Sign the Beast(s) XXXI -- CB Contingency plans

I wonder how the cap situation would look if they had picked up Revis and Browner's options? Probably would have been better than having neither a number 1 or 2 corner.

lewis would be a nice alternative. saints are letting everyone go, send them a 5th rounder.

Last I heard the Saints were the team interested in adding Browner to their secondary, so we're going to have to wait and see if the front office of N.Orleans agrees with Keenan Lewis' wishes or not.

Yes, the fact that they declined both options definitely makes it much worse.

Of course, some believe that there's no longer a need to keep Browner if we realized that Revis was leaving and we'd be forced back into a zone coverage scheme.

Urgh, 5 hours later and I'm still really pissed off.

The more I think about it, the more I realize it probably wouldn't have been that bad to match (or come within $1-2 mill) of the Jets offer, taking into account the salary cap will be increased by the time we need to sign key guys like Hightower and Collins.

I still put the blame on Revis though.

My CB contingency plan is by getting a DLine that can get after the passer. We will most likely be playing Cover2/3, so get some beasts up front. Hopefully Easley has a breakout year.

Honestly, losing Revis had to be WORST case scenario on BB's mind, but for him to sign DMac before, he had to have a plan.

In Bill We Trust

EDIT: Browner is a cover 3 corner, let's get a zone corner and line up and play. Logan Ryan was great two years ago in a predominately zone defensive scheme. Browner, Ryan, draftee/FA CB, and Butler? That is good enough with the cap space we have to spend on the OLine, Harvin?, Spiller/Bush, etc.

Very roughly about $12M over, meaning you're cutting a number of other players just to get under the cap so the NFL actually approves picking up those options. Basically, not a chance.

I don't care what anyone says, letting Browner go was a mistake. If anything, he had some trade value with that very minimal contract. On top of that, we have most of the personal to run a successful cover 3 just like seattle does. We could've taken Byron jones at 32 who would make a great cover 3 corner. But NO, now we have a bunch of under sized corners, and a patrick chung who has no business being in a true cover 2 scheme. I know were supposed to trust in BB, but Ive been following his every move for a long time, and I really think he might have screwed up on this one.

One day into Free Agency and Belichick has screwed up? This is why I am glad fans don't run teams.

Im not saying he screwed up to the point where we are doomed, but I think he might have mishandled the process, to the point where we no longer have a chance at the best possible outcome.

In all seriousness, I wonder when Belichick really realized that Revis wasn't coming back.

That's a million dollar question we're not likely to know the answer to.

Most probably they had their suspicions for a longer period of time but you can assume the moment they told the Browner camp to look for alternatives to be when they most likely decided that they won't go higher than a certain point at that it will most probably not happen.

The best possible outcome was a Revis extension followed by a Browner extension. Once it became apparent that the Jets had offered Revis a ridiculous amount of guarantees, the best possible outcome was removed from the table.

This is a simple case of factor A directly affecting factor B. B was dependent on A.

I'm interested to see what the Patriots do. I rarely let these moves bother me. There's too much time between now and the start of the season.

Brandon Marshall x 2
Dez Bryant
Sammy Watkins x 2
Odell Beckham & Victor Cruz
Antonio Brown
Demaryius Thomas
Desean Jackson

Unless we trade for Joe Haden or miraculously recover Browner and get Keenan Lewis... Yikes.

You gotta mix it up on defense. You cant play zone the whole game. Problem here is the personnel when it comes to man coverage. Finally have a steady secondary and its alll gone in one night.

Dennard played well two years ago. He also had surgery before hitting the slammer for a bit. He never seemed to be truly healthy this year either. Given it is his third year as a 7th round pick, hopefully the escalators (making a million plus based on snap count I beleive), he gets his body right and comes back strong.

I think the lights got to Ryan, who has been a steady young dB for the most part.

Arrington is a plus slot cb, but atrocious outside, as any fifteen year old fan could tell you.

While Browner is a force, his skills require a top flight man cb be issued with him. Only the Hawks, jets and maybe Cleveland(hayden)/Az(Peterson) have. You also need a plus safety to help over the top.

What we do have is one of the best group of lb in the league. Collins and Hightower were ridiculous this year. Hell, one I'd the wheel routes ht got beat for a td on was a perfect pass to a receiving back. I can't remember the team or back, but he was in good coverage...270#

Then there is this guy named mayo. Granted his injury doesn't bode well, but...Jerod Mayo might be the 3rd best lb this year. Think on that.

By the way, what a sh!t new websie update, worthlessmoing ads take years to load, t is crapo

Today, I am ashamed to be a Patriot fan....if you cannot afford to keep this guy you must be fkin dumb, use Chung now, the seahwaks sign graham and Williams and we lose revis, wilfork, browner maybe, and sign scrubs Arrington, mcsorly or whatever his name is...fkin pathetic decisions, im disgusted I want to barf

Stick this crappy new site and those picks in kafts ass

Easy, Wolf!!

Cannot play Cover 2 with Chung in the lineup. Does BB play a Cover 3 system? Bring Chung close to the line, resign Browner.

One thing some of us are forgetting is that we have the best LB core in the NFL, either in Nickel or 4-3. Mayo (Revis leaving means we work something out right?), Collins, and Hightower is scary.

Have to find a replacement for 75 still.

They made it to those Superbowls because of Brady, not the secondary. Then they lost those Superbowls because they didn't have a secondary that could close it out. Last year the had a secondary that could and DID close it out.

Eh, maybe. Both in 2007 and 2011 the defense kept the Giants to 17 and 21 points. Brady and company should have thought about scoring more points than the teens.

If one assumes Dennard returns to form and Butler continues to progress, am I crazy to think that running a 4-3 up front, Ryan & one of Dennard/Butler playing the outside CB slots, and McCourty & Harmon up top running zone isn't the worst?

If you go to nickle you put Arrington in the slot and take a D-lineman out. If it's a run heavy time, you run a lot of 4-3 and you keep Chung close to the line instead of Harmon.

Idk, just trying to be an optimist. Our secondary isn't currently the best group, but it's pretty versatile, I think.
