2015 Draft Prospect Thread

Well so much for Melivn Gordon's record, I bet he wishes he had played the 4th quarter now. I can't imagine him not having the record will impact his draft stock but then again him getting it did help it quite a bit. Who is Samaje Perine? Ive never heard of him before today, I know he is a freshman but is he even a guy who could play in the NFL?

Watched Minnesota beat Nebraska today.

I was very impressed with the mobility of the Minnesota right tackle, pirsig. Huge guy at 6 foot 9 inches and 320 pounds, but decent mobility.

He is a red shirt sophomore and not a full time starter, so I do not expect him to come out this year, but keep him on the watch list. I think he has future patriot written all over him.

Compare:

Player A

DT
6-1, 323
Broad Jump - 8'5"
S Shuttle - 4.5
3-Cone - 7.62

Player B
(These are unofficial numbers)

DT
6-1, 353
Broad - 8.45
S Shuttle - 4.39
3-Cone - 7.28

Disclaimer: I realise that those numbers are unofficial, incomplete and far from a complete picture of how someone plays but Player A is Vince Wilfork and Player B is ECU's Terry Williams (and there's some Wilfork to his tape). I just thought the contrast was interesting. Having said that, a 7.28 3-cone is hard to believe at that size (numbers from his official roster page). Looking at combine history, the only DT over 320lbs and a sub 7.50 3-cone is Michael Brockers (7.41).

7.28 seems a little hard to believe. I'll be curious to see what Williams eventually posts.

FWIW, Alan Branch had a 7.56 3-cone at his Pro Day in 2007, and measured in at 6' 5 6/8" 324#. Pretty impressive. Michael Brockers had a slight edge (7.46), but they had virtually identical short shuttle times (4.78 Brockers, 4.79 Branch). In all other respects Branch was bigger, stronger, faster and more explosive.

Oklahoma NT Jordan Phillips is a guy I've had in my mocks going back to last summer. Matt Miller mocks him to the Pats at #31 in his latest mock, noting:

"At 6'6" and 334 pounds, Phillips has unmatched size, length and strength at the position," Miller says. "He's also showing quickness and burst off the ball with surprisingly good leverage for his height. And Phillips comes into the NFL with experience in the 3-4 defense, something few defensive tackles get in college football."

I had DE Owamagbe Odighizuwa in my first mock of the year and Rob Rang highlighted his performance last night for UCLA:

He doesn't possess the explosive burst off the edge or nifty change of direction expected of a first round pick. He does, however, possess the stout frame, quickness and power valued by clubs operating out of each alignment.

That position and scheme versatility could land Odighizuwa a spot within the first 100 picks of the 2015 draft and certainly qualifies him as one of the feel-good stories of the year.

If the desire is for a LDE that can both pressure the QB but also be very strong against the run, Odighizuwa (6-3, 270) is a good bet. He's very strong and has a wonderful chiselled frame.

I saw him play earlier in the year. I saw the impressive size, but did not see the strength because he plays so high. In the nfl that will get him blown up all game long.

Tre flowers is a likely pick for a de.

Jeff Risdon on Quinten Rollins, a CB from Miami (OH) that I had in my latest mock:

The casual fan has probably never heard of Rollins. Even hardcore college football fans would probably struggle to pick him out of a player lineup. He’s much more recognizable as a basketball player, where he played four years for the RedHawks and finished 2nd in career steals.

Rollins was a high school football star in Wilmington OH but didn’t play the game in college until this year. He apparently never lost his superlative ability. He’s a well-built 6’1” and 205 pounds, and the quickness and nose for the ball that made him successful on the hardwood clearly translates to the gridiron. Rollins has proven he can make the athletic play on the ball in the air, and he’s shown surprisingly polished instincts in coverage. Run support is coming along nicely too. Rollins is a thumping hitter crashing on the ball, though he’s much better at attacking receivers in space than runners in traffic. He played quite well against Michigan, including a couple of situations where he locked up first-rounder Devin Funchess.

Rollins is another Senior Bowl invitee and an under-the-radar player you need to make yourself aware of. Here is a YouTube highlight reel to give you a taste. Don’t EVER scout off a highlight tape, but his athleticism, closing burst and hitting prowess are on full display. The RedHawks take on my Ohio Bobcats next Tuesday on national TV, a good chance to get an extended look against a Bobcat team with a strong running game and mobile QB.

And the highlight video he mentions

Jeff Risdon again, from the same article linked above on TJ Clemmings:

I’ve now seen three of his games and he’s clearly got the highest ceiling of any offensive lineman in this draft class. He needs work on anticipating blitzes and stunts and he can actually get out to the second level too quickly on edge plays. Don’t be surprised if he winds up being drafted ahead of Texas A&M’s Cedric Ogbuehi or Iowa’s Brandon Scherff. I strongly believe Clemmings is a better prospect at the same point than Lane Johnson, the #4 overall pick in 2013. Clemmings won’t go that high, in part because the offensive tackle market doesn’t appear to be high relative to other years, but he could wind up being better than any of the three top-4 tackles from that ’13 draft.

This is what I've been saying about Clemmings. Tremendous upside.

That's partly why I'm not considering him in mocks right now. Like Brandon Scherff, Shawn Oakman, Bud Dupree - and like Dontari Poe, Ziggy Ansah and Aaron Donald in past years - he's moved into the "should get strong consideration if he's within reasonable trade up range" category.

Clemmings is a "hot stock" right now. I love him, and he is probably all that you say. But last year Cam Erving was considered a potential top 10 pick, and Cedric Ogbuehi was considered a potential top 5 pick. Now the warts in their games are showing. It's not out of the question that Clemmings will have some growing pains before all is done.

Dane Brugler likes Odighizuwa's versatility on the D Line

I think I'd feel okay w/ him anywhere 3-9 technique

https://twitter.com/dpbrugler/status/537138489931083776

And notes that the lack of his sack production is not down to a lack of ability or effort:

Lack of sack production extremely deceiving. UCLA doesn't let him get after the passer 80% of downs

He's going to get ooh's and ahh's during the weigh-in...

And in his last game against USC:

Breakdown: Leonard Williams might have shown impressive strength and run stuffing ability, but Odighizuwa brought the heat like nobody else in this game. He was a constant thorn in the side of USC as was teammate Deon Hollins.

Signature Stat: Notched two sacks, two hits and six hurries in just 35 pass-rushing snaps.

I hope we get to see that cut up on Draft Breakdown.

Just an FYI. USC started two true freshman at guard. I like the prospect. But, stats in games like that are deceiving.

He also went up against Zach Banner who is being highly touted if he declares. I'm well aware that in game stats can't be relied upon entirely, but if you look up-thread, you'll see that others were raving about his performance. If you look even further up thread (ie September), you'll also see that I've been a fan for a while now. I appreciate the info about the freshmen guards.

This is second hand info on Twitter so treat accordingly but apparently Schefter has said that Winston, and not Mariota, goes number one. Daniel Jeremiah also prefers Winston's tape to Mariota.

I am not sold on Winston or mariota. The qb that really had my attention in this draft is Hundley of ucla.

This time last year Teddy Bridgwater was the concensus #1 QB prospect. Impossible to make any prediction so far out.

It just needed Marcus Hardison and Deandre Smelter for the clean sweep.

The nerve of him. I would think he'd check with you first to make sure he included everyone. :p
