Tom Curran: Mallett to the Texans may soon be done.

The right structure for all concerned is Houston's third plus a conditional future pick (or pick package).

The fixed part of that is likely tolerable for both side, both in substance and in PR.

Houston has the first pick on day two with Derek Carr, and AJ McCarron still on the board I would be shocked if they pass on both of them only to trade there 3rd for Mallet. if we are talking Houston's 4th or 5th round pick then I could see them doing that but that would mean that BB is just dumping Mallet and that does not help the pats at all

Am I the only person in this forum that realizes that Mallett has 1 year left on his contract and that little fact hurts his value, not helps it?

It seems while I am not the only person who realizes this, I am a part of a very small minority.

BTW, it's entirely possible that this trade still goes through. We have about 3-4 rounds of picks to go through before we get to Mallett's trade value so that's plenty of time to get something worked out....

If I were them, I would grab Derek Carr in a heartbeat. He is IMHO the best pro-prospect at that position this year. You just have to ignore the discomfort of him being the brother of that other guy who used to play for you.

After the success they had with his older brother the Texans obviously world want Derek Carr...

That has no relevance to whether or not Mallett is a better prospect than the remaining Quarterbacks in the draft. The same goes for Cousins and Glennon.

I subscribe to the theory that most people overvalue what the Patriots can secure in return for the Patriots but still, it's a matter of opinion.

I don't remember anyone thinking David Carr was a reach at #1 (I could be wrong though). Derek has hardly been in the conversation as a first round grade, so if he's already worse than his brother at this point it should be even harder for him to get over his NFL-bust DNA.

Why does everyone assume it is going to be pick 33 and not a 3rd or 4th?

Yes, it hurts his value...slightly. But teams trade for guys with one year left all the time. Then extend or rework the contract.

I could live with that.

Wishful thinking?

If Houston isn't happy with the QB value on the board at #33, they could draft one in the 3rd or 4th round, and make a deal for Mallett and let them compete for the job. If Houston goes for Mallett it could be a late pick this year - say #211, and a sliding 2nd-7th next year depending on PT. Given the paucity of Mallett's results as a pro (including pre season) why does everyone suppose we'll get all the value for him THIS YEAR? It makes no sense from Houston's standpoint.

If he blows (his poor footwork, glacial reads, and difficulty getting into a rhythm) all indicate he does, than a 6th and a 7th is a small price to pay from Houston for a one year back-up. If he's good for them then a 6th and a 2nd is a also a good deal for them and for us, since he's not getting a scrap here.

I can't imagine the Patriots trading 1 year of Mallet for anything less than a 3rd. He has too much value, even for just one year, to them.

Good thing you aren't them.

You have been making very definitive predictions based on no more knowledge than any of us have. I always hate doing that, because if I am wrong I look like a total idiot. The people you are critisizing may well be wrong, but they also haven't been stating as fact what they are saying, rather they have been opining about his possible value.

She also doesn't eat crow when she's proven wrong. I'm convinced that SB39 is simply a persona created to just to troll.

I can't see anyway it is 33. From the sounds of it, the Texans are the only ones interested. Why in the world would they give up 33 for a quarterback who's on a one year deal?

Nothing says Fresh start like almost litterally hitting the reset button and draft a rookie QB named Carr the first year into a new staff.

My only thoughts on why it would be 33 is there is ALOT of risk in trading your backup QB now, and hoping there is someone available later that you like. I don't think mallet is worth more then a 3rd and a 5th.

I think you're right, but I could see a scenario where, if they like Carr or McCarron but don't LOVE them, they could view Mallett as their insurance policy. So basically, they fill another need (of which they still have many) with 33, then if Carr or McCarron happens to fall to 65 they take them. If they don't, they grab Mallett from New England for 65.
