The Most Egregious Case of Tampering Ever

Not open for further replies.
The tampering team ultimately got the player their tampering targeted. The targeted player is a first-ballot HOFer.

How much more evidence does the NFL need before they act?

Does Revis have to literally set fire to Gillette Stadium on his way out before the league will actually take action?

They wouldnt mind if Revis set the stadium ablaze. They'd probably fine the Patriots for some fire code violation and for a safety violation that could have caused Revis to trip and injure himself as he was running away from the blaze

What happened over the past few days is completely irrelevant. The Tampering occurred months ago when Woody made his original comment about wanting Revis back. By the letter of the NFL rules, his comments were illegal, no matter how some want to shrug it off as Woody being Woody. Those comments alone should result in a penalty/fine against the Jets. And now that the Jets have signed Revis (so soon after they were allowed to talk to him doesn't help) that penalty/should be increased.

I wonder if the lack of action on the tampering isn't a spiteful act by the NFL front office after being publicly called out by Kraft prior to the superbowl on the "deflategate" fiasco.

Of course, nothing has come out of the baseless accusations as far as deflated balls, which leaves the front office in an embarrassing position. So now in a juvenile maneuver they are either dragging their heels on tampergate or refusing to do anything about it.

Just like Deflategate. It doesn't matter if the outcome would have been different. If it is a clear violation of league rules, then it is punishable.

I never said Woody shouldn't be punished. As you said (and I've said) it was a clear violation of a clear rule.

I'm objecting to the "we lost Revis because of 'the most egregious case of tampering ever'" stuff I'm seeing. That's BS.

How many times have we heard commentators around the nation call for punishment against the Patriots (without the final facts in, btw) and say at the same time "....they would have still crushed the Colts even if they were using bowling balls". Outcome is not the measuring stick THERE is it?

Why should whatever NFL punishment comes down have anything to do with what commentators "call for"?

(I also note that back last week or so when there was more optimism about signing Revis quite a few people here were saying that the tampering punishment should not depend on whether or NE kept Revis. Because they didn't did want to see the NYJ potentially get a lesser punishment if Revis stayed. Can't have it both ways.)

The outcome is irrelevant. What the outcome would have been without the tampering is irrelevant.

Any public or private statement of interest, qualified or unqualified, in another club's player or that player's agent or representative, or to a member of the news media, is a violation of this Anti-Tampering Policy. (Example of a prohibited comment: “He’s an excellent player, and we’d very much like to have him if he were available, but another club holds his rights.”)

Without any hard proof that Johnson said it as a calculated and deliberate attempt to sabotage any negotiations with Revis then I wouldn't expect anything out of this other than a fine to the Jets and a late round pick swap.

If such proof exists then the Jets are in big trouble.

When Peter King (known league insider especially w/ the commish) posts this.. it makes me think something is going to happen in regards to a penalty.

From mmqb today.

" I think there’s going to be pressure on the league to look into Jets owner Woody Johnson’s comments—harmless or inviting, depending which side of the argument you come down on—on how much he wanted Darrelle Revis back in January. Goodell will be pressured to consider taking a draft choice away from the Jets this year so that more teams don’t say as a matter of course how much they like and want Player X."

LMFAO the #6 pick in the draft? Yeah, right.

this is the most hilarious thread of all time. Thank you all for making me belly laugh. I'll be sure to come back for more hilarity after it is announced that Woody Johnson will be fined and reprimanded. And, not to pour salt on the Revis wound or anything but don't forget... the Patriots have a $5 million dead money cap hit from Revis in their 2015 financial future. So in an odd way, you still have part of Revis with you.

It took you 4 years to finally come up with a master stroke like this to troll Patriots fans?

Either this is deja vu, or we spoke of this in another thread, but of course we have a 5m dollar dead cap hit. That's the way it was structured the entire time, and why Revis only counted 7m dollars against the cap last year.

I think any team would've taken a 7m dollar cap hit to have one of the best CBs in the league on a one year rental to try and win the Super Bowl, if they could spread the other 5m to the next year when the cap would increase again.

While I agree that we'll either get a low round draft pick or end up swapping a mid round pick, I don't think it's anything to get worked up about either way. Whether it's a 6th round pick or a fine, who really cares that much? I mean, obviously we all would like an additional lower round draft pick, but I don't see much reason to get all worked up about it.

Belichick wasn't going to pay that much on a long term deal, or he'd have chosen to do it--so we shouldn't try and blame Woody Johnson or anyone else. It was a decision made by Bill Belichick and the Patriots front office, who has shown a pattern of not wanting to give up big money for a CB.

The fact remains that Revis came here, helped us get the 4th ring in the Brady/Belichick era, left on good terms, and decided to go back home to New York. We all knew this was a possibility from the day he signed. It isn't like Belichick couldn't have matched the offer had he wanted to. It was a business decision not to.

I have a question for you guys, what time do you think this was taken? Sunset now is about 5-5:30ish. It is bright outside. How long does it take to negotiate a contract with all the numbers and have it signed. Including Revis already being in New York?

Sunset in NY on 3/10 was 6:57pm, not 5 - 5:30pm. Did you forget to set your clock ahead Saturday night? Hey.. but you get an "A" for effort, young detective.

Lmao, not to rub salt in the wound, but this is your franchise's savior and hero winning his only championship with your arch rival.

nope. I rarely reply to the mutual masturbation that goes on here, but this thread is so irresistibly stupid that I couldn't restrain myself from giving you all props for the comedy.

And please... can somebody look after poor poor Ivan before he has a coronary or a stroke over this. Talk about disproportionality... Ivan... Ivan.... chill. Better for your health.

Come on... you don't see the hilarity in this thread? Well worth the 15 minutes to read, laugh, log in and thank you all for the comedic genius. Nighty night. Keep the candle lit for that "swap of 1st round picks" .

someone gets it.

It's the business of the NFL, and I think we saw clear cut examples of most other teams pushing the line as well in the past several days.

It sucks when the team you root for is on the wrong side of things, but it seems to be a standard in the NFL either way.

Revis on the Pats was like a brush in the hands of an artist painting his masterpiece (Superbowl 49). Revis on the Jets is like a third tit on a boar; nice on it's own, but doesn't help the fact it's still just a sh*tty boar.

If you guys ever draft another hall of fame player, be sure to let us know if they ever get that itch to see this side of .500.
