Re: OT: Yahoo Sport's Charles Robinson says Jets' tampering would be worse than Spyga

I honestly didn't know that about the Jets.... I missed this year's rankings so congratulations and welcome to the club..!!

Been there for 3 years.

Of course, I don't think that will help if these allegations are demonstrated to be true.
Well, your post made it quite clear that you believe Goodell would give the Jets special treatment because he "wants them to succeed" and because they are near the top in terms of value.

Considering the Commissioner's job is to lead the league without favoritism or bias, then giving prefential treatment to certain teams based on net value is pretty much the definition of "corrupt".
I think in this case he will act as judge and jury. The 49ers will get a chance to make their case, his job will be to sit back and listen to the evidence.

First of all, I disagree because the Giants, who actually have won a Super Bowl recently, are not significantly higher.

Second of all, I don't really give a crap what team has what net value. I've never seen a stadium full of people explode with cheers when the scoreboard posted that team's net value. You think Redskins fans are saying "hey, we suck, but we kick ass in net value..!!"

I'm not really following your "fans cheering for value" statement. This has nothing to do with the fans. This is from a business standpoint. Goodell cares about these things, after all, it's a business FIRST.

Third of all, I especially don't care what a team's theoretical net value would be if they had actually won a Super Bowl sometime since the LBJ administration.

But hey, whatever keeps you warm at night...

I don't take ownership in something that has nothing to do with me. I'm a fan of the Jets. I don't contribute to wins and losses. When they do or don't win a Super Bowl isn't a personal failure or success. I don't rest my head on their accomplishments. If that's your cup of tea, so be it. But please, don't assume I need to live my life thru other people's accomplishments.

1. In Pictures: The Most Valuable NFL Teams Of 2009 - No. 5: New York Jets - Forbes.com

What's scary is that the Houston Texans are 6th in terms of franchise value. But they do have the biggest stadium naming rights deal so...

2. I don't think Goodell is corrupt. I also don't think he's an idiot. He's not going to turn over every stone to find an answer on this one. If there is indisputable evidence they tampered, he'll be the righteous hammer of Thor. I don't think it'll get to that point.

Think about this. The Pats are valued at $1.4B. The Jets, $1.2B. Now flip them. Let's pretend, cause I think that's all we (Jets fans) will ever be able to do, the Jets, not the Patriots, won 3 Super Bowls with in a 4 year period. I think you're looking at the first $2B team in the NFL.

Uh, no you wouldn't. The only reason that your value is so high is because of the New Giants Stadium that you are moving into. The Jets are just not a marquee franchise, sorry.

Actually, this is their 2nd year. In 2007, they were #10.

Absolutely correct. But Goodell has responsibility to behave in an ethical fashion when it comes to doling out punishments for infractions. It is indeed a business first, but Goodell is ethically and morally bound not to give any sort of preferential treatment to certain teams just because they have a higher value when it comes to on-field matters such as player-personnel tampering.

It is clear you think he is corrupt enough to ignore his ethical responsibilities and cut the Jets some slack because they are a top-5 team. I happen to disagree. If the 49ers can prove their allegations, your new stadium and operating revenue isn't going to save you.

Yeah. Sure. I can tell you don't give a crap about sports. That's why you're in this forum when you're not even the fan of the Patriots. To demonstrate how much you don't care about sports or how well your team performs.

We're all football fans here and we all obviously care about how our favorite teams perform on the field. No one cares about their net value except you - but I guess if you're a Jets fans under the age of 50, you really don't have anything else to go with.

Bingo! We have a winner.

Could it be...?

Rules: Please don't let facts get in the way of a good moral dilemma here. :) No arguing that tampering is not widespread or that only the Jets would have been caught tampering with a first round draft pick etc. According to the article, tampering is a serious issue with implications far worse than Spygate AND it is known to be a fairly common practice around the league.

With those things in mind, should the Jets be found guilty, would you advocate throwing the book at them or cutting them some slack?

I advocate throwing the book at the JESTS, and I further advocate the networks, starting with BSPN, doing a year-long drumbeat of stories about the shameful cheaters that are the Tamper Bay front office.

I would advocate Goodell fine the team and the coach the max, which was unprecedented in 07, to demonstrate precisely the premise you have put forward, that this is, indeed, as "bad" as the Pats' videotaping. I would also advocate they be docked their #1 pick in 2010.

Since the point in your post is that we are stipulating the article's point, it is the only way to demonstrate any semblance of impartiality on the League's part.

Furthermore, if you embrace the premise of the article, anything less not only inherently implicates Goodell for favoritism, but also establishes that his actions against the Patriots and sentiment supporting those actions were the purest hypocrisy, motivated not by justice but by envy -- a sort of "Break Up The Patriots" movement by other means.

Finally, I think we should at least discuss in a widespread, loud, and irrational way, whether all one of Tamper Bay's super bowl trophies should be taken back by the league. Ditto the rings which likely looked a lot like a high school class ring back in the day. Maybe that one divisional championship this decade too.

Re: OT: Yahoo Sport's Charles Robinson says Jets' tampering would be worse than Spyga

IMO, this is put up or shut up time for Goodell. If he comes up with a slap on the wrist like the late round draft pick he fined the 49ers for tampering or sweeps it under the rug which is more likely, he has proven to one and all that he is nothing but a stooge for his former employer. At that time I would hope that Kraft would realize that Goodell was really out to bring down the Pats to benfit the Jets and does everything in his power to get an unbiased commissioner an send the POS to Faye Vincentville. If by some miracle the Jets are punished identically to the Pats then I will be the first to applaude his integrity.
By the way what happened to the investigation of the leak of the confidential Pats tape to Fox TV which was in Goodell's custody. Can anyone tell me who was punished for the leak LOL.

Same thing that happened to the illegally obtained Miami tape of the Pats in 06. To quote Greg Aiello,

"That's football."

Re: OT: Yahoo Sport's Charles Robinson says Jets' tampering would be worse than Spyga

How is anybody going to ever prove it? It's not like there are ... tapes. :(

Put Deion on the stand in court. He won't stick his neck out for Parker.

Re: OT: Yahoo Sport's Charles Robinson says Jets' tampering would be worse than Spyga

It's my belief that Bob and Jonathan Kraft will not let this one go. They won't be public about it, but I'd be willing to put money on it that they and other owners will be pulling Goodell aside and letting him know that he'd better be just as open on this as he was on the memo violation by the Patriots..

Fox TV employee Mrs. Goodell was sent to her room without dinner for a week. Then Mike Tannenbaum took the Commish and the Mrs. out for a night on the town courtesy of the Jest.

Re: OT: Yahoo Sport's Charles Robinson says Jets' tampering would be worse than Spyga

The spokesman from the NFL office who said "That's football" was actually a guide named Steve "Not So Smart" Alic.

Re: OT: Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson says Jets' tampering would be worse than Spyga

Funny how it was a federal case when it was the Pats and its just football when its the Jets, Dolphins or the Colts. I just wonder how many other teams were implicated when Goodell decided to destroy the tapes. Somehow, I don't think it was done to reduce the punishment for the Pats.

Re: OT: Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson says Jets' tampering would be worse than Spyga

I don't want to necro a thread, but I didn't want to start a new thread to ask

Has anyone heard anything about this? I would think that if there wasn't any evidence of tampering the league would have immediately been dismissive of the accusation.

Good point, I've been wondering this as well.

why is it when we're accused of stealing signs, it turns into an all out investigation, hourly coverage and brutal punishments? This whole Jets saga was an afternoon SportsCenter segment and nothing else.

If we're so worried about "integrity" where the **** is the punishment or even a freaking investigation? Nothing was said concerning an investigation coming up clear. I don't think it's so much showing Roger hates the Pats. I just think he really is an egotistical **** head that gets caught up in the media, who they hate and who they want punished.

It just seems to me every time I see a player arrested and the media catches wind of it, Roger runs after the guy. But when ever an unpopular figure completely unknown steps into the picture, Roger does ****. Why is this? Does he hand out punishments for the people? Why must he wait on Raiders coach Cable's investigation to be complete, but he never does it to NFL players?

Consistency? PLEASE?!

Re: OT: Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson says Jets' tampering would be worse than Spyga

As I said previously, its time for Goodell to show his true colors which I suspect are Jets green. I will be the most surprised person in the world if Goodell has either the inclination or fortitude to investigate his former employers. Consider this investigation to be hidden under the rug alongside the investigation of who leaked the Pats tape to Fox TV.LOL

Re: OT:Yahoo Sport's Charles Robinson says Jet's tampering would be worse than Spygat

We should be busy coming up with a new name for this scandal..

Tampergate?

Well since it's the Jets, how about Tampongate.

If the shoe fits............

Re: OT: Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson says Jets' tampering would be worse than Spyga

I am not saying the Jets did not tamper with Crabtree, they have tampered in the past and I am sure they will in the future, it's common league wide.

What I don't get is what the Jets would gain by doing so. The only team Crab can sign with is the 9ers, if he was to re enter the draft there would be little likelihood that the he would fall to the Jets??

Just does not compute.
