The Patriots sign OG Robert Gallery

I remember back to this draft and BB saying that he thought that Gallery was the best player in the draft. He was not good as a tackle, but very good as a guard. massive size, and playing for a winner (which he has never done) could start up his engine even more. So much for sitting FA out. Once again BB, is getting his house in order and will enter the draft without any major "holes" to fill (outside of the complete lack of a pass rush, which he seems determined not to fill).

Can't see any downside to signing Gallery/Stallworth too.

Do you think we can get anything for Ocho?????

A signed replica of his Dancing With The Stars video set?

Hey guys. Since the Seahawks are my NFC team, I thought I'd provide some insight on Gallery:

Since last offseason was shortened due to the lockout, Gallery was signed as a veteran bridge player at OG (specifically LG). Pete Carroll desperately wanted to improve the run game following the 2010 season, so he hired Tom Cable to coach the O-line. Since Gallery played for Cable when he was the Raiders HC, there was an obvious connection. Gallery right now is in his early to mid 30s and has been limited by various injuries over the years (including this past year in Seattle). When it comes to pass pro vs. run blocking, he is a much better run blocker (which may not be ideal given who we have under center). Based on what I've seen, he's a well spoken guy and a good team player (which was exhibited in how he played hurt most of last year).

The Seahawks cut him mostly because he was deemed too expensive at roughly $3 mil and because they liked what they saw from Paul McQuistan, who was a versatile O-lineman that played pretty much everywhere at one point or another due to a vast number of injuries on the O-line (and did so quite well I might add). Basically, they found their version of Dan Connolly and decide to go with him over Gallery.

Having said that, I love this move. If Waters comes back (and based on what I've been reading lately, he will), then Gallery will make for an EXCELLENT backup OG. I could see him placed into the game on short distance running downs at RG or next to Vollmer/Solder on the right side. All in all, he's a good pickup. Health is pretty much the only concern here.

And for those of you wondering if he can play OT, I wouldn't count on it. Even though he entered the league as an OT, he simply didn't possess the footwork/leverage to play outside, which lead to his move inside. Maybe Dante can coach him to play outside again, I don't know. But just don't get your hopes up that he'll spell one of the backup OT spots.

Waters insurance at guard, depth at guard and tackle?

With Mario Williams in the division now, perhaps Bill just wants to sure up all o-line spots as much as possible. This includes adding a blocking TE in Fells as well.

Just checking out some pix of him, he is huge.. reminds me of an overgrown, evillooking mennonite.

FWIW, my friend, who is a big Chiefs fan, told me that Waters has threatened to retire each of the last few seasons. So this is nothing new from him.

Waters has played Center, was better at Guard but maybe they move him. Maybe they have Gallery as the sixth lineman or competition for Waters.
Either way, great depth on the line.

As it stands now:
T Light
T Vollmer
T Solder
T/G Cannon
G Mankins
G Waters (maybe C)
G Gallery (has played tackle)
C Connolly
C Wendell
C McDonald

Low risk high reward.

Hopefully this doesn't mean that Waters is done. Assuming that Waters comes back, Gallery as a depth guard/emergency tackle sounds great to me. I do have to wonder who will be the backup center, though. Assuming that only one of Koppen/Connolly re-signs, I had assumed that Wendell would be penciled in as C/G depth, but Gallery would push him to fifth on the guard depth chart. Assuming that neither Cannon nor Gallery can play center, does this mean that we'll have to carry a dedicated backup C?

Always makes things simpler if one of the guards in the rotation can handle spot duty at center.

I assumed BB would bring Gallery in as long as he was willing to take the vet minimum or slightly more.

Outside of injury Gallery's a reliable guard in a man/man scheme; a beast on isolation runs.

We need depth. It makes sense.

I can't imagine it's for too much money. He does have some ability, but durability is an issue. Last 3 seasons, games played: 6, 12, 12. But he's a nice veteran presence that could step in if Waters doesn't stay.

They're doing so much to shore up the offense it makes you think that the draft is going to be defense, defense, and more defense.

.....and watch them draft an OL, WR. I expect 2 picks - 1 on Rd 1, 1 in Rd 2 and other 1&2 traded to future years. Patriots Groundhog day(aka Draft days).

Peter King: In 2004, he was picked 2d overall, ahead of Rivers, LFitzgerald, BigBen, Sean Taylor, Wilfork, Steven Jackson.

He can thank the departed AL DAVIS for giving him his millions. Gallery was supposed to be the can't miss OT. Somehow reminds me of Tony Mandarich

I can see rotating veteran guards Mankins, Waters, Gallery, with each getting a series off now and then. All can be beasts, but may benefit from some management of minutes. Generally O-lines are tough to have set rotations, due to chemistry and communication being so important in the blocking schemes, but maybe they can pull it off with their veteran knowledge. 3 guys playing 2/3 of the snaps each all year long theoretically gives you better production in January due to more left in the tank.

That's one hell of an OL on paper in terms of talent, depth and experience. Would not shock me if they again go OL in first 4 picks, especially with Light and Water year by year, Vollmer recent health issues.

Oh dear god. This guy was on the Seahawks last year, and he was pretty much a non factor on the O line. He was injured a ton last year. I personally don't like this move.

About his afternoon snack and the super bowl.

Mmmmmm... close. He's probably thinking about smoking a bowl and then having a really super sized snack.
