I agree we may be the first team to implement 3TE sets on a regular basis....Chandler in line with Gronk and Wright split wide....hell we started the double TE formation so why not
Due to the signing bonus, Hoomanawanui should be expected to make the team out of camp.
People said the same thing about Ben Watson & Daniel graham & gronkowski & Jake f#cking Ballard....
I wouldn't be surprised if it comes down to camp / pre season & they keep a combo of two of Holman/wright/chandler & they pick the cheapest combo...
hell we started the double TE formation so why not
That would be beastly!
Actually, it was started about 40 years ago in the mid-1970s--but Bill Belichick was one of the coaches that was on the staff who first began to use it:

Nobody wrecks the league. Gronk may be the best TE ever, but he has games where teams do a good job on him and limit him. .....What will happen, IMO, is that you will make the defense do things they do not wish to do in order to take away what you can do well.
....
The value of Gronk+Murderer was that the defense needed to pick whether the Murderer was a WR or a TE so whether to play nickel or base. If you play base he is a mismatch in the passing game. If you play nickel, you have a mismatch in the running game. In either case you have to decide whether you can handle both of them in man, or if you must play zone, and then how do you play you zone based on the stress on the seams from 2 active TEs.
I think that Chandler brings this back, but really I think it is a better version because Chandler can be a dangerous on the line TE, who can block well, and Gronk is freed up to be the move guy. We started seeing this last year, with Gronk splitting out, or lining up on the wing, or even in the backfield. That was on a very limited basis because we didn't have a Chandler to take the other role and be effective.
I think the Chnadler signing is going to be an enormous one, not because of what he actually does, but because of the options it opens up for Gronk to be a dominant weapon all over the field. We can actually dictate other teams personnel and coverages, and by putting Gronk in the move spot we can isolate him into mismatches.
Chandler is no Hernandez athletically, but he is freakin' huge and will certainly be a viable threat opposite Gronkowski.
What I'm curious about is whether the Patriots intend to move Wright to WR, or if they still want him to work on improving at TE. Then what? 3-TE sets?
Why is everyone dismissing 6 TD catches from Wright? When they were scratching for TD's.
I'm not an expert but I do recall that the Chiefs used 3+ TE sets to great effect to seriously run over the Pats last year. They had some pretty good TEs but I would say the Pats do too at this point. Obviously the big difference is they have Jamaal Charles, but Pats have Brady, so maybe some similar concepts could work.Andy, once I read your post; I immediately thought - but how could you insert Wright into that Gronk-Chandler mix. Be great to hear your thoughts on how they could use 3 TE set (i would think Wright in backfield, but you seem to imply you think Gronk would more likely be back there in that situation).
Great minds think alike.
I think wright is still a TE. But with less blocking skills than Chandler.
He was fine as a Redzone pass catcher but his production was pretty limited beyond that. The thing that concerned me was that he became less involved as the season wore on rather than more involved which I thought was a bit of a red flag. Hopefully he'll do well in camp and be another asset on this offense.
