Official 2012 Mock Draft FAIL thread

Remarkably, the 2011 Draft is less than a week old, and we already get this tasty gem from SI.com:

31. New England Patriots (via the Saints): Matt Reynolds, OT, BYU
If the Patriots stay here, they have a lot of building to do on the offensive line. But they could package both their picks to move up in the first round, or once again move out of the first round. Reynolds has struggled with a shoulder injury, but will be very productive when healthy.

Exactly. We've not got a German Mountain, a Soldier from Boulder and a Texas Cannon, and we still need help. We just cant win here.

Are they saying that Solder will be a bust?

Adding, not just an Olineman, but a Tackle?? And an injured one at that?? They wouldnt even give us a Center in that spot? What's really funny is how that's with pick 31, so theyve apparently got New Orleans losing in the Superbowl. Gotta love predictions.

Cannon may end up on the OL, but I suspect that BB is going to try him out on the DL.

He'll probably make Solder into our 5th TE.

I'm not suggesting he ever tried that. I just look at the size and athletisism of the guy, and he looks like he could play either NT or DE in the Pats system. That doesn't mean that he can play those, he's just a good physical match for that. I also suspect that BB will try him there in camp, and if it doesn't work out, will stick to OL.

Trust me. He's never even gonna get a sniff on the Dline. Not a sniff.

Are you just saying that because BB never tried it, or is there some aspect of Cannon's game that makes you think he couldn't play DL? Check out this presser where BB is asked about where Cannon will play:

Q: Do you prefer him at guard or tackle, or just kind of play it by ear?

BB: With all these players, once we get them and get a chance to work with them, we'll look at their skill sets and put them in different positions. We move people around quite a bit anyway in our offense and defensive systems, so we'll see how it all works out. I'm not sure exactly what's best for anybody. I assume we'll play [Ryan] Mallett at quarterback, but the rest of them, we'll see how it goes.




Im just saying its kind of a dumb idea. Its not something this team, BB in specific, would do.

It will never happen. We have need at guard coming up very soon and he will be groomed for that position.

Is converting a wrestler to OL a dumb idea? How about converting a small QB to slot receiveer or an OLB to a TE red zone threat? It's called thinking outside the box, which BB does more than any other head coach in the NFL.

QB to WR is fairly common, and many teams have done it successfully. And Neal was never a Dlineman from the beginning, and was a totally unique situation and a project. Cannon is NOT a project. The man was an All-Conference, All Americal OFFENSIVE lineman. You do not switch the man to the other side of the ball just because. I like that he's athletic. Hopefully, that helps with his effectiveness on the side of the ball where he's actually been trained to perform.

Brewster would be the obvious next step in rebuilding the Offensive line. But I would remind one and all that Ted Larsen a rookie was taken from our PS squad and became a starting Center as a rookie in Tampa Bay, and performed well.

He lost out to Dan Koppen and developing Center candidates, youngsters Ryan Wendell and Rich Ohrnberger. I believe Dan Connelly has also worked at Center, as well. How bad can all these guys be to beat out Ted Larsen? Do we really need to draft a Center?

I just think Scars coaching is on a different level than it was 10 years ago. He's the best in the business nowadays and his formula for teaching is evident in his players. Light, Mankins and Vollmer were 1st and 2nd rounders and I'm just starting to see a trend in being able to coach someone who is almost NFL ready as opposed to someone who is a few years away. I'm thinking Solder and Brewster transition into NFL ready a lot sooner as opposed to some 6th rounder.

I highly doubt the Patriots resign Koppen to a long term deal,possibly a short friendly contract. They may have got lucky with Dan progressing faster than expected out of the 5th round. I highly doubt we groom one of the practice squad players in such a short time or strike gold late in the 2012 draft.

I have Center as a very high priority next season and I want one that can hopefully step in right away.

A couple of football fans who apparently were riveted to their seats during the 2011 draft:

30. NE: Devin Taylor, DE/OLB, South Carolina
The Patriots added Robert Quinn but Taylor can play on the opposite side. Considering he's still growing into his 6'7 frame, the sky is the limit.
32. NE: Dont'a Hightower, LB, Alabama*
Hightower is a big linebacker that excels in coverage and laying down big tackles. He'll need an improved 2011 after a slow recovery from injury last season.
