Pats drafting WR early, according to NESN

The press is fascinating, BB visits several colleges that have good wide receivers... and it is assumed that he will draft a WR....

If anyone can figure out what BB is thinking about anyone or anything, let alone the draft, that would be a major accomplishment.. maybe his visits to Auburn, Georgia, Central Florida and Maryland were assessing O linemen he can develop?? No one knows..

BTW the only prognosticator I ever heard picking a Pats draft choice correctly was Michael Holley who predicted Jerrod Mayo..

I never think about the draft or FA. I trust the organization that has given me so much pride since BB and Kraft got together.

I wish I could say the same for the other teams in other sports that I am a fan of but I can't not even two or three years in a row.

For the most part, those people didn't exist.

They didn't?

What's next- people don't exist who always have to get the last word in and "win" every argument? Because I'm quite sure I know one poster who is like that.

No, they didn't. I was here during that and all anyone did was speculate that Dobson's foot might still be bothering him. Of course, lots of people then built fields of strawmen which somewhat resemble the argument you are chastising. Perhaps that's what you remember.

I am so psyched for the draft, and the upcoming NFL season. I can't wait for the schedule to be announced.

I can't wait for training camp, or the arrival of my tickets.

5 months is nothing! My plan is to get into tiptop shape (lose the beer/water weight) by season's start.

It gives me something to do since I hate baseball.

Jerry Thornton has a pretty good streak going.

I know it is waste of time but I do it anyways. My favorite part is the meltdowns when Belichick passes on the binkies, it's hilarious, Belichick doesn't know what he is doing how can he waste a pick on Jamie Collins..............,..

Well if we do take a receiver at 32 which I doubt since BB rarely goes offence in the 1st round unless it's a lineman, Nelson Agholor from USC looks like he could be a steal.

It's hard for rookie WR to have an impact here but he also returns punts and kicks which I think is a need (don't want Jules to risk injury) so I think he can get on the field.

All in all I think we go defence or oline @32 tbough

You want to get your players?

  • Drop down a few picks from round 1 into round 2

  • With the new draft ammo, move up from current position in round 2

  • Take 2 from the list of DL/CB/WR desired

  • Focus on OL multiple times in rounds 3-6

That's the New England way.

or couldn't afford a pick for Connor Barwin.

If believes that the sweet spot is from 40-55, that certainly makes sense. We could trade down for 50 and 81, and trade the 81 to move the 64 to a 45.

old: 32 and 64
new: 45 and 50

And yes, we would get 2 of our 3 needs filled.

I think folks here would like an additional top pick to fill the third need.

EXAMPLE
Trade 32 for 50 and 81
Trade 81 and 97 for 60
RESULT: 50, 60 and 64
So, we'd swap our 1st and 3rd for two 2nds

Short of significant pick sacrifice, which has not been a BB trademark, or the glorious combination of fulfilled self-interest and schadenfreude that getting a high round pick/swap with the Jets, that's not going to happen. I remember mentioning that as an option that could/should have taken place during the year Collins was drafted, in order to be sure the team got one of the top 3 rated safeties, and getting told that BB simply does not do such things.

You'll lose it, then put it on again during the season. It's a cycle that goes 'round and 'round ;)

Luckily for me, I'm a skinny 175 lb twig, but I've noticed the past few years that as I move into my late 30s/early 40s that the weight goes on a lot easier!

That's "Mariota" the Precog is mouthing...

The idea of drafting any wr is exciting but our track record is extremely concerning. My #1 fear is Devin Smith. I was instantly put off by his blocking. He could be a massive bust but there are quite a few reasons why I could see us taking him.

-played for Urban Meyer
-extremely raw
-very fast
-plays st
-strong hands
-not his team's goto guy much like many guys we have taken in the past
-said to have a good personality

I would also add the ability to go up and get the ball at the highest point, as he excelled at grabbing a lot of deep balls.

As you mention, he hasn't been the best blocking WR (putting it mildly), and was taken off the field in obvious run situations a lot. That said, things are a bit different in the NFL, and Meyer/OSU may have had him in that kind of role in fear that he'd become injured. After all, he was their track star, downfield threat which would've been a huge blow had he become hurt.

I'd be okay with spending ONE of multiple 2nd rounders on him--yes, but only under that scenario. If we don't accumulate at least two seconds via trade, then I certainly wouldn't want to waste the only 2nd round pick on him. No way.

This NESN story is a response to a story by Jason LaCanfora that some teams are expecting the Pats to draft a WR early because of the pro day visits that BB has attended, namely Central Florida (Perriman), Georgia (Conley), Maryland (Stefon Diggs) and Auburn (Sammie Coates).

However:

1. Conley and Diggs aren't really considered early picks, especially Diggs. I can see BB liking Conley fairly early though.

2. This ignores the fact that BB also went to Clemson. Clemson, Auburn and Maryland also have draftable DTs. Conversely, it ignores BBs visit to Louisville who have Devante Parker.

In defense of the theory, I'd say that Devin Smith and Sammie Coates are decent fits in my opinion and BB showed during FA a willingness to upgrade the offensive skill positions.

WOAH...Went to this page of the thread and up pops Miss Big Boobs !

Now I understand what the big fuss was earlier.....

Don't think Ian has quite fixed that pop up problem..... :)

I want a stud CB or OG before we draft a WR..or TRY to draft a WR

Have to agree with your assessment. If we are Drafting for the bogus "best player variable" Let's just hope it's not a long snapper. I suppose if White dropped to #32 you must take him. For what it is worth, I took a later stab on some worthy picks and pigeon holed those into that "Best Player Available" target with a under/over factor of three slots and here is who I come up with and why. These picks are as weird as what BB does:

1st Round (32nd Overall) Eric Kendricks OLB. UCLA Best player available at #32. "The best instincts of any player in the Draft". Is OLB the biggest need? No but we have two LBs who are status unknown.

2nd Round (64th Overall) Quinten Rollins CB. Miami of Ohio Former hoop player. "Quickness and fight..... a better football player!". 6'0" helps

3rd Round (96th Overall) Joshue Mattias G. Fla St. "Immediate starting ability". Needs supervision to "get it".

3rd Round (97th Overall, Compensatory) Marcus Hardison DT Arizona St. 3 tech disruptor with speed. Former QB still learning.

4th Round (101st Overall, Jameson Crowder WR Duke, Productive athlete/return man. Very quick. Slighter Harvin without attitude. Let's not have Edelman at risk in punt returns.

4th Round (131st Overall) Mitch Morris G/T Missouri will be solid and diverse in position.

6th Round (177th Overall) Ladarius Gunter CB Miami, Tall press coverage CB that fits the Pats scheme and he is almost 6'2". Teams did not throw at this kid. .

7th Round (219th Overall) Ben Heeney LB Kansas, Think a little faster Bruschi. The kid is all over the field. Football junkie. Under the radar.

7th Round (253rd Overall, Compensatory) Dez Lewis WR Central Arkansas. Big Body, red zone guy with some good numbers. Solid in the Senior Bowl. Was big fish in small pond. Think Saints Marquez Colston. Worth a shot.

These are not my picks but an experiment in evaluations. Even though two WR were chosen it was not a top priority here.
