Schefter: Pats to sign Kendall Simmons

Although im still in shock from the 'other' trade, I do like this one. Simmons, when healthy, is a huge upgrade over Hochstein.

And if Bill wanted to sign a vet guard (and a Kendall), then he should've signed local dude Pete Kendall.

There is no downside to this.

If things work out we get a good player.

If things don't work out, BB will be the first to cut him. :)

We have fine young prospects in Wendell and Connolly (and Ohrnberger). It is unlikely that Dante and Belichick consider of the players you mention as an upgrade. We need a veteran center/guard for game day. The player needs to step in to three positions at a moment's notice. As of now, we will have to suit up two players with little experience to do what Simmons can clearly do. He is the replacement for Hochstein.

I agree. I'd rather have seen Bill sign somebody younger with some upside like '08 5th-rounder Roy Scheuning, who was cut by St Louis; or younger with some experience like '05 draft alum (Mankins, Kaczur, Britt) Evan Mathis. Simmons is older, fatter, lazier and has now lost whatever explosiveness he once had.

Edit: Mathis is still w/ the bungles. Oops.

Also, Simmons played OT at Auburn in college, so he could help there if injuries mount in a given game before LeVoir gets back. I'm actually a big fan of his. He was very effective for Pittsburgh before his injury.

I just feel that whatever Simmons can do now, Pete Kendall can do better, incl. play Center. And I really, really hope that a 3-year, non-vet minimum contract is not true; otherwise, that contract would exceed Springs' in stupidity.

Yes, of course we might end up playing with 7, but starting with 7 or starting with 3 OT's is another matter.

If Simmons is healthy and we bring back Britt, we will have our insurance policies. We can then see if Wendell or Connolly make it to the Practice Squad as I expect they will. If they are good enough, they should be paid full roster salary as Yates was in the past.

For me, these two changes would be a significant improvement over the initial roster with little downside. Since we had 9 OL's on the initial roster, no other units are even affected.

And just BTW, I think that Britt is a better choice than O'Callaghan since he is a better LT.

I think they they might wait a week before re-signing Britt; then his entire salary wouldn't be guaranteed if Levoir were to come back and beat him out.
