a longer term period of a season before deciding

--the fact that Revis and his agent(s) are known to play hardball

--the spike in the current CB market, with the recent pacts of Haden, Sherman, and Peterson on the way. Does Revis want to be paid as the top CB should he have a tremendously great season? There is a chance, although my guess is that as long as the money was somewhat comparable, he'd probably be okay.

--the tendency for N.E. to "allow" their players to see what the market in free agency brings, although that probably doesn't come into play in this particular situation. It may however, if there's a difference of opinion on say, a 12.5m dollar AAV, and a 15m dollar AAV. Who knows?

--any desire that Revis may have in seeing what the other teams offer in free agency, just to wonder if someone may throw crazy money offers out there

-------

Of course, there are some unknowns, which would include health and any predictions on the kind of season he may have. Will it be a 10/10? A 9/10? An 8/10? Will he play all 16+ games?

I'm thinking that a deal could definitely get done, I just wonder what the odds are that it will be prior to the end of the year? Either way, as long as he never hits free agency, we'll all be good :)

Man, he sounds giddy...I know I sure am.

Hopefully he has enough money and winning is a higher priority.

I can't come up with a decent analogy, but it must be an eye opener to finally play for an organization that isn't a complete train wreck. No BS, organized, hard work and a winning atmosphere.

I once took a paycut to go back to a company that had a great atmosphere and attracted nice personnel. Let's hope Revis feels the same.

They haven't won a championship w/o Ty Law (a shut down corner). I hope they recapture that buzz. Was it 2003 when Brady said they weren't going to lose another game....and they didn't. They said you could just feel the buzz in the locker room.

The only issue I ever had with Revis was that he wore that crap green uniform. He was always a beast, and I don't expect anything less here.

I just hope we get Revis in his, dare I say, "New York Jets" form. He was the best defensive player in football consistently at that time. If that's the guy NE gets this season, it's hard to not like them as a favorite to be there at the end. That's the kind of player Revis has been for most of his career. You all saw what Talib did for the D, and now you add someone who is potentially better by leaps and bounds. C'mon! Bring on the season already!!!

Wasn't it being reported somewhere that the two sides were going to try to come to some sort of an agreement over a long term contract during the season? I might be mistaken (and I can't find anything definitive on Google) but I could have sworn that was reported when he first signed.

And this video is awesome. I hope he loves playing for this organization and helps the team bring the Lombardi back where it belongs... multiple times.

The Patriots play hardball on contracts but have a really solid history of getting deals done with their top players and i expect the same to hold true with Revis. If they can get both Revis and McCourty done they are going to have a great secondary for the next 3-4 years, and with the rest of the pieces they have in place are going to be right in the middle of the hunt for Lombardi's for the rest of Brady's career. you really can't ask for much more than that imo.

I think there was some specualtion that this could be true but I dont think it ever had any factual evidence behind it from agent or team and it never really made sense to me as the idea we would restructure even before the season is foolish why would you sign a contract knowing before any games get played you would restructure.

IMO the way the Patriots generally work and the way the contract is structured I don't see any negotiating until the season is over. IMO the contract was structured to be a one year deal in which a Tag can not be used after (as it really is a 2 year deal with a dummy year) and in which the Patriots have minor control over him (though $ amount makes this pointless) more so to restructure a new deal in which Revis assuming healthy will have all the leverage. And the real reason for the added year was to spread this years cap hit out. They basically came up with a one year prove it deal in which the Patriots have minor control over a future year and in which Revis has all the leverage when the year goes well but the Patriots can walk if it does not.

It was speculation centered around the rumors that Revis sabotaged any trade attempts out of Tampa because he had his eyes on playing in NE for a few years now. He obviously couldn't make the Jets trade him, so refuse to take a paycut so Tampa can't trade you and that's how you get your walking papers.

The contract we gave him is also very unusual for this team, the 2nd year exists strictly for cap management, franchise tag prevention, and to artificially inflate Revis' number to 16m/year, aka the highest paid CB in the league.

I believe that was done to show Revis that we want him here. We met a players demands and they compromised at the same time, he's making less real money yet has the appearance of 16m. Have we EVER done that?

The plan currently in place HAS to be to extend him, it's just a matter of will Revis be enamored enough by the team/winning atmosphere here to accept the deal. We'll pay him above CB top tier value, but will it be enough for Revis, I do believe his priority has shifted to winning over money at this point in his career, but he has a much longer history going against my belief than he does supporting it.

I think NE would even pay the $20M next season if he's in beast mode.

No, they wouldn't.

The salary itself is 20m, but the cap hit itself is 25m, IIRC.

Just noticed that this response was bordering on the line of a "know it all," so my apologies to pdangle. It wasn't intended that way.

A much more appropriate response would be to suggest that it's very unlikely due to the excessive cap hit. Then again, I hardly claim to have a crystal ball, so anything's always possible, especially as it pertains to Bill Belichick and doing what's best for the team.

I think the 2nd year was pretty much put in my Revis' camp to make sure that he could not be franchised, so they came up with a very high option to deter the Patriots front office in the hopes that he could see a longer term pact one way or the other.
