Though it's been difficult at times, holding court with two ugly wins and splitting road games, including a horrible loss and a great comeback, has allowed us to put 5 in the bank against only 2 losses, one more home game than road game left and a nice break after a tough stretch.
Once compiled, there are no ugly wins, they're all beauty queens. Bye weeks are arbitrary, but we have a good one this year. Besides some rest, we should be able to work on some things now, play two at home and continue to prepare in two weeks for the home stretch.
Here's a list of things I'd like to think the team will work on with the mini bye, 2 weeks at home, the bye week advantage.
1. Continue offensive line school. I think they should continue working with a large group at various position as well as drilling with the three interior spots. We've got high picks at the tackle spots and Cannon and i don't think they're planning on spending big for the interior line spots. Brian Waters was great for a year, but he ain't walking through that door. Most grizzled veteran Olinemen are worn out after years of pounding.
Dante made the template...teach, teach, teach at as amny different positions as possible. Lineman get injured and lousy ones become good with practice. I'd load the practice squad up too and when injuries occur, as they always do - our advantage.
2. WR. The hardest thing on offense IMO is getting receivers in synch with the QB. All QBs get their security blanket receivers, even Brady, who spreads it around with the best. We've got a feast of different type receivers this year, but a bunch of talent out of synch isn't worth one good QB to WR mind meld.
We're a game plan team, we've got almost a 2nd traning camp (mini-bye, 2 at home, bye) why not work on some special packages to get everyone involved? Throw LaFell, Dobson and Tyms out with whatever combo of Edelman, Amendola, Vereen and Gronk you want. 2 TEs, LaFell and Tyms, for a run/pass threat. The options are endless IMO (why BB like LaFell, I'm thinking) but it would be chaos without some time to work on, which we have now.
3. DL. Seems like it's Vince and a bunch of guys, as usual, but i think this Walker can help on the big side, Chris Jones and Easley on the penetrating side and Siliga get to start practicing on the bye week if i counted right. This could be a tremendous area of growth through practice with or without personnel moves. Add a lot of work with Zach Moore for a designated rusher role and we could end up with a versatile, efficient group for the stretch.
4. LB and RB are kind of opposites that wouldn't be on the list except for injuries. If Bolden or Gray or a pickup decides to run hard and focused we'll be OK. Vereen is what he is and that's a passing down runner. He should stay i that role IMO. I don't know what they want at LB, a pickup, or current and PS players familiar with their scheme. Either way, they can use all the time and more, so we'll see what happens.
Might be more, but that's enough for me now.
