I'm hearing rumors on Indy message boards- Peyton to IR

I am really glad you clarified that. For just a brief second there, I thought Manning was having butt surgery as well.

No, but Indy fans may be doing some on Polian soon...

I guess it is somewhat controversial and not favored by the mainstream. So naturally Indy fans are looking to do a lower posterior approach to the Chicago based surgeon...

But again, even his critics say if there was a bone spur involved that is the only way to get at it. Just now if it hasn't worked the only option is to go in from the front and fuse the disc and possibly do a tiny bone graft to insure that space is maintianed for the nerves to travel. Waiting seems to be the medical equivalent of punting on 3rd down at the moment, just hoping his nerves are the exception to the rule and will still improve in a little more time after already waiting twice the normal timeline - as opposed to the conventional wisdom that the longer you wait the worse it could actually get. That too has Indy fans freaked with some wanting him to have the additional procedure done yesterday...

Lots of anger and angst over on Coltfreaks... Mostly directed at Polian for building a team that can't remotely function absent Peyton... Eventually your chicken all come home to roost. This is worse than the cap hell Polian always managed to evade...

Mo

Quite brilliant

Did you stay at a Holiday Inn last night?

As mush as Peyton is kinda sooky at times, it is fun to watch him play.

Hope he gets better and is back on the field soon...

My husband's fusion procedure was definitely through the front.

How is he doing now? How long ago? Scar noticeable? Just asking because I have a pinched nerve in my neck that bothers me once in awhile, not excruciating or anything. I manage quite fine. Keep wondering if someday I will get to the surgery point if it does get worse.

Hard for me to believe that Manning would agree to being put on IR and I am sure he get's a heavily weighted vote. Wait and see.

Amazing he got away with it this long. Belichik has been using a very different approach from the start of his tenure here, developing an offensive system that Brady runs but can also be run by his back-ups. They will never run it at the same level but the team is still competitive as a whole and effective offensively even in his absence. Polian should have known better but the results were so good he was able to skate by relying primarily upon manning. Sucks he is in this situation because he's a great player and the competition with Brady has helped define both of them.

I hope it's not true. Whether you like or dislike the Colts, Manning is one of the all time greats and he belongs on the field.

He's doing great. THing is, he never had any actual symptoms of anything. But the doctor warned us that if we did nothing then one day he could get badly injured just playing around with our son. So we did the surgery and it was about a week, week and a half of recovery and then he was fine. The scar is noticeable but will eventually fade completely. They did a fine job with it.

I just keep comparing this with Peyton's situation. I can't imagine having that type of injury with a professional football career.

This is an interesting article by Will Carroll the SI injury expert. He seemingly debunks much of the speculation and criticism the surgeon is getting. Says a fusion procedure is not feasible since it would end Manning's career...

Underlying all of this is a need to understand the microdiscectomy itself. Until the last decade, surgeons had one choice, called the "ACDF" procedure where the spinal disc was removed and the two vertebrae were fused together. For obvious reasons, an NFL player's career would be all but over after spinal fusion, and for a QB, it's just not reasonable. The microdiscectomy doesn't remove the disc, but basically creates a tunnel for the nerve to come out without being impinged by removing portions of the disc, and, if necessary, the surrounding joint. The danger is that there's further swelling or that scar tissue closes up the tunnel. It's easy enough to find YouTube videos if you'd like to see the procedure.

After surgery, the major issue is allowing the nerve to regenerate, which happens at a rate of about one millimeter a day. It's different in every person, but normally, regeneration happens quickly at first, but then flattens out. This is precisely what's being described about Manning, though it's happening at a much later date. No procedure will speed this. Speculation that there's scar tissue near the nerve hasn't been borne out, though some of the advanced diagnostic techniques Manning underwent on Monday may help determine this.

Dr. Neel Anand, the director of spinal surgery at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, told me that recovery for this kind of situation can take up to a year.

I rather see Peyton play out the next four years of his contract than risk it all for this year. It's really not worth it. I would feel the same if it was Brady

I still think the colts will beat the texans regardless. They always find a way to choke vs the colts.

I hate hearing about injuries to players. Regardless of who they are. I may hate Manning because of how Polian has forced the league to cow tow to Manning, but I could never wish injury on him.

Get well, Peyton.. Just call it a career first.. *GRIN*

Damn this may be true, have to go change my season predictions if this is confirmed lol.

Florio's running with the story, based upon an report by a guy at WNDE radio in Indy, with inside sources.

One rumor is that he has already had another surgery

Coincides with a rumor that he was having surgery Tuesday.

I don't understand all the Colt's front office secrecy then. If he's out, he's out. What's the point?

If it's true that Manning had another surgery, then the secrecy is because want to keep the fantasy that Manning will be back some time this season. He probably thinks that teams will waste time preparing for Manning when they really only have to prepare for Collins..
