- Top 51 Cap Hits-$113,756,698

(In addition to the top 51 cap hits, I have calculated $12,778,358 in dead money.)

You probably noticed the Clausen signing and Mallett missing from the signed player list, that is based on Mallett being traded to the Texans for the #33 pick (or Vikings for #40).

Draft Picks
- #29-Hasean Clinton-Dix, DB
- #33-Stephon Tuitt, DT/DT
- #62-Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE
- #93-Pierre Desir, DB
- #126-Anthony Steen, OG
- #TBD-Joe Don Duncan, TE
- #TBD-Jeff Janis, WR
- #182-Trey Burton, WR/TE
- #190-Zack Kerr, NT/DT
- #229-Dexter McDougle, DB
- UDFA-Chris Boyd, WR
- UDFA-Mike Pennel, DT/NT

The UFA signings have cap hits listed below them; I can give you the details on the terms, guaranteed money and signing bonuses if you are curious.

The dead money includes Aaron Hernandez, Dan Connolly, Isaac Sopoaga, Steve Gregory, Adrian Wilson, Ras-I Dowling, Tommy Kelly, Daniel Fells, Ryan Mallett, Lavelle Hawkins, Zach Sudfeld, Ben Bartholomew, Kanorris Davis, Chris McDonald, Josh Kline, Justin Francis, Brandon Jones, Brandon Ford, Stephon Morris, Matt Stankiewitch, Mike Zupanic, and Dewayne Cherrington.

I would sooner have another UDFA like Hoyer than spend money on Clausen at this point.

I'd like to see how you got Gostkowski's hit that low.

I'd like to see how you got Gostkowski's hit that low.

Miguel's take on the Gost
"Extend Gostkowski’s contract by 4 years while giving him a $5 million signing bonus and lowering his salary from $2.9 million to $900,000 – cap savings – $1,000,000"

Um yeah....your scenario ain't gonna happen Brady6.

People really think ANYONE is going to give up the 33rd pick for Mallet?

I was hoping your offseason plan was starting less posts.... :D

Mack at 6M / year and Edelman at 4M / year. Seems kind of low.

I am not sure what you have against Clausen as a backup QB, personally I think he is a good fit. He played for Weis at Notre Dame so he has experience with complex offenses and he could likely be signed for the league minimum which is $630K. He is also just 26 years old with some talent so he could be a nice project for JM.

I'd like to see how you got Gostkowski's hit that low.

Made his base $950K in 2014, I extended him for 4 years/$13M with a $4M signing bonus, his 2014 salary, and half of his 2015 salary are guaranteed.

Would love to resign both Talib and Edleman and if we could get Mack and Johnson in free agency that would be great!!!! People are saying its going to be tough to resign both Talib and Edleman, never mind signing Mack and Johnson as well.

I would rather Pryor than Dix but I think you hit all need areas in the draft including ASJ who I like.

I don't think it's possible to trade Mallet for a 2nd rounder though. At this point, I don't think the Pats would take anything less than a 2nd, maybe a 3rd for him, but I bet all we would be able to get would be a 4th, maybe if Shiano was still coaching a 3rd. lol

Um yeah....your scenario ain't gonna happen Brady6.

People really think ANYONE is going to give up the 33rd pick for Mallet?

Bill O'Brien could take Clowney, and if he does then Mallett offers a lot of upside for a second round pick. Ras-I Dowling was the #33 pick 3 drafts ago, in 2012, we used #48 on Tavon Wilson, and I cannot see why a team would not be willing to roll the dice for Mallett who has the tools to be a franchise QB.

If I had to guess, you like other are confusing lack of opportunity with lack of ability. Mallett would need 10 fingers from god to leap frog Brady on the depth chart, which means it was never going to happen. He did beat out Hoyer for the backup job within 1 season of entering the NFL and Hoyer was a starter prior to injury. On top of that, he has improved in every preseason of the past 3 years, his technique is drastically improved, and he has not had any character issues. He was considered a top 25 talent in 2011, when we selected him at #74 it was considered a great value so I do not understand what he has done that would make you think he is not worth #33.

I will remind you that in 2008 people thought Cassel sucked in the preseason and never thought he would have any trade value, he went on to net a second round pick and was pro bowl QB. Unless you are at practice or in the meetings you have no idea what Mallett is doing, he is Brady's backup.

Needless to say my plan does not hinge on the 33rd overall pick.

My major concern with this offseason plan would be that it's setting the Patriots up to be in rough financial shape from 2016 onward. Realistically, they won't be able to afford to pay Michael Johnson and Alex Mack both $9.5-10M in 2016. This is especially true if they're restructuring Wilfork in a way that pushes guaranteed money for him into the future.

I'm also not as high on Michael Johnson as some others in the first place. He's had one very good year out of 5 in the NFL, and is coming off of a season-ending injury.

I also think Cooper and Edelman will both get more on the open market than you've allotting to them, but Cooper in particular would be a great deal if he can be had for your numbers. Big fan of your draft, as well, although Clinton-Dix is a bit worrisome, and I wouldn't be surprised to see ASJ end up going long before 62.

If it was up to me, I would keep Tommy Kelly, as well. The guy is really good and he has a small cap hit. If he doesn't look to be recovering well from the ACL tear, then that obviously changes things, but if he can get back to reasonable health, he's a bargain at his current cap hit.

Having said all of that, I do like this plan as a rough outline for what the Patriots may be able to accomplish. I'd be pretty excited if that's the offseason that they came away with; the feeling that they overpaid for Johnson would be offset by feeling awfully good about what they were able to get Edelman, Cooper, and Blount for. Plus trading the #33 for Mallett would be a great deal in its own right.

Mack at 6M / year and Edelman at 4M / year. Seems kind of low.

I agree, but if you remember last season teams did not divvy up for UFAs outside of a handful.

In addition, I did it based on what other players have received in recent years - $6.5M would give Mack the third highest APY of any center in the NFL. Edelman would be in the top 32 receivers for APY and his contract would align him with Lance Moore, Nate Washington, and Jordy Nelson who are all on their second contracts and are second and third tier offensive weapons.

Mallet trade won't happen. All of your FA signings seem to be on the low side. I don't seem the pats being able to afford Cooper, Mack, and Michael Johnson on top of Talib, Edelman and Blount. If they did, it would give them very little cap flexibility next offseason, which I think will be crucial. do like the ideas of extending McCourty and Gost. Both are key contributors to the team.

Clinton-Dix seems a little rich for me in the first. I would rather move back and have 4-5 picks between 2nd and 3rd rounds. I like the idea of drafting these guys in rounds 2 and beyond:
su'a-filo/gabe jackson
troy nicklas/ASJ
Christian Jones/Telvin Smith
Bryan Stork
Antone Exum
Colt Lyerla/Trey Burton

I would rather address oline in the draft and think that we are set at receiver unless its a minimal contract to a guy like Sidney Rice, Britt, or Sanders. The guy I want signed in FA other than our own is Art Jones. I feel like he is the type of player BB would bring in and can offer some positional versatility in playing DT or DE in a pinch. I would like to use him as a DT.

The only two guys I would flat out cut would be Adrian Wilson and Soap. I would see if Kelly would take a pay cut to stay and Gregory is pretty underrated IMO, not great but not terrible either. Solid player. Plus, he was invaluable when the D lost Mayo because he was able to wear the green dot and direct the defense when Hightower couldn't handle it. BB raves about the guy's intelligence and players say he is like having another coach. He is not going anywhere.

I admire the work Brady6 but I absolutely hate the idea of going safety in the first. Sorry but that ruins it all for me. However, ASJ, Tuitt, Burton and Kerr have all been favourites of mine for a while so there is some redemption :)

Edit: I hope they don't cut Gregory and Kelly. Both are being largely underrated in these parts.

The flat cap had a lot to do with that last season: you had a bunch of FAs and not a whole lot of cap space. You had a couple of teams with a bunch of cap space spending like drunken sailors at the start of FA (Indy), then smarter teams that waited that out and picked up bargains once the others had blown their money and a bunch of FAs were left standing around without much money left to go around.

That's why you saw a bunch of UFAs take short money, figuring that they could play out short term deals and hit the market again ASAP. I'd be surprised if it happens again this year, to be honest, but if it does that would be the best way to get most of the guys that you highlighted on short money.

Lost me at Clausen.....JC has no business in the NFL. He does edge out Brady Quinn though.......so he has that going for him....which is nice
PS....Brady6....congrats on your big year......20 posts per day.

Agree 100%!

I like most of it, but the things I don't see as reasonable:

Mallet for #33 is too much of a stretch
ASJ at #62 is also much later than I think he'll go

The things I don't like:

Releasing Tommy Kelly - He should at least get a chance to compete if he is healthy. He was doing very good things for us. Our defense fell apart moreso when Kelly left than any other player. In less than 5 full games he had 2.5 sacks and 20 tackles. That was keeping up with Geno Atkins and far outpacing Henry Melton, the 2 franchised 4-3 DT's last season.

Kelly can be restructured to a vet min given his age and injury. He can still be a monster IMO and can be invaluable as a teacher to a younger 5tech DT where VW doesn't have nearly the same experience.

I love the pickups of Mack and Johnson as well as working in Edelman and Talib. Mack may be the single biggest upgrade this team could get. He'd improve an already good running game and maybe cut last years sack number by 25-40%.

My biggest concern with your plan is that the defensive interior becomes too weak. The great pocket passing quarterbacks which rule the AFC are hurt by interior pressure, edge rushers are dominant in the NFC where all of the scrambling QB's are, we don't have that issue in our conference. Pass rushing DT's are king here.

I'm not entirely in love with the idea of relying on Jones, Armstead, and a rookie to be the guy next to VW. Chris Jones vanishes too much, and Armstead has proven just as much as Tuitt in the pros.

I am only guaranteeing the Johnson 2014 base, which is $1.5M and a $ 6.75M signing bonus, which is a total of $8.25M guaranteed. I basically used the guideline of what Avril received from Seattle last year, I just added a 3rd year.

In 2016, Mack has a cap hit of 5,750,000 in and Johnson would have a $9,875,000 hit. I project Wilfork and Mankins to either be gone or have much lower cap numbers, which is why I staggered the hits. I also aligned Johnsons contract to end when Chandler Jones would be projected to start making substantially more if we are unable to afford both of them.

I see a very deep WR draft and UFA market so I am not sure that players like Edelman and Cooper with just one year of production will be big ticket items. Cooper's contract would put him in the same APY as Jordy Nelson and Edelman would be in the top 32-35 of all NFL receivers in APY.

Right on, thanks for the clarification. I would be totally fine with Mack seeing the full value of that contract, I love the guy. He's a stud, and we need another one in the interior of the line. I'm not a huge fan of paying Johnson that money, but if we can sign him with that little in guarantees, then I'd definitely be on board with that, especially since, as you mentioned, it shouldn't impact the ability to pay Chandler Jones when his time comes.

I am not all for a safety at #29 either but it's been a need for so long and although I really like Harmon (I won't lie I even like Wilson) I am not sold that they can be the answer.

I'm thinking of all the years Belichick drafted DEs in the second or later, it was not until he took Jones in the first that we got a player that filled the need. So that is my philosophy with making the selection.

Kelly is a player I would bring back during the preseason on a non guaranteed contract.

I agree Gregory is underrated but if you overrated him he would not be worthy of carry the #20 cap hit of all safeties in the NFL. I would love to retain him but not at $3.7M, he has missed 6 of 32 regular season games, and he doesn't play special teams often. I just do not believe he gives us $3.7M more than Harmon.
