Re: Was the Primary goal last night to get Brady HIT??

Well, I'll tell ya'll what... I hope that hit settles Brady down now. Maybe it's just me, but there were a couple throws that just looked like he threw it scared.

I know there is a mental gap for Brady that needs to be closed, I hop that hit helps fill that gap, and he settles into his normal rythem next week / early into the season...

did anyone else who saw the game in person or on TV notice that? when i read the description of the game this morning and of the hit, it came to my mind, but I have no way of knowing. way too early to panic, even if it is true BTW...the guy is coming back from a major injury and this is why he wants to play this preseason...

Bizarre, wasn't it? It's as if he considered stopping the rusher coming unimpeded to the QB's blindside, but thought better of it. Then turned around afterwards to see what had become of Hoyer.

My guess is that he thought there was a RB behind him.

Well that's what I was thinking... I'd rather him shake the rust off, get some pressure, take a hit or two, and start building that mental bridge now rather than starting during the regular season.

I didn't mean to sound like I was panicking about Brady, just hope that since he's been planted now and popped right back up, that he'll begin to settle down. Guess we have to wait until next week now eh?

Yeah, it did look like that. For all we know somebody else might have blown an assignment and Smith was just a horrified eyewitness. Good old-fashioned preseason 3rd-string ugliness. :)

I read an article a few weeks back where TB's coaching guru in CA estimated it would take 6-8 weeks to get to full efficiency. Perhaps Manning from last year is the "blueprint".

I do wonder if two series was really enough for game 2. I wonder the reaction if last week's effort ended with the INT.
Does anyone know if game 3 actually has game planning?

The one person I believe who did whiff on an edge block last night was Alex Smith failing to see Tom Nelson race out of the slot and nail Hoyer in the back.

Maybe the slot receiver (Ventrone?) didn't give him a blitz call but he stayed right behind Vollmer the whole time like he was blocking for a field goal.

I can't believe how bad Alex Smith looks right now. He can't catch and he can't block. No wonder Tampa was more than happy to accept our 5th-rounder next year for him. Bill has shown a disturbing tendency to throw away valuable draft picks for declining, underproductive vets as if those picks were cheap beads at a Mardi Gras parade.

We don't...and probably never will. Just like with Cassell's piss-poor play last pre-season, BB uses the exhibition games as an evaluation tool as much as to prepare his starters. I'm convinced he puts players in particular situations that they would never see in real action. An example I clearly remember from last week was using a slide protection and having Smith try to block the DE 1-on-1. Obviously he struggled and Walter got sacked, but do you think for a second that our undersized pass catching TE is gonna be left to block an end by himself on a straight drop back for even 1 play this season?

To truly make an evaluation on that play, we would have to know the protection scheme being used. It didn't look like a whiff as much as a checking off. Could be a mental bust, could have been Hoyer's responsibility to throw hot on a DB blitz. We just don't know...

He totally whiffed on that play, but other than that, he looked fine. Not NEARLY as bad as O'Callahan looked.

And ROC didn't look nearly as bad as Britt looked, i.e: as somebody who will out of a job in 2 weeks.

5th round draft picks aren't so valuable when you have a stacked roster like ours. Yes, once in awhile you strike gold (Pryor seems to be the case this year), but I'd rather take the chance on a cheap vet than populate the back end of opponents' rosters.

Also, having a vet with an expiring contract is a very valuable commodity this offseason with the twisted CBA rules for a team like the Pats expected to go far.

From what I saw of the sack, it looked like he was initially providing some inside support to the guard. That said, he was beat quickly.

That's what it was. This guy makes these mental errors all the time, but BB loves him.

And how do you know it was his mental error that caused the sack?

damn 2nd rounder for Welker
damn 4th rounder for Moss

We could have gotten rookies for those picks!

I'm looking at all of these responses and thinking how stupid they sound. Bottom line, even if you don't know the "protection call", you still have to guard the damn DE from getting to the QB. Just because Kaczur was confused, doesn't mean he should Gathers run right by him and smack Brady. I used to defend Kaczur but he is starting to let too many DE's run right around him for an easy sack. In fact, if it weren't for Cassel's mobility, the game against the Jets wouldn't have gone into overtime. If you remember, Cassel avoided a sack from Kaczur's side. He should enjoy his time starting because it won't be for very long. When's he cut, he would fit right in with Pittsburgh's O-line.

Sigh.

Kaczur is not getting cut.

When you form your "Rich Kotite to replace Bill Belichick" fan club, I don't think you will get very many fans to join... OTOH, you might be more successful with "Captain to replace Belichick" fan club... eh ? Nope!

Isnt their a bunch of offensive lineman in the last years of their contracts. Maybe if you trade one of them it will light a fire under their ass to start doing their jobs.

Is it me or was he especially poor last night .. the Geathers hit on Brady he just ran straight by him

That one play was Nick's fault or a mistake by Tom?

I have respect for Nick.... to be able to come straight out of college and play the best defensive players on the planet every week.

People get hit -its football

Plus, after the snap he conferenced with both Brady and Koppen, indicating it was a scheme mistake.

Yates had a similar play in the 2nd half where he double-teamed an end on an up-the-middle blitz on Hoyer. Taylor took the linebacker, leaving the defensive back free.

Yeah but we're used to Yates doing that by now. Can't always blame the scheme. ;)

Ok. So manning didn't have training camp, and didn't play in any preseason games last year. 6-8 weeks means Brady is ready for opening day.

Because of the look on his face after the play. He didn't have the look of "well I tried hard and failed" it was more like "wtf was I supposed to do there???"
