Unless it's a lesser player they're replacing Gregory with. That said, I think it indicates that the team is either (a) feeling good about Harmon, or (b) is targetting one either in FA or the draft. As for Gregory, oh well. He's a back-up at best that was earning some nice coin. He'll get a job and the team will get salary cap relief on top of hopefully putting a destroyer next to McCourty.

I think it probably indicates both. We'll need another safety regardless of how the FA feels about Harmon.

Yeessssssssss !!!!!!!!! Thank you Bill!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Follow up: Now it's time for the team to cut Adrian Wilson. We might also see our resident second round special teamer get a boot in the ass out the door as well.

Next in line Soppoga ,Kelly? Wilfork?
Mankins Restructured? My surprise cut which would catch everyone off guard Mike Vrabel he is a bit overpaid for what he brings to The table.
This is going to be interesting. Does anyone else have any insight on a surprise cut.

As someone else mentioned, I think this probably reflects confidence in Harmon more-so than anything.

Harmon was a rookie last year and he was a 3rd round pick. You don't pick a guy in the 3rd round if you don't think he can start. Harmon played pretty well last year. As much as I'd like to think we'd be going after a top Safety via the draft or FA, I think it's doubtful. Bill also used a 2nd rounder on Tavon Wilson just 2 years ago. Strong chance he hasn't completely given up on him just yet either (although I think he's toast, merely a STer).

I wouldn't be surprised if they pick someone else up to be depth at Safety. But my thought is Bill is comfortable going into the season with Harmon and McCourty as the starting Safety duo. We'll see how it pans out.

Top priorities on defense are Talib and D-line first. Then Safety and LB depth IMO.

Later Stephen, we'll always have the scoop return on the butt fumble.

How is it that you're communicating with us from the mid-2000s?

I think they'll just keep T.Wilson because he's a good cheap special teamer.

I'll be very upset if we cut Vrabel, I like him a lot.

I'd also be confused. Probably more confused than anything. Yeah, definitely more confused.

I didn't see anything in his rookie year that would lead me to believe that Harmon is more than a back-up himself. That said, it was still his rookie year and he does have room to grow. But I'm sticking with what I said at the beginning of the offseason: the team, through FA or the draft, needs to bring in someone that is going to light up receivers going over the middle. For too long now, the back end of this defense has been softer than a sponge cake. McCourty has the range and the ball skills. Pair him with a destroyer that isn't a total liability in coverage. There are some very interesting prospects in the draft if the team doesn't want to go the FA route for a guy like Ward.

It's time to follow Miguel's road to 30 million in cap space before FA:

Patriots Salary Cap

1. Cut Sopoaga
2. Cut Gregory - check
3. Cut Wilson
4. Cut/Restructure Wilfork
5. Extend Gostkowski
6. Extend McCourty
7. Extend/Cut Connolly

How much to they save by cutting T.Wilson?

Not a whole lot, but he's been next to useless. They can replace what he gives them on special teams.

I think this means A Wilson is more likely to stay

Ben Volin ‏@BenVolin 53s
Source says no RT @STIsmail: @BenVolin Any word on whether Gregory was asked to take a pay cut before he was released?

That's a little upsetting, it was also said that Gregory feared this was coming. I would have liked him to stay n the team. He still knows the defense.

I think Rodney Harrison could also be a cut, in addition to Vrabel.

I was thinking the same thing. They could sure use a physical presence back there next to McCourty.

Hope we see him back at vet minimum at some point. Quality backup. Just not a great starter.

Not really. I would be shocked if he makes it onto the final 53 man roster. He looked awful last year, by all reports. From what I saw, the reports were correct.

I think they may need to cut Drew Bledsoe and give Brady the starting QB job, I know he just signed the big new deal but I think Brady can be better.
