Just saw this while putting this morning's links together and found it interesting:

From his "10 Trending Topics" from around the league:

"3. Brady Altruism
The Patriots’ second-round selection of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo made me immediately think about the extension that Tom Brady signed last year. Despite some reports that he “took less to help the team,” I noted that Brady actually received $3 million more than previously scheduled to earn in 2013 and 2014, with much better cash flow.

Next year, however, will tell the story of whether Brady made a sacrifice for the team. Brady is currently scheduled to play for $7 million, an absurdly low number for an A-list QB. If Brady is the starting quarterback for the Patriots a year from now and making $7 million, I will be thoroughly impressed (and surprised) by his altruism.

The Garoppolo selection brought a potentially different angle to this. I could see Tom Brady as the backup quarterback making $7 million in 2015 (or his scheduled $8 million in 2016 or $9 million in 2017). That, of course, would require that 1) Brady accept backup status, and 2) Garoppolo earn the starting job, though I find both of these possibilities unlikely.

I expect Brady’s contract will be upwardly adjusted next year rather than him playing for a fraction of what his peers will be making. Garoppolo’s entry into the mix, combined with the precipitous scheduled decrease in Brady’s contract next year, presents a Hmmm moment. Stay tuned."

Although Brady should retire as a Patriot, it would not surprise me if his Patriot career ends with him being moved by BB.

Brady is still at the top of his game. I saw a reporter on ESPN who had it right. When Gronk was in there last year, Brady looked great. Especially since Brady had just come off what I consider the best year of his career just 6 months earlier (2012-2013).

Tom Brady will "accept backup status" the day I'm coronated as the King of England.

If Brady plays anywhere other than New England, then that is an extremely depressing thought.

I know Brady is probably one of the most, if not THE MOST self motivated players in the entire league...but with the Patriots drafting Garoppoloas high as they did- you would have to think that will REALLY motivate Brady to be even better and to keep that kid on the bench.

I'm still trying to figure out the end game for Brady. Selling the moated mansion in LA, building an estate in Brookline. Either the Brady's just like to spec and flip huge homes or he is setting up long term roots and the Brady's believe Mass. is the best local to raise and educate their kids. I never thought Tom Brady would imitate the likes of Dan Marino in retirement and sell the Brady brand like many former big names....and because of the Brady's combined wealth, I hope he never lowers himself to that level.

There is a possibility that in 2016 Garoppolo is equal to or a better QB than Brady. I'd expect Brady to be traded at that point to an NFC team of his choice rather than be a backup.

Lol, no. Sorry, this is stupid

That is just stupid. Brady likes playing, he's not going to think taking $7M to not play is better than $7M to play. Some people WAY over think this.

We needed a backup for next year who has starter potential either if Brady gets hurt, if his skills diminish or potentially when his contract runs out. We got it.

Garoppolo would have to be a perennial Pro Bowler to beat out Brady in 2 years.

Agreed. Although it's possible Brady declines from a top 4 QB to a top 8-12 QB by the time he turns 39 during 2016 training camp. BB would have to feel Garoppolo is that good by then as well.

This feels sacrilegious even speaking of this.

I love how everyone is comparing this to Favre its not even close to the same situation yet. Garoppolo needs to prove he is good and Brady needs to suck for a few years and retire/unretire several times before this is even close to the same. As it stands now we drafted a backup and in 3 or 4 years when both are close to the end of their current deals a decision might be needed but the information will be so different then it is silly to speculate too much now.

Garoppolo's best case scenario is that Brady decides to retire after seeing a falloff in his game after the next 3 full seasons. I expect Brady to be Brady for the next 2 years. In his 3rd season, if some things become harder for Brady, I then expect him to do one of two things. Retire before he plunges off that hill, or keep pushing on the way some athletes do.

But that's 3 years of play. There is no controversy here until Brady decides to go into a 4th year after experiencing some falloff. That's when this becomes a situation.

It's classic overthinking. Belichick placed more value on a contingency plan for Brady than he did whoever was available at 62 in other positions. People who either don't understand it or don't agree with it, keep trying to look deeper to find something they may have missed, when the only thing they missed was the very simple original strategy: Belichick doesn't want to be caught flat footed when Brady eventually loses it, and he's willing to use a relatively high draft asset to insure against that.

I'm honestly curious.

Does anyone here actually believe that 2013 Brady could not have matched Manning's numbers had he the same weapons around him.

Moss would never have let himself get overthrown.

Put me in the group that thinks the SI article is stupid. Bill Belichick did not draft Garappolo so that Tom Brady can hold his clipboard. He drafted Garappolo because:

a) Mallet is gone after this year and he needs a quality backup QB for a 37 year old Hall of Fame starter...

b) To see if Garappolo can develop into a plausible starter for the day in the not too distant future when his Hall of Fame starter retires, gets injured, or loses his fastball...

People are trying to make this draft pick out to be much more than it is. I'm sure the Pats would be happy to keep Mallet for four more years on another rookie deal. But, that's not happening, so they needed to groom a back up QB. With strict limits on practice time during the off season, you have to start grooming sooner rather than later.

Mentioned this earlier in another thread - but this simply won't happen. If Brady's play somehow does fall off a cliff this year and/or Garropolo simply surpasses him, there is no chance that the Patriots will have a backup QB count $7M against their cap. Nor would he accept that. No chance. A bit of a reach by Mr. Brandt here.

A good rule of thumb is that whenever someone tries to portray a football decision, such as a draft choice, as multi-faceted, complexly meaningful statement about an exact all-encompassing plan that is now going to go into effect, they are full of crap.
Football decisions are made with the understanding that there is no certainty. You are drafting people, not Madden personas. What will happen to Brady, Garapollo, Mallet, etc from this point forward is not known. There will be 1000 occurances between now and 2016 that will have more impact on the assessment in 2016 than all of the combined knowledge and speculation today.

I think Brandt has it backwards, Brady's contract makes it more likely he sticks around not less likely, if his cap hit were 18 million and his play slipping it would put them in a much more precarious place than giving him the money upfront and having a lower hit going forward.
