Brace yourself for Shock: Could the Patriots go WR in the 1st round?

Thus for about the hundredth time, I will opine that taking ANY WR in the first round is madness. Yet sadly, (because we should know better from our own recent experience). this WR thread will persist, and many others will follow, both here an on the main board. The national obsession with WR's will continue. I just thank GOD that BB is NOT a part of it.

I have always opposed round-1 WRs on principle. But the amount of time the Patriots have been spending on highly-rated WRs, combined with the best WR class in recent memory...nothing would surprise me this year.

Benjamin in the 1st
Robinson in the second
double dip double dip
This would make the Patriots receivers a incredible competitive group.
Then go completely defense in the middle rounds.
This I think is going to give the Patriots the biggest boost to the talent level of the team.
If they grab these 2 receivers and deonne buchanon then draft the athletically gifted tweener safeties and backers.
Draft d line and o line in later rounds.
Thats my draft hopes.

While it is possible it is also highly unlikely. Unless Belichick sees a guy who he thinks will dominate at the position for the next five years at #29 then he will go for value and draft one later and develop them. As things stand now i think the most likely selection is going to be fronty seven on defense with Nix, Hagemmann, Tuitt, Crichton, Ealy, or Shazier as the pick. 3-4 of those named will likely be gone and I think he takes the prospect among that group who he has rated the highest. while i was adamantly opposed to Shazier a month or so ago things have changed enough for them that I can now see him as a serious prospect in the first for them. I do think he is looking for more speed and coverage ability among his LB's and that Shazier could contribute from day one if they took him. They have no depth at all at the position and although Shazier would not have fulfilled their prototypical requirements in the past due to his size i think that is changing and he will be willing to take a guy under 6'3 and under 240, which he really hasn't ben willing to do in the past at LB.

Ultimately i think he is looking to fill roles at LB, DL, interior OL, and at TE, and i expect at least one of each in this draft. Hopefully they fill two of them with the #29 and #33 picks.

If they do go receiver early, one of my favortie receivers from this class, Allen Robinson, is apparently having a great pro day. I wonder if we would drop to our second round pick though, 29 seems a little high for me.
Yes he has. 42" Vert, 11' BJ and a sub 4.50 forty. It's interesting that the Pats have had contact with every first WR save Watkins but haven't with Robinson. Does that mean they're interested in Robinson and are concealing that interest (or already have enough info from BOB) or does it mean that they don't value him as highly as the others?

Anyway, that pro day makes him interesting. I know Merrill will say that he already was and fair play to him on that score.
OK, just saw that he also had a 6.5 3-cone. He's just moved from "interesting" to "bloody likely"! The interest they've shown in WRs, the Penn State connection, those athletic numbers and his production/leadership in that offense does seem to be a confluence of events. Back to the film room for me.

I've always wanted him, but I also always thought they would sign a free agent DE. At this point I'd rather go DL or LB, but I still like Robinson. Those are pretty good numbers for someone of his size, production, age, and scheme fit.

For all the attention Dez Bryant gets as an athlete, Robinson has the advantage in height, 40 time, vertical jump, and 3C.

I'll be thrilled to so those numbers push Robinson into the top 28 picks. :D

The Panthers make too much sense at 28. I think that's his floor. How could they pass on him?

as far as Robinson goes I see it more like Replacing The Prisoner more than i do adding a WR. technically he's a WR but they would ask him to play the hybrid TE/WR role as they did The Prisoner. (As Always credit goes to Pissah for renaming the former Florida and current Bristol County jail "TE.")

He ran the entire route tree at PSU and was coached by Bill O'Brien... sounds as good of fit as you ll find

Robinson is a perfect fit for the Pats. He already pretty much knows the Pat's playbook (similar to PSU's), he is very talented, very productive, therefore, Robinson has no shot in hell becoming a Patriot. BB never does the expected, nor does he do what others think makes sense.

If we do draft a WR in this draft I have a few guys I would find to be decent value.

Here is a quick break down of WRs id like for the pick in question.

#29 - Lee
#62 - Adams
#93 - No one. A few people in this range are okay but no one sticks out to me as great value.
#130/#140 (if they fall) - Abbrederis, Latimore (he will rise up here if he has not already).
5-7th - Street, Janis, Coleman.

Bob, do you think Janis and Coleman will be there in the 5-7 rounds ? I would not be shocked if they both get picked in the 4th.

Coleman is being over mocked IMO. He has size but his other tools don't impress me and size isn't enough to make it in the NFL if your other tools are merely average. WRs need to get separation to do well and Coleman can't do that consistently. GMs and coaching will see that and draft him accordingly.

Janis could rise for sure but the guys ahead of him are really not floundering enough for it to happen. A 4th rounder is possible but I still think he falls to round 5 or lower.

Now wait a month and watch me be proven wrong! Then rub it right in my face : p

Not that kinda draft fan Bob. I hope you are right, and we wind up with one of them late, with Janis being my obvious choice.

Nooooo unless we trade 2 of our own wrs

I think if a highly touted wr is there at 29, some other team will be looking to trade up. Like Minny did last year with Patterson. Detroit is making noise about Watkins. They won't get him. But, could go cb in first and move up to 29.

I agree with the thoughts of many. Unless the Patriots are going to trade into the top 10 of the draft, no WR offers anything the Patriots don't already have. DT/DE/OL/TE are greater needs than WR.

Getting the WR in the first round hunch as well. Wouldn't be upset by Beckham at 29.

Cody Latimer Pro Day 40 time is legit, I have his splits as follows:
10-yard: 1.57
20-yard: 2.57
40-yard: 4.40 +/- .3

Cody Latimer's 10-yard and 20-yard splits are the same as Brandin Cooks'.[/QUOTE

Latimer is becoming my favourite receiver in the draft and is a perfect fit for us, particularly if they play him in the slot. Great call on him. And you won me round on Robinson too.

I've been on the Latimer train for a long time too. I need to revisit Robinson but he had a JAG look to me the first time around.

I am so sold on Allen Robinson it's not even funny. I view him basically as a taller Edelman with a little bit of AJ Green in the mix.

I want us to draft a wr high or not at all. If we don't get anyone like Evans, Lee, Robinson, Cooks, etc we would just be wasting a pick when a mid round wr probably wouldn't offer more than what Collie, Boyce, and Thompkins would in their second year here.

He's in my second tier of WRs. I think he's going to end up as a second-day guy.

Are they good enough to make your top 100??? :)

Revaluation is vital. It doesn't matter how wrong a GM is in January if he's right in April or May.

Could you be putting too much emphasis on the results when you scout Robinson? I'm often blaming the poor QB play. It holds him back and when evaluating one must adjust for that. Look at the QB ratings of the other top WR's QB.

Benjamin - 184.8
Evans - 172.9
Beckham Jr - 171.4
Watkins - 168.7
Bryant - 168.7
Adams - 156.1
Lee - 148.8
Robinson - 134.0
