Bill O'Brien Getting Thrown Under A Bus

these penn state menuites... have no clue... they still hope jo pa comes back.... its not bob fault that they want him.... no one wanted this job...

i feel the psu program is so tarnished though bob will not see 4 years there.... urban myer wanted this job until he found what a mess it was and ran straight for ohio... there in huge trouble... worse all they just realized tom brady has no eligibility left...

they're choosing a coaching hire to whine about? with all the crap they've been guilty of lately.......

that's funny

I understand players went to the AD to vent their feelings
It's going to be tough. First of all you have a consistent Wisconsin program and rising Michigan as well as a consistent Michgan St squad. Finally you have the gorilla called Urban Meyers and though Ohio St. too is in a heap of trouble you know the Meyers will be expecting 11-1... 12-0 years. BOB has a very uphill rd to travel.

The Penn State reaction seems to suggest they care more about picking one of the THEIR people, over choosing the best possible candidate. That's one of the reasons the program needs to be fixed.

I really hope O'Brien succeeds there. It won't be a cushy college HC job like most are, he has a nasty challenge in front of him. I think he made a mistake taking the job though. If he stayed with Belichick for a few more years he had a shot at taking over once Belichick called it quits.

So you've never dealt with any college alumni association, then?

What they really deserved was Matt Millen, now there's a Penn State guy...........

Wait till you see what the PSU "alumns" start saying about O'Brien when Joe Pa finally croaks and O'Brien drops off a couple of mediocre seasons.

The talking heads think Penn State needs a big name.

They don't.

They need a high caliber individual with integrity and coaching know how - a coach who recruits players who think there's a good chance they may gain the interest down the line of certain NFL teams, like, oh, I don't know, the New England Patriots.

That's what Penn State needs more than anything else - to rebuild and recruit.

That alone speaks highly of Bill of O'Brien, no matter what you think of his playcalling this year.

On a side note, I still think Mangini would have been a better choice.

Penn State got into this because coaches refused to blow the whistle on each other.

Who better than Mangini to show that the head coach has no problems doing that?

I did not say that. Have you? Plenty of colleges hire from outside, and especially in the context of everything that's happened recently at Penn State, to still have such an uproar even now over BOB is indicative of why bringing in someone from outside was the move that had to happen.

Who know's how this will turn out, but I think the hire is a good move for PSU. PSU has removed themselves from the tenacles of the Sandusky scandal. Whether or not it works out for O'brien, who is to say. BOB is enheriting a good defense, so for the short term if he can put up points he should fair well. Best of luck to him.

PSU is far from being out from under the Sandusky scandal, and O'brien is going to find himself dealing with it for the next few years at a minimum when he is trying to recruit in the wake of both this season and the coming trial. What parent in their right mind would want their kid going into that environment in the next year or two. When that trial is going on State College is going to be a media circus and the players and coaches are going to get asked about it constantly.

Regardless of his record if o'Brien can actually get that program past this scandal then he will have more than done his job.

That said i still have to root for them to lose every game forever, they deserve that much.

It would be worth it just to see Millen deliver a recruiting class made up entirely of wide receivers.

Two twits made those comments, not ALL the former players.

In fact, Shane Conlan said this:
As for comments from former players LaVar Arrington and Brandon Short not supporting the hire, Conlan said, "Brandon Short does not speak for the majority of former players. He's gone off the deep end."

Yes, I have, and outsiders are frequently frowned upon unless they are 'big' names. Thus, while a guy like a Nick Saban could be welcomed at _____ college, a guy like BOB won't get that same treatment.

This is pretty much S.O.P. at a lot of colleges/universities.

Greetings,
You are correct with this one. I live in Alabama and remember how excited Bama fans where when they hired Nick Saban, and he is an outside guy. This happens all of the time at colleges with historic football programs.

Greetings,
Fans, alumni, and students of big time historic programs have even bigger sense of entitlement than most pro-fans, I kid you not. They want "big names" because many have unrealistic expectations, no matter how bad the team is. When Bill Curry coached at Bama and lost a game, a fan threw a brick threw the window of his house. This was a man that compiled a 26-10 record while at Bama. Believe me, you think some Patriots fans are bad, spend time with these college diehards.

It is funny that Nick Saban's name comes up just when Josh MacDaniels and Bill O'Brian are in the news. I have a suspicion based on nothing at all, no inside information whatever, that Nick Saban is the inside choice to replace Bill Belichick whenever he decides to hang it up.

He has had the equivalent of Bill's Cleveland Browns failing experience, at Miami, and learned from it. He has been a very successful chief executive, and Head Coach at fabled SEC powers LSU and Bama, producing continuing winning seasons, and also national titles at both. Those combined qualities would appeal to Bob Kraft.

He obviously is a good judge of talent. And he has proven he can resurrect a former power LSU and can extinguish the memory of a hallowed forbear, in the form of Bear Bryant at Alabama, something any follow on Coach would have to confront at the Patriots.;););)

unless there's something i'm not aware of this looks like an awful decision by bob. he should have told penn state and it's alum to f off a long time ago. who the hell would want to coach there. it's toxic. and now he's getting dragged thru the mud by the morons around that program that allowed the mindset so sandusky could exist. all i can say is " bob, get out, asap."
