Revis Speaks: Pats Not In Ball Park And More.

The patriots could have paid Revis $32M for two years (2014-2015). the team could have chosen to pick up the option. Why should say that the patriots chose not to pick up the option. The fact that he made the statement does NOT imply that Revis wanted them to do so, although an additional $20M for one year's play would likely have been OK for him.

It's all in the interpretation in what he said and how he said it.

"I had the $20m option that the could have exercised and they didn't".

Perhaps he used the wrong choice of words in how he explained the timeline from his PoV but to me, with that statement he is coming close to implying that he was ok w/ $20m in 2015 and the Pats weren't (which is the case here.)

5:00 mark..

I agree that Revis was OK playing for $20M for his 2015 services, and that the patriots were unwilling to pay that amount.

Again when Sheldon Richardson isn't retained and a premier QB can't be obtained (they can't draft one worth ****e) I'll laugh.....in the meanwhile the Pats can retain their core of drafted young stars together(Jones, Hightower, Collins) and have found a gem in Garoppolo. Plus flexibility gained by not carrying an albatross contract like that.

Stop...

Or that you just don't pay a CB the salary of a QB, no matter how good he is.

More warped logic from the best and brightest sports minds this town has to offer....

Revis would have been insane to walk away from that deal from the Jets. Will always appreciate #24 and what he did for our franchise. Played at a discount and represented himself with the absolute highest level of professionalism, effort, and perfection. I will never forget going to the Chargers game with my wife, sitting high up at the 50-yard line, and watching him single handedly shut down the entire Chargers offense.

Hope he fails in New York and resurrects his career back in New England at some point. I suspect he will still have value even into his mid-30s because his game is so focused on preparation and work ethic.

Arriving late to the Revis party, but I hadn't seen this around on the site. Andrew Brandt at The MMQB states that the big differentiator was the Jets willingness to offer a $6M no-offset guarantee for the 3rd year of the contract:

"The key marker in the Revis contract is neither the $39 million overall guarantee nor the $70 million total value. Rather, it is the $6 million no-offset guarantee in the third year that is the differentiator in the deal (and was so with the Patriots). Having the first two years guaranteed is standard fare for top free agents; Revis’s $6 million third-year no-offset guarantee is powerful."

That's a lot of cabbage to be potentially paying to Revis if he's playing for someone else. I'd love it if he had stayed with the Pats but I'm glad they didn't give up a contract like he signed with the Jets. Guy was going to go after the money and I have no problem with that, or anything that he said. And his uncle runs that operation so if he has 2 good years, I bet he holds out the third year. Again, more power to him if he wants to use his leverage, but I'm glad it's not going to be at the Pats expense.

Plus, Kraft even said it (and I was surprised he did): Pats have 3 young defensive players to extend.

I've been watching the Pats this offseason, having to pick and choose their guys because of cap space, losing guys that they liked, but not at their current contracts. My take is that the media that stated last offseason that the Pats should have been "all in" like the Broncos had it wrong:

The Pats WERE all in. And it worked!

But now they have to let some guys walk. Oh well, that's what happens when you're all in. But the great thing is that the Pats managed to go all in without actually sacrificing next season OR the long term. Because they lost some short term players, but they don't have dead money and they haven't lost their ability to maneuver.

And although it's possible the defense may take a step back, I think it's possible the offense takes a step up, now that they've all worked together for a season.

If we knew what we know now, I'm sure that almost everyone here would have signed Revis, Browner and Chung for the $20M it took to secure the services for one year. As someone said, Belichick went "all in". Given the statement by Kraft regarding the need to extend lots of young players, I'm surprised that we even made an offer that was close. After all, the team had the following to extend over the next couple of years: McCourty (done), Gostkowski, Solder, Hightower, Jones and Collins.

I have no hard feelings against Revis...it's a business and for some reason...he just likes the jets. He helped us get that rign..without him? We may not have gotten that far who knows. Sucks that he is on the Jets but i will always be thankful for giving us that 4th ring!

Screw Revis. We don't need him anymore. ;)

Interview w/ Rodney.

Patriots also parted ways with Brandon Browner. “Browner is not getting any faster. For a guy like that to lead the league in pass interferences and all the grabbing and holding, Belichick looked at him and said, ‘There’s no way I’m paying a guy $6 million when I can go and fill in a guy like Malcolm Butler.’ When I was up there, Belichick told me in training camp, ‘Malcolm Butler is a guy I really like, a guy who is going to be a really good player.

I think this is safe to assume. I was kinda hoping the patriots would exercise that option if it came down to it.

We went all in, at $17M, for Revis and Browner in 2014. It seemed a long shot that we would now go all in for Revis at $20M in 2015. It was a possibility.

However, as I look back, it seems that the $20M choice made more sense than a 3 year guaranteed deal at hug money that would have had extreme negative effects on 2016 and 2017.

I'm satisfied with the decisions made. However, over $20M of additional cap room COULD be freed up (we now have $7M) with restructures to the contracts of Brady, Gronkowski, Gostkowski, Mayo, Solder and Arrington. The total cap room could currently be as high as $30M.

I do NOT expect any major transactions. I do think that we are in very reasonable shape for 2015. In 2016 and 2017, these contracts could be restructured or extended to produce over $20M, needed to extend Hightower, Jones, Collins, and to pay for Solder or another starting LT (since Solder is not signed for 2016).

I hear people criticizing revis for maximizing his worth, but if people were being truly honest I totally believe the overwhelming majority of fans if they were in his situation would do the same.I hope saving money can play defense in the playoffs.

Unlike Average Joe, Revis was a multimillionaire before he signed that ridiculous contract with the Jets. Furthermore, he's tried to make an argument that winning is important to him whilst leaving the Super Bowl champions for the Jets.

Revis is a magnificent player but he's also full of ****.

So you'd want to spend money and ruin the teams winning chances now and in the future? Thank god your not in the FO

Winning may be important to him...... but several million dollars more important? Probably not lol.

Revis is what he is. When he gets injured in the next two years and the Jets cut him after the first two years of his mega-deal are up, maybe he can come back to a winner.

I do not hate him or have any hard feelings but I do have an odd suspicion that he will get hurt.
