Is this the worst FA period for the Pats in the last 10 Years?

No, at least no more than every year something its the worst FA a week into it. And when will people realise as soon as the Jets tampered with Revis, he was never coming back without us keeping the original contract at a mere $20 mil in cap space. Once that original contract was signed, the chances of Mevis being more than a rental was low. Titles don't matter to him; he is a NY kind of guy, especially if he has that kind of guaranteed money to do nothing if he wants to.

It's been an unremarkable offseason following a tremendous season. I'm still in enjoyment mode but if they had lost in the SB or during the playoffs, I'd be underwhelmed at the moves so far

Underwhelmed? Yeah!
That's the way it rolls sometimes. Lots of time before September & sometimes even the best teams have an off off season. I'm reserving premature judgement because that's the rational approach.

I have to admit that the "cousins" line in all his posts has been unsettling, odd, and a bit creepy. Then you add the "toys" in the username in and I'm picturing a guy in his van hanging around the playgrounds.....but then again DW has been on here for a long time and he makes some great points, has been a long time fan, and seems to be a die hard fan of our Patriots..... I say.....drop the "cousins" BS .....and keep continuing to bring it as a fan.....to your post at hand DW.... I would say that in their position as SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS .....with a bunch of players whose contracts were up...,and in a STRONGER Position to negotiate for their last contract......NO way that Pats were signing ANY of the big names out there....Never mind their own.....

Do you realize how creepy you are with the whole "cousins" thing? It is not even remotely cute or funny. Lets forget the fact you are an idiot with zero knowledge of the game or managing a team...or your blatant agenda

Cousins? Really? Seriously are you a child molester?

We are now up to "Sign the Beast" threads numbering in excess of the roman numeral 50.

I wonder if we should start "I don't care. I can't stand it!" threads with the same numerical sequence?

this is the way the pats work through FA every year last year was pretty much the first time in the BB era that the pats gave out big money to a outside FA when they gave revis 12 million,

but if your looking for a worst year I give you 2006 the pats let there two best WR's go and went a full season with Caldwell as Brady's #1 guy they went 12-4 that year and should have went to and won the SB but give up a 21-3 lead in the AFCCG

Looks like some people on here are seeng AFCEast Teams makin moves with veteran established FAs and because BB hasn't signed CJ Spiller, Bush, Harvin Knighton, Stevie Johnson Cromartie & Kitchen Sink and since BB knew Revis was gonna Jet to NY it's easier to say why didn't BB grab a quality CB before most were scooped up. Sometimes it pays off for moves you don't make than those you do. Time will tell but this is March People, Throw on SB Win again enjoy what we accomplished this year from first 4 games of season and those who were callin for BB's head and trading Brady to anyone for picks Should Know Better that we're always right there in thick of things come Playoff time. There still will be moves made before season starts. Nobody took home Lombardi in March.

Belichick is doing what he always does... he invests in quality depth, which pays dividends over the course of a championship season

While we all focus on the names, Belichick focuses on the ROLES certain players can play in HIS schemes

This never makes sense to us in March but it usually does come, say, December, when we'll probably be thankful for some of that depth due to injury too

Aside from that, while I'm not shocked they were outbid for Revis, the Browner cut surprised me as I didn't consider him over priced. I don't know if there were any reports of any internal issues, but you also have to accept that sometimes coaches need to fine tune the personnel for chemistry issues as well

We never know all the things Belichick has to take into account in these decisions...

It can also never be repeated too many times that there's many phases to the offseason, all of which bring with them opportunities to fine tune to the right 53

  • Free Agency - and not just the early free agency frenzy that some are currently dwelling on, but ALL of it
  • The Draft/UDFA - coming up in, where does Goodell have that, now, June? (of 2016?)
  • Trades (often in conjunction with the draft, but also during camp
  • Then camp cuts, and then final cuts

So everyone should take a deep breath and put early free agency in its proper perspective ;)

True but we won the silver in FA last year and that did work out fine.

Yeah, the Broncos and Pats were pretty much the #1 and #2 free agency "winners" last year and both received first round byes in the postseason, so I think they did alright. That said, they were also both in the AFCCG the prior season, so they had something to go on already and were simply adding.

I think we see these "dream teams" fail in the spring during free agency because there simply just isn't a strong enough foundation in place for those teams to begin with.

Do you only appear on the board when bad news happens or in doomsday scenarios? Did someone say your username 3 times while looking in the mirror in the dark? I'm not expecting perfect attendance or anything, but your post history suggests you live here in the off-season to rip the FO, disappear for the season, then show up for Deflategate.

They say don't kill the messenger, but the messenger doesn't pick and choose what he delivers. You seem to take a particular pleasure in appearing when times are their bleakest. It must have been tough for you, watching the Patriots win a Super Bowl.

Anyways, the Revis deal wasn't about average guarantees, you know that. It was about the structure and type, and you know that and still persist.

And seriously, what the **** is this ****?

He is the second highest paid FS in the league...Crazy that we could not think Revis was worth more.

Nobody suggested McCourty should be paid more, not even McCourty. Again, you know that. But again, you persist.

It must have been terrible to have nothing to complain about for so long, and I know you have to make up for lost time, but this is getting ridiculous.

You count Casillas as a "great" player (really???). You consider "Vareen" a hero, even though you can't spell his name correctly.

Explain to me again how you're not a troll?

Interesting take from Mike Reiss, on this matter... makes sense. Do not want to overpay this year, as next year is a big one...

As for the Patriots, perhaps more than anything, the sense from here is that their salary-cap situation -- with an eye toward the future and some potential big deals on the horizon for the likes of left tackle Nate Solder, defensive end Chandler Jones, and linebackers Dont'a Hightower and Jamie Collins -- has them in a mode where they are not as flexible to win a free-agent bidding competition with another team. Part of this was a result of using some of 2015's cap to build the best team in 2014 (e.g., a $5 million charge for Revis), and that strategy obviously paid off.

It's hilarious that this guy always starts his posts with "Cousins" :D

nobody says that you cant have your opinions, but if you criticize BB or the patriots front office you are a hysterical ranter...hmmmm

Yes, you are. And you know why? BECAUSE THIS TEAM HAS BEEN THE GREATEST FOR THE LAST FIFTEEN YEARS AND IS JUST COMING OFF THEIR FOURTH SUPERBOWL WIN. And that is because of the decisions of the front office and BB. So you can write your silly little posts to your heart's content but you better damn well be ready to be called all sorts of things, of which "hysterical ranter" would be the nicest.

As I have mentioned many times, it's very hard to keep a championship team together.

That being said, we'll be fine. The team always finds a way to stay relevant and competitive.

To answer the question asked in the OP, I'd say if you simply look at talent lost vs. talent gained it has to be close to the worst to this point. However, it is still early in the process. Look at how/when we acquired Randy Moss who was one of the more impactful moves the BB machine has made.

The prospect of building a secondary even close to the level of last year has sailed. I hope their defensive focus moving forward is purely on pressuring the QB. Chandler Jones is not the answer. Could barely notice when he left last year, and I barely noticed when he returned.

I just don't want to see the return of the defense that made the likes of Chad Henne and Matt Flynn look like All Pros.

Yes, you are. And you know why? BECAUSE THIS TEAM HAS BEEN THE GREATEST FOR THE LAST FIFTEEN YEARS AND IS JUST COMING OFF THEIR FOURTH SUBERBOWL WIN. And that is because of the decisions of the front office and BB. Bingo. It seems that every year the Patriots end up in the playoffs and 6 of the last 14 end up in the SB and 4 of those 6 they win. Yet every off season when they don't make a big splash in F/A while other teams in the division or conference do there are a group of fans who show up on fan boards and whine and moan how the FO (read: BB) are horrible. Same goes for the draft and who the Pats pick and who the arm chair GM's thought they should have picked. At the end of the day the facts remain, playoffs 12 of last 14 seasons, 6 SB appearances 4 wins. If you can't see why BB and his staff deserve the benefit of the doubt based on that record then why even be a fan, because your standards are way too high and you must never enjoy anything this team does. Start with the basis that they are not going to win the SB EVERY year but one thing is for certain they, under BB, will be competitive which at the end of the day is all we as fans can ask for, anything else, IMHO, is unrealistic.
