Here you go:
  • No way to spin it. This loss hurts. Revis is a special player. He changed the way the Pats played defense. He was that good. The Pats are clearly not as good today as they were yesterday.
  • That said, the Pats are a favorite or the favorite to win the AFC. By the end of last year, it was pretty much the Pats and everyone else. Yes, the Ravens played the Pats tough in the Division Round, but they are not nearly as good and they are not the same team today as they were yesterday after losing 3 key players (Torrey Smith, Ngata, and Pernell McPhee).
  • Remember the Pats were one minute from winning the Super Bowl several years ago with McCourty and Arrington as their starting CBs and Ihedibgo and Chung as a starting safeties. Not exactly the best secondary in the league that year.
  • Until we freak out, we need to see what the Pats do to counter the losses. I think we will see them address this problem by improving the offense and the front seven. I think the Pats will adapt to what they have and what is available. I think the Pats may try to make their defense more of a pressure defense up front.
  • I still cannot see how this was a good news for the Jets. Yes, it gives Woody a lot praise from the NY media and fans, but this signing might actually be a hinderance for them to build a Super Bowl competitor.
  • I don't see Browner coming back. I agree with the sentiment that he is not needed without Revis. I don't think the Pats will be doing the press man as they did last year and Browner is not a zone player. He is only needed if the Pats are going to do press man.
  • The CBs I would be targeting right now are Chris Culliver, Rashean Mathis, and Tramont Williams. They clearly aren't Revis, but they would be upgrades and give some stability to the secondary.
  • I might be targeting Pot Roast right now. Great run blocker and disruptive with the pass rush. If Easley can step up in his second year, the Pats could create a lot of problems in the backfield with that d-line to make up for a lot of lost for Revis. If opposing QBs have to get rid of the ball quickly, then who your CB is isn't as important. Granted he needs to be more realistic about his value, but since no one is willing to pay it, the Pats might have a chance. He might put the Pats ahead of everyone else since he grew up a Pats' fan.
  • I don't think anyone won last night other than Revis. Obviously money is really important to him and he got it. The Pats were weakened and I think the Jets sacrificed building a Super Bowl contender for a shiny toy.
  • I appreciate everything Revis has done for this team. I knew there was a decent chance he was an one year rental. We got everything we wished for from him on that rental. I thank him for last year.

already people are starting to harp on the pats for being "Cheap" but can we put some of the blame on revis himself? 17million next year, 16 the year after that and 15million

most of the media (well IE Felger) and some people here want to harp on the patriots for being cheap. But how cheap can they be when we just gave McCourty a large contract?
Perhaps Revis never intended to sign with the patriots. He always was going back to the Jets. for all the talk that perhaps Revis had changed his ways and put a value towards winning he clearly didnt. if he did he would be with KC or the Patriots. both teams were offering 35million guaranteed

oh well, hopefully he has fun going 5-10 and never sniffing the playoffs again.

The Jets will run the ball and play defense. They signed a excellent CB from the Browns, Buster somethingorother (sp).

A team can win by running the ball and playing good defense. Good defense trumps offense. I would not be so sure that the Patriots have the AFC East locked up this year..There is a lot of time left between now and September, but as of now, the Patriots have fallen fairly far in the talent department and everyone else has added lots of excellent top of the line players....

Sure, this appears to happen every year, but I think we can all be honest with ourselves and agree that the other 3 teams in the AFC East have gotten better while the Patriots have taken a major step back.

Lol it takes way more than one premier CB to overtake the pats in the AFCE

Its a big loss. I am glad they won the superbowl.I dont know if they are the favorites in the afc. Right now they are on par with the donkeys, ravens and alll these other contenders. Secondary is once again in shambles. I just dont want another selection of a defensive back in the draft. Just beef up the defensive line.

On day 1 of the new league year.

One thing I forgot to mention. People killing the Pars for not upping their offer a few million more with guaranteed money are missing the fact the Jets front loaded the contract that the Pats couldn't.

Seriously, sometimes I think some posters are Bond villains. They see the Patriots in a bind on day one, then leave the room assuming their demise is already well in hand.

Sorry, I am just mourning the loss of a style of play that I really enjoyed watching.

Pats have lost a top CB and an aging Wilfork.....Vereen's replacement may be already on the team. The other players that wont be on the team next year are not critical to the team's success and are replaceable without breaking the bank. Now that the Revis chapter is over, BB & Co will concentrate on signing the talent they need...$$$$$ should be available with the Revis departure.

They are doomed to be 8-8, 9-7 at best until they get a QB.

Not only that but we didn't have a lot of cap space to begin with and have Jones, Hightower and Collins coming up soon plus obvious deficiencies to take care of this season. The loss hurts but financially it would have been suicide.. just take a look at the Saints.

Or put differently.. fcuk Aaron Hernandez and his cap hit..

I agree with the bulk of your post, and I don't want to rehash the thread we had last week - but I stand by several people who brought up diminishing utility in terms of Revis' $$. I don't think he won either, other than his ego, which is kind of sad if he needed the Jets to boost that.

That is the funny thing. They could have ignored Revis and most probably could have gotten Brees from the Saints and would haves till had some money left to add depth pieces. This would have given them a higher chance to get to the playoffs than Revis.

I don't know, maybe they plan to really take Mariota in the draft.

Do the Pats get a comp pick since Revis was effectively cut, not necessarily a FA?
What are the best guesses around here for a tampering pick? Swap of 2nd rounders? Sure we may deserve more but it's Goodell.

For a 3rd round comp pick and a move up from 32 to 6 in the 2nd round I'm ok with this.

My random thought...if he is performing at a high level in 3 years...he could very well hold out again

I thank Revis for what he did for us in 2014 but I hate him for what he did to us in FA 2015. It is clear that Mevis is a money grubbing player who is not committed to winning. If the Patriots had given him the exact same amount as the Jets he would have also opted for the Jets why? Just to be the Face of that Franchise he would not be the face of the Franchise here because he would have to play Fourth fiddle behind Brady - BB and Kraft. See # 4 here #1 there see its that simple Mevis wants to be the Larry Fitzgerald of DB's making QB money at another skilled position. I wish him all the best but I hope he remembers we come in the world naked and we go out naked we cannot take $$$$ with us. Guy passed up a chance to play with a proven winner a chance at probably playing in another SB or Two for a Team going nowhere fast $$$$ talks. This too shall past and we will overcome.

I hope Mevi$ shatters both knees on the first day of TC and never plays another down again.

That's just not true. There's always room to work the cap. This is particularly true if they hadn't signed McCourty.
To say the Pats couldn't give money upfront actually implies the Pats don't adle the cap well.
