Reiss: Patriots interested in trading out of first round

maybe it's disinformation, but i think it's more likely true and what i've said a couple of times out here in the last month or so. the draft is thin, according to the "experts" below the top and they could either fatten up for next year or move down and find some bargains in the second or third round. still, this has been a year of offseason Pats surprises, so I wouldn't bet on it.

Trade UP for Laron Landry. :D

If the Pats see a guy they have rated top 15 drop to 24 they will be less inclined to trade down - and if they see 2nd round value at 24 or 28 they will certainly trade down. This isn't rocket science. The same is true for nearly every team out there.

I think this is exactly how BB/SP go about this business. And this is why it is so hard to predict what the Pats will actually do. What we think and what the mock drafts say don't look at the dynamics of the process and the individual team's rating procedure. Given that and the recent free agency activity on offense and the last two year's drafts, I think we just might see some focus on defense this year - who it may be even BB/SP don't know right now. And this is why the draft Saturaday/Sunday is so intriguing.

reasonable suggestion.

he might still be available at number eight and our 24 and 28 would trade for an eight, according to the Draft Trade Charts. The pick belongs to the Falcons, who need help in the defensive backfield themselves, so they would probably take him themselves, but maybe they'd be willing to trade down for two picks.

not an impossible scenario, i just don't see the patriots paying top ten money for the guy...

The Patriots are interested in trading out of the first round if the opportunity presents itself...
Well, I thought most everyone here knew all along that when our second first rounder (#28) was revealed to be close to the bottom, there would be a chance of trading out of that slot into round two. I also thought that when we lost our second-rounder in the Welker trade, most of us felt that considering the round two talent, it would be convenient to have a pick in that round. Finally, it's been common knowledge that BB likes to have extra picks in each draft (especially day one picks). And any kind of tradedown could not only net us an early second-rounder this draft, but an additional day one pick in '08.

"If the opportunity presents itself." Under BB, it's always been that way.

Well, I hope they don't trade out of the first round. Their record from 1st's to 2nd's is drastically different. They don't miss with their 1st rounders, whereas their 2nd's have been real mixed bags. For example, Mankins, Watson, Maroney, Graham, Wilfork, Warren, etc. Vs. C.Jackson, Klemm, B.Johnson, Marquise Hill. Now, granted, Eugene Wilson, Matt Light, and Branch were second rounders, but it seems the Pats don't miss in the first, whereas they bat .500 in the 2nd round.

 I'm missing your logic here (no sarcasm intended).

Are we saying that because of past history, odds are that any prospect drafted in round two has a 50/50 chance of failing or succeeding because of the round he was selected in? So much for the human factor. ;)

Won't everybody be surprised when we trade 24, 28 and Asante to Oakland for Brady Quinn.

The fact that you are holding C. Jackson (who can't be graded yet) and Adrian Klemm (who was drafted using Booby Griers draft informatin) against Belichick and Pioli is pretty funny. Its also pretty funny that you ignore that they used a 2nd round pick to acquire Corey Dillon.

So, in reality, the Pats have Dillon, Light, Wilson and Branch vs. Johnson and Hill. That is a .667 average. Better than the .500 you were giving them.

The patriots need to find some team with a lot of holes. Four sixth round picks are useless to the Pats so they should try to package 5,6,7ths even 4th. They can move up or down, but if they move up or fill in 2nd and 3rd round, they've gotten some value out of them.

2 of the 6ths can be traded, and some others are tradeable 4-7. Find some crappy team with lots of holes and see what we can get for high and low picks.

Trade UP for Laron Landry. :D

Too funny - I don't know if Salty saw that I was pushing/hoping for the same thing myself - and in fact I see the Redskins as an interested and willing trade partner for a pick where I think Landry would be there for us

The funny part is that last year Salty and I were just about alone in pushing for the Pats to draft Chad Jackson - though some may certainly fault us for that today, the jury's still out - but 2 years in a row we're pushing for the same players!
