Tick Tick Tick 72 hours until free agency

And the patriots have announced ZERO re-signings. This is most unusual.

Really hoping Carter and Connolly get resigned before the market opens.

Don't think A. Carter is healthy enough to sign with anyone right now. I'd like to re-up Connolly and Mark Anderson before they hit the open market.

Re: Tick Tick Tick 72 hours until free agency

Anderson will be tough to keep. He's turned a few heads this year.

We'll find out soon enough if a shot at a ring ...or money...is more important to him

I'm not so sure he showed anyone he is any different than it was already known he was. A sub package pass rusher who struggles doing much else and can get you some sacks.
That is what garnered him a one year deal for 1mill plus a 375k signing bonius from us after his team cut him in October the year before and the team that picked him up didn't try to bring him back.
I don't think the number in his sack column has changed many opinions of him.
I don't think anyone doubted he could be a pass rush specialist.

He did really well in the Pats defense, playing a hybrid role. Other teams may not see this as translating so well into other schemes. Maybe this will work in our favor?

If any team is going to give him more than 3 million annually, play him like a starter, and expect the same sack totals he had his rookie year and this past year, they are making the same mistake that Chicago did (minus the hefty salary of course).

That being said, I'm of the belief that Anderson would like to stay here knowing that he had his most productive season (sack wise) with us. That and I'm sure he's taken notes after seeing a similar situation unfold with a similar player in Tully Banta Cain.

I disagree entirely.

I think that Anderson played the run a lot better than most anyone thought he could, and having a double-digit sack total never hurts in any capacity.

You're acting like he was already known for his ability to gain a double digit sack total....except that has not happened in SIX seasons.

The other sack totals were:

5

1

3 1/2

4

4

Saying that M.Anderson didn't surprise some people by going back to double digit sack totals since his rookie year in 2006 AND showed that he can do a lot better against the run is very short-sighted.

Yeah, not real sure what you saw out there that was good run D. When he was out there, which was mostly only after Carter was hurt he was eaten alive by blockers most of the time.

I'm saying he proved that he can't play the run, and while he had more success his pass rush skills were known. As I said, the number in the sack column is nice but not something GMs are shocked by and thought was impossible.
It was a good season for Anderson, but it just didn't change his status much. He is still a pass rush only specialist, but happens to be coming off a nice year.

We regularly discussed how Anderson was playing the run better than anticipated throughout some of the playoff threads.

There were also many media members who said how surprised they were about his capacity to hold up against the run much better than we originally thought.

I wish that I could somehow post a link, but I wouldn't even know how to go about finding some of those older mailbags/articles from a couple of months ago.

I suppose it's something we'll have to disagree on.

Regardless, I don't think Anderson is going to be part of the plans here next yr, but if he were I wouldn't have any problem with it.

I think he takes a deal that's better than what the NEP would give him here. If so, I'm guessing he will go back to being mediocre at best.

EDIT: here's a quote that I got from an article in regards to his PFF rankings this yr:

"Anderson was a well-rounded defensive end for the Patriots this season, not just an asset as a pass rusher. He ranked 24th against the run and 14th as a pass rusher, according to Pro Football Focus. And his rating of 13th overall was only six spots behind Bears star Julius Peppers."

Re: Tick Tick Tick 72 hours until free agency

I am not suggesting that Anderson's biggest weakness is not still against the run.

What I am suggesting is that he improved on that weakness. Not only that, he put up double digit sack totals for the first time since his rookie year.

You seem to be suggesting that he is the same player that everyone thought he was. That is what I am disagreeing with.

By showing improvements against the run (although maybe not 'great' improvements, they were improvements nonetheless), and having another double-digit sack total for the first time since 2006, he should certainly get more attn than he would have in the past several yrs.

The question will be whether he and the front office can agree on his worth, as I am guessing that they will not unfortunately.

Yes, I certainly expected at least a couple/few re-signings of our own by now.

It does seem quite strange that the number is zero.

So the fact that you had an opinion 2 months ago is proof of something?
Anderson didn't play the run well at any time this year, but whenever he made a play people wanted to look at that one play and ignore the 12 he was destroyed on.

There were also many media members who said how surprised they were about his capacity to hold up against the run much better than we originally thought.
I think your memory is faulty, but if not I'm sure you could link a few. Not that a media persons opinion will change what I saw with my eyes.

Doesn't really matter. I dont think any Patriot writers are any more capable of assessing what they see than you or I.

I suppose it's something we'll have to disagree on.
Unless you want to actually go back and watch the film. I have and it supported my opinion.

Regardless, I don't think Anderson is going to be part of the plans here next yr, but if he were I wouldn't have any problem with it.
I hope he is, but if so it will be exclusively as a sub package rusher or emergency player, just as it was this year.

I think he takes a deal that's better than what the NEP would give him here. If so, I'm guessing he will go back to being mediocre at best.
Frankly, you are much more impressed by his 10 sacks than I. I didn't see much more than mediocre plus a few sacks late in blowouts to pump up his stats.

EDIT: here's a quote that I got from an article in regards to his PFF rankings this yr:

We aren't really going to pretend Pro Football Focus is anything but the most horrendous source of football analysis that exists are we?
You know that Anderson had 20 tackles and 12 assists all year right?

Thats exactly what I'm saying with the exception of he had a good year of sack stats.

By showing improvements against the run (although maybe not 'great' improvements, they were improvements nonetheless), and having another double-digit sack total for the first time since 2006, he should certainly get more attn than he would have in the past several yrs.
You keep saying he improved against the run like it will become true if you say it enough.
I think every GM in the NFL felt he was capable of amassing 10 sacks. I think they will also look at the film and notice that quite a few of them were late in blowouts, quite a few were coverage sacks and some were QBs flushed out by another rusher into Anderson. They won't read a stat sheet and say "Wow we were wrong he must be great". Now the fact that he actually went out and put up a sack number that it was felt he was capable of but wasn't achieving will no doubt give him more bargaining power and he may get a middling offer, but to suggest we won't be able to compete with the lucrative offers he will get is way off the mark IMO. Perhaps I am wrong, we will know soon enough.

The question will be whether he and the front office can agree on his worth, as I am guessing that they will not unfortunately.
I think the Patriots will see his value about the same as the rest of the league. If Anderson thinks the statsheet makes the payday, he will probably do a lot of shopping and end up disappointed.

Re: Tick Tick Tick 72 hours until free agency

I guess this is the preemptive dumping on former/soon-to-be former Patriots of which we are all accustomed

Nope. It is me giving my opinion about Anderson which is the same as it was during the season, and is the same it will be whether we resign him, which I hope we do, or he goes elsewhere.

Uh huh. Which is why you're qualifying his sacks as if the same doesn't apply to almost every single rusher in the league.

It may or may not. I am describing his.
That still has nothing to do with you implying my opinion is different based upon whether he will be here next year or not when it is the exact same opinion I gave all season long.
Nice try though, but if you look at the square peg you will be able to tell it won't fit in the round hole.
