if Pats go 19-0 because the dolphins only went 17-0 ?

maybe they should also add that miami record was done before the salary cap era..when it was easier

"While it's true that they could only play who was scheduled, it's also true that with an opponents' winning percentage of .396, the Dolphins' schedule was one of the easiest since 1950.

How easy? Basically, 99 percent of the teams since 1950 had a more difficult season schedule than the 1972 Dolphins. That is a very easy schedule."

While the Patriots haven't had the toughest schedule so far, their .454 far exceeds .396.

pats have also beat the 2nd and 3rd best teams in the nfl this year, on the road!

No asterick, but they were very different times.
Back then, no salary cap, no free agency, fewer teams, etc.
I think it was easier in those days.

The Dolphins are irrelevant except for watching their faces when their champagne goes up in flames.

i agree what they did is totally overrated and deserves a *

The 72 Dolphins should not even be considered a top 5 team in NFL History. They are simply the beneficiary of playing in a year without competition. There was no Frazier to their Ali, no Lakers to their Celtics, no Colts to our Patriots.

Strength of Schedule

Dolphins - The'72 Dolphins did not play a division champion until they reached the playoffs. Nor did they face a playoff team until the playoffs started. Miami only played two teams with winning records, Kansas City in the opener and the New York Giants in Week 13. Credit the Dolphins for winning both those games on the road, but the fact remains those two "winning teams" were both a mere 8- 6.

-The combined records of the teams they played was 70-122-4, a winning percentage of .367.

-Nine of their 14 victims were 5-9 or worse.

Patriots - Like all other division winning teams in the last 5-8 years or so, the NFL forces division winners to play each other every year, making the row allot tougher to hoe. If the Patriots do manage to go undefeated they will have done so with a first place schedule and have beaten in my mind (the Colts) one of the other best teams in NFL history and the Patriots and Colts are one of the top rivalries in NFL history.

See section under Best DVOA Ever Watch
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/2007/11/06/ramblings/dvoa-ratings/5715/

The Patriots offense this year is also possibly the best ever: http://troyaikman.wordpress.com/category/aikman-efficiency-ratings/

The scoring differential would be the best in the Superbowl era.

The 86 Bears won by an average of 17.9 points a game, the 1984 Niners by 16.0. The Patriots are currently at 21.7 PPG

Shula and the Dolphins should have fun and be proud of what they accomplished, but they should also keep there traps shut as they look on in awe at the Patriots.

The 1972 Dolphins DO have an asterisk.

They played the easiest schedule in the history of football.

ZERO games against playoff teams
ZERO games against teams with a better record than 8-6
TWO games against teams with winning records.

The 9-0 Patriots have accomplished something substantially more impressive than the 14-0 1972 Dolphins.

The 1972 Dolphins weren't even as good as the 1973 Dolphins.

The '72 Dolphins should have an * because they were a bunch of femmebots playing a pansy schedule.

I think Shula's a horses *

after the next team goes undefeated in the present (maybe this years pats) they will be the only team considered to have an undefeated season...

no one will remember the 72 fins, no one will care for them...the new team which would have done it much more fairly would be only considered the only nfl team to go undefeated in many eyes

They didn't play their first division winner until the third round of the playoffs. I didn't keep a running tally, week to week, for division leaders I only looked at who won divisions.

We've played as many division leaders (2) as they played division winners all the way through the Superbowl and we'll have played two more (if today's standings stand up) before the playoffs even start.

one reason for an * coould be

UPDATE: A reader points out that the Dolphins were nailed by the league for tampering in connection with the hiring of Shula to be their head coach in 1970. The penalty was a first-round draft pick. So if the head coach of the team that went 17-0 two years later was hired through improper means, shouldn't the team's accomplishments with said coach carry an asterisk, too?

Anytime i write that team's name, it shall now be the: 1972 undefeated* Dolphins

When Shula got hired in 1970 there were some inproprities that resulted in the loss of a first round draft pick, thus every they did afterward should have an asterisk after it.

I have always respected Shula, but his recent tirade might be dementia induced.

Yah. And the uniqueness of his brand is threatened, his brand being "that undefeated guy."

Pure trademark protection, except, newsflash, it's not a trademark. It's a sports almanac fact you've treated as a meal ticket (and diet meal ticket) for so long, you can't tell when it's being eclipsed.

If and when, I think BB should send him a case of champagne.

What is interesting if in the future...Goodell..Shula dn some of the big mouths wish to.have to appear with the Patriots?? Can you imagine how uncomfortable that will be?? Thinking Goodell....I'd love to see someone knock him on his backside..or totally ignore him...OR?? you know when you are Commish u are commish of ALL the teams..not just the whiny ones..I think he stepped far over the line with all he did...karma is ready to hit him...maybe he better do something about it....
For SHula and the many big mouths in that club?? your time is LONG gome.. and MAY become quite irrelevent...payback is a *****...

I'm all for placing an asterisk after both of Miami's SB wins because they "cheated"

I'm sure. if we dug deep enough, we could find numerous other examples of SB winners cheating their way to their title and deserving of an asterisk placed after it.

I'm sure Goodell would love for this to happen to his league.
