Maroney debate threads (MERGED)

Maroney is never going to look good in pre season games. Most of the running plays are off tackle plays and Maroney is not really an off tackle kind of guy. He can be when the linemen run stunts but he almost never does well without them.

I never really understood why Belichick wanted Maroney as he really is not a between the tackles kind of runner. He needs plays designed to his strenghts. He runs much better when he runs away from the strength of the line in front of him. I think he would be especially good if Belichick brought back the old pitch out to the RB play and Maroney could run around the tackles rather than between them.

We're not a running team and we're not going to be anytime soon. We're better off just signing veterans like Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris even if we have to sign new names every year. We can then utilize cap money in other areas on defense. If Maroney could bring us another 2nd round pick I would trade him and just add a veteran who gets cut from another team.

Are you nuts?

From here, last year:
New England Patriots Football Team Stats and League Rank - FOX Sports on MSN

Pats had 42 total touchdowns. 21 were rushing TD's. 4th ranked in NFL
Total offensive plays: 1095. 513 were rushing plays. 4th ranked in NFL
Total rushing yards: 2278. 6th in NFL

I'd say the Patriots were a rather GOOD rushing team, but why let the facts get in the way of perceptions?

Taylor rushed for 3.9 YPC last year while MJD rushed for 4.2. Fred Taylor is 33. I highly doubt Taylor will be the best RB on the roster. He looks like your typical post-30 RB who is just starting to fall apart.

Taylor and Drew both had career lows last year with the horrible jaguars front line.
The year prior Fred had his career high in his 10th year, 5.4ypc.

I still say Fred will be the starter, and be the 1st and 2nd down back.

Jaguars RG Maurice Williams (torn biceps) will miss at least

Starting to notice a pattern? Is it really that surprising that Jags RBs sucked across the board last year?

He sure did. But I'll take the guy who looks like crap and rushes for 4.3 YPC over the guy who looks "pretty darned good" and delivers 3.7 YPC. :)

I'm going to coin a new term: The Maroney Illusion. It's when runs appear shorter than they really are because the RB's running style makes it look like he isn't running hard and could have gotten more.

The Maroney illusion isnt that when someone averages 4.3 ypc but never gets a first down or kills the clock? I would say illusion is right. I would point to the funhouse mirror illusion which is when his stats seem nice and tall and ripped but you know its just a short fat guy in front of the mirror. Also mirrors are made of glass....like kool-aid pitchers;)

Never gets a first down? Or Kills the clock? Say what? Just stop it would you. Maroney has gotten plenty of first downs. As for killing the clock, that's the coach's call. If you have an issue with it, yell at Belichick...

BTW.. My Kool-Aid pitcher is plastic..

And your forks have corks on them so you wont hurt yourself, thats great

By killing the clock I mean like Dillon used to do by moving the chains, If Maroney was getting first downs consistently and bleeding the clock when we had leads that would be great. That way drives would last longer, the leads would be safer, the other teams would have to waste time outs. I love a pass happy offense but if we had a rb who could consistently make 3rd and 2 late in the game with a slim lead, instead of having to throw and potentially have a dropped ball a stopped clock and an opponent with momentum. If you think Maroney gives us that I respectfully disagree.
