Steve Smith Cut. Sign him now

Dobson was able to get open a lot, but struggled with catching the ball early in the season. The foot really hurt his later games.

That's what I look forward to. The drops he was crucified for stopped eventually and the foot should be good next year. Count me disappointed if he doesn't haul in 60-70 catches next year.

The drops were really only his first 3 games

Absolutely I do in Dobson's case. I know some disagree about it but there was a stretch of games mid-season where Dobson emerged. The drops stopped, he and Brady finally started connecting on the back shoulder throw and he can make deep plays. Granted only one connected for a 80yard TD but there was more than one occasion when he wound up open deep however it just didn't connect.

Also in that couple stretch of games, TB was targeting and hitting Dobson more than Edelman. Unfortunately that progression halted w/the lingering foot injury. I think it is totally unfair to judge his lesser production in the few games he played with the injury. IMO his upside is more than some seem to think. Would not be surprised if he is our leading WR next year, especially if Edelman walks. Dobson improved very significantly from Week 2 to his injury versus the Donks.

I agree with all of this. It coincided with Gronk's appearance, but Gronk and Dobson appeared to be the one-two punch and Amendola and Edelman were relegated to second fiddle. Then Dobson and Gronk both got hurt and it was back to Edelman and gimpy Amendola as the only options.

But yes, I'm bullish on Dobson. And that's fairly rare for a rookie, as I'm usually one cautioning against being too optimistic about a player (see my opinions on Collins, who is promising but the sample size was too small).

Smith seems psychotic.

Smith is on the wrong side of 30. His talent and explosion is going to start to dwindle here real soon

They are different players. Smith has been a #1 his whole life

I don't care about his age, I care about his ability. Did his on-field performance this past season appear in decline?

I only saw 1 Panther game so I have a very limited opinion on the subject but I did see him get the better of Talib.

Anyway, the age bit is just correlative of declining performance, not causative. Reggie Wayne has been playing very well of late, before he injured his knee when attempting to cut, but that kind of stuff happens to younger players too.

I have watched him for 10 yrs. here in Charlotte.
SIGN HIM.
Better than anything we have.

Who would he try to fight first?

Smith seems psychotic.

Psychotic can be good. When the Zombie Apocalypse comes I want a maniac with a shotgun and nothing to lose on my team. I won't care if he had some assaults on his record. The SB is the Zombie Apocalypse.

Load up on the shells Joker.

If Smith reaches Foxboro, he'll sign a contract. He's a good fit as one of our top two downfield receivers.

I've wanted Smith since word came out that the Panthers wanted to part ways with him.

I'd much prefer him to, say, another young guy, like LaFell. We already have youth at the WR position, so I'd like to see a guy like Smith come in to take those guys under his wing. Moreover, I think he has the drive and motivation to still be a very productive player for another two years. And, lastly, I want the tenacity and viciousness and alacrity this guy brings to the table.

When you got teams like the Ravens, Steelers, and Broncos (especially with the Talib & Ward additions) to contend with, I think you have to match them when it comes to toughness. Smith helps you do that.

Ultimately, signing Smith has tangible and intangible qualities to him that bode well for this team. I'm really crossing my fingers that we get both him and Browner. Talk about an intimidating team identity... :rocker:

They have to sign steve smith at all costs

Realistically, does Steve still have anything left in the tank? He will be 35yrs old...

I don't see all the hype on this guy? He has a "Dez Bryant" attitude, as well.

That "Dez Bryant" attitude is what makes him Steve Smith. How disrespectful lol, steve is probably the most competitive player in football, great if you're a teammate (unless you're ken lucas) and horrible if you're on the other team because he isn't backing down or letting anybody get the best of him. Part of why he went off against Talib.

People actually want this turd?

He had 800 yards last year. His skill set is rare - he's short but can excel in the deep passing game.

He's moving to the slot at his age. And we don't need 35 year old slot receivers.

The WR market has actually moved VERY SLOW. there are still Alot of quality WR's out there that the pats could go after

Nicks
Sanders
Steve Smith
Edelman
James Jones.
Brandon Lafell.

If he doesnt cost much I would want Nicks or James jones. bigger in size. would add a nice outside receiver to compliment Dobson on the other side. leaving the slot open for Gronk/Edelman(amendola)

My preferred WR's:

1) James Jones
2) Nicks
3) Steve Smith
4) Sanders
5) Edelman

I could go either way @ 4/5 although I don't think Edelman is nearly as good outside as some people are making him out to be, which is where we need the help.

Teams reaching out on WR Steve Smith: Ravens, Patriots, Chargers, Redskins, Seahawks. Smith expected to talk to Ravens' Gary Kubiak tonight.

WR Steve Smith set to visit #Ravens first of the 5 teams interested in him. But he is not in hurry to pick his team. Wants to take his time.

Steve Smith still in Baltimore meeting with Ravens. No other visits planned yet, but they are expected to come soon.

He could just be going to the Ravens first out of courtesy because they showed interest in trading for him, but maybe they're not his first choice if those last lines are anything to go by.

The way I see it, if both the Pats and Ravens are going for both Edelman and Smith...Edelman is looking to get paid and a long term deal, which we didn't care for. Smith's already getting 3 million from the Panthers no matter what, is in no hurry, and just wants to play for the right team to finish out his career. No long term commitment required, which is something we clearly like.

He's gotta be thinking ring and Superbowl. So Redskins are out.
And wants to be somewhat close to Charlotte and his family which makes the Seahawks the least likely candidate.

That leaves us, San Diego only because of his relationship with McCoy or Ravens. So if he doesn't sign with the Ravens today, I think we have a pretty good chance of landing him if BB wants him.

Assuming this guy knows what he's talking about and isn't just making stuff up...
