OT: Hurricane Irene and Impact on Northeast

Thanks.

We do have tall trees around our house. We are about 50-60 miles inland from the Bay, but they are right now evacuating all of Ocean city, MD.

I wonder what the odds are that VA/MD get earthquake aftershocks during the Cat 2 hurricane. :D
I'm in Vienna, VA. We are probably in the orange zone for more moderate danger but I'm not really sure I'm reading the threat level map on weather.com correctly. It's hard to say exactly because the map isn't precise. I'm worried because my 104 year old Victorian is surrounded by trees/foliage. And we already have a roof leak that has done cosiderable ceiling damage to one of our bathrooms. We're having a partial re- roof done ( can't afford a new one all at once, have to do bits and pieces) but obviously not until after this storm and I shudder to think of what the ceiling will look like. We're cutting a hole in the ceiling and sticking a bucket under it, I think. Anyway, good news is we're on a hill, so hopefully no flooding.

Do remember that trees in NE are not used to these potentially stronger winds. They are fine up to about 60-70. 80 and above you will get alot of pines going down.

AND the ground is wet from about 9 inches of rain (in my area) so far this month. I'm SO glad my neighbors cut down the pine that towered over my house a few years ago (after a smaller pine toppled in the wind and rain and took out power for two days).

Guess we need a new strength and conditioning coach:)

Old?......yea,I remember "Carol" in 1954.I was 4 yrs old and a giant tree fell on our 3rd floor balcony......FYI....They retired the name "carol" after this storm.....Now THAT'S,a hurricane!:rocker:

You mean there's a hurricane Hall of Fame? Only in America! :americaflag:

I got tickets to hear the BSO play the Ninth at Tanglewood Sunday afternoon.....That ain't gonna happen now i'm sure.

Our company has a sound and lighting system on Governor's Island, NY for a concert featuring DMB. The shows are supposed to be Fri, Sat & Sun. They haven't called it off yet.

We've got a Hall of Fame for everything....including serial killers....Is this a great country or wot?:rocker:

Just some rain and wind..no biggie...the ice storm a few years ago i bet will still be way worse..no power at my house for 11 days after that

Well the Georgian weathermen must not be following the rest of the country as they just said on local news that it may go up the Savannah River and towards Tennessee....

Only in the South

No kidding. :rocker:

'course, you ain't got no Queen to give 'em a knighthood ...

(I can't believe the weather here. It's two or three days from the hurricane and it already feels like In the Heat of the Night. I need a seersucker suit and a mint julep.)

Yes, Mike we do. And here is the big one.

Little known fact: during the War of 1812 when the British Army sacked the new city of Washington,DC, they were hit by a hurricane and were so devastated that they could not push on with the attack.*

This could have saved us from having Royal weddings.

*It was on the History Channel so it must be true

Instead we get Kardashians. How is this an improvement?

I do have a retort for that. But this is a family friendly site and I am a moderator.

I'm picturing you as Charles Laughton in "Advise and Consent"......not a pretty picture:eek:

Remembering Hurricane Donna, 1960, makes you old, hell I was around for Hurricane Carol 1954, heck, I even remember when Hurricane Carter was jailed and released :)

haha............

Maybe that's the name for our interior line, Hurricane and Earthquake.

But it didn't!
My wife is obsessed with Kate!

Italia was only 11 when I graduated from HS....just a youngster :p

That being said, anyone who is over 60 deserves respect here for making it that far in life :D

Not sure what the projected path is for the storm after it passes Jacksonville, but I'll wish you guys luck either way. The storm is beginning to get into my area and, so far, it's pretty soft. But we're getting northern bands right now, so all of that could change as we get closer to the eye.

Separated at birth.

We went through four hurricanes in 2004 when we moved to Central Florida.

What did I learn?

Tarps, a chain saw and a full tank of gas are all a good idea before one hits.

No power = no gas.
