Wes Welker signs with Denver Broncos

The next few days will be pretty telling as to the direction the team is planning to take the offense. If they sign a deep ball flanker we're looking at a ball control, high percentage red zone offense, plain and simple. If they get another slot guy I will frankly be scratching my head.

Six million bucks a year towards the defense can buy one hell of a player in the back end. It could also buy a damn good safety and a good situational defensive tackle. That's really what the focus of this conversation should be. I am and was a big a Welker fan as anyone, but it's not like they just let Brady walk and when slot guys hit the wall they hit it exceptionally hard.

You forgot the most important part of the statement. But that is typical of people like yourself. You cherry-pick to make yourself look intelligent instead of using the entire SENTENCE.

I said

See the part in bold. That is the part you IGNORED and it makes all the difference in the world. Had you actually LOOKED to see who his QBs were in Miami in 2006 instead of making your stupid comment, you'd have seen they were Harrington, Culpepper and Lemon. NONE of whom could be remotely considered in Brady's league. So, yeah. Those were damn good numbers.

Someone didn't take his meds today.

After allowing this to sink in for a moment; I don't think this is a death sentence for the offense. With a healthy Gronk, Hernandez, and if we re-sign edelperson the team has enough talent to exploit the middle of the field. While Wes was undeniably the best at this, the team has the pieces to still be successful with these plays.

Should this "savings" be used to address the long ignored issue of a legitimate outside threat then everything should be great.

That said, I'm still incredibly butt flustered that BB let Wes Go over 2 million.

In the same post the guy is

1) claiming that the dynasty ended in 2007
2) freaking out because the Patriots didn't re-sign a guy who signed in 2007

Apparently the ride's over because we let a guy walk who was never even part of the dynasty in the first place. It makes no sense, top to bottom, and given the tone of the original post, no tone is too harsh as a response. I responded harshly, and it was warranted, and I don't regret it at all.

To everyone who is currently standing on a bridge at the news of Welker's leaving: just go ahead and jump already. The Pats will be fine, but if you types feel like clearing out in the mean time, you won't get any objection from me.

I don't know what's happened to you, but I'm sad to see you post this nonsense. You're usually a thoughtful poster, one of the very best here. This is something I expect of the clueless homers here, not from you.

to summarize

we offered 2yr/10mil + incentives

broncos offered 2yr/12mil

incentives in the NFL mean at least 1mil

so in essence we lost Wes b/c we were not willing to give him 1mil more over two years (more or less)

that is not a Plan in any way, that is only one thing, a MISTAKE

any way you dice it, the FO screwed this one up, and did so badly

any other FA WR who has the ability to match Welker's numbers (if any) will cost AT LEAST 10/yr

50% of the ppl on this board would have done a better job w/ Wes today if they were in charge of the FO
Agreed. But also possible he didnt want to be here because he didnt feel appreciated by the FO/management and didnt want to stay here even if they offered the same deal.

It is so sweet to see all the people who screamed at me when I said Bill cheaps out on talent and that HES THE BEST AT BUILDING TEAMS now are jumping off a cliff because he's doing what he has always done, make tough choices. Even I can see that they'll be fine. Seems like people have a serious Welker Syndrome that causes them to be hypocritical only when it comes to their binky WW

I've been on board with Patriots moving on from Welker. But it didn't have to be this messy. Just say goodbye, thank you and good luck.

i believe we know this to not be the case b/c Wes came back to us to match it, and honestly, if he got pissed cuz we didnt jump from 2/10 to 2/12, i cant blame him

he should be pissed if that was holding us up, but he was still willing to stay up to that point

THE SKY IS FALLING BILL IS CLUELESS SLOT RECEIVER OR BUST 2013.

They'll change the offense
They'll score 400-500 points
They'll have a better defense

It sucks they didn't match but I HATE how people act like this offense can't survive without Welker. What a disservice to Tom Brady to think they can't win because a slot receiver left.

One thing you forgot is that Brady GAVE Patriots more cap space. Speculated that he wants Welker signed.

Now the Patriots screwed Brady.

Haven't won since 2004....

Chance to add to the SB chain blown

Have you freakin' seen this move?

Not even close. For the first two, you're haggling over the definition of a "dynasty" when the team hasn't won a SB in almost 10 years.

For the third, the Patriots allowing Welker to get away is an embarrassment. If anything was worthy of reproach, and it was, it's the responses of you and BradyFTW!. They were beneath both of you.

Alright. I don't know what to tell you. I'm trying to keep an even keel, and RunDMC's post is the type of post which (IMO) you would typically be the first to admonish. The flaws in DMC's logic (and your response above) are pretty apparent. And I think removed from this context you'd be the first to realize them (e.g. "chance to add to the Super Bowl chain blown"). I really don't want to get acrimonious about this, because I enjoy our interactions here, so we should probably just drop it and chime in with the caterwauling.

To reiterate: I'm not happy that Welker's gone. For the money that Denver gave him, I think that the Pats should have kept him. I'm going to reserve judgment until I see the end result of the whole offseason, but for the moment, at least, it doesn't look good.

That said, anyone who calls Belichick an a-hole who deserves to be fired for this .... that's pretty much the definition of a clueless bandwagoner who absolutely should be told off pretty forcefully. The Pats have successfully moved on from enough veterans to have earned something vaguely resembling the benefit of the doubt. Belichick has a plan, and, as fans who are generally pretty lucky to have him, we can at least wait and see if he can successfully execute it.

Someone didn't take his meds today.

This coming from the person who has to cherry pick parts of sentences in some lame attempt to claim a statement is wrong.. If anyone didn't take their meds, it's you.

This only makes sense if we've decided to not use a slot receiver and instead go with two wideouts.
Otherwise, the saving 3-5m in savings to feature a less productive slot guy (edelperson or whoever) doesn't make sense

So we were willing to pay him almost 10 million just for last season, but won't even go over that for 2 years for the same productive guy, and especially considering the state of the receivers currently...? This makes no sense to me.

If he were to have been snatched by like 3/24 million I could understand. But not matching that offer is just silly, especially considering our cap space and lack of receivers on the roster.

One thing you forgot is that Brady GAVE Patriots more cap space. Speculated that he wants Welker signed.

I'm sure they didn't give him any assurances because they never have and never will let Brady tell them who to sign. This isn't the Jets where people get to say I want my buddy to be on the team sign him!

There is no flaw in anything I posted. There is no set definition of "dynasty", so picking an argument over which year it died and using that as justification for the "well find another team" argument should have been beneath you.

When you and BradyFTW! start making posts that are worse than troll posts, it's time to call it a day, so I'm just going to put this thread on ignore and hope you two pull your heads out when posting elsewhere.

The Pats haven't screwed Brady... yet.. There is still several receivers out there that the Pats could sign and the offense would be different with the long game improving, though the reliance on Gronkowski/Hernandez would definitely increase. But then, the Pats did throw a bunch of money at those two recently as well.

Thanks Wes. You've firmly entrenched yourself as one of my all time favorite former Patriots players. Now that I've had a few minutes to read some pieces and take in the disappointment of this news, I'm interested to see what the team plan is for the Patriots.

Re: Schefter: Denver in serious talks with Wes

If this happens, I want to see what the deal is before I get outraged.

As a follow up to my own post: I don't get it. Even if you want to re-focus the offense away from so much over the middle, this deal wouldn't have prevented you from adding outside weapons AND upgrading the defense. I'm dumbfounded.
