Seau recorded eight tackles during the contest, but according to the newspaper it was the third-and-11 play in the fourth quarter that lead to the sack which gave him the honor. On the play Seau ran stride for stride with tight end Robert Royal and took away a big play from Buffalo. "They were really trying to hit the tight end down the middle and Junior had him 35 yards down the field," coach Bill Belichick told reporters yesterday. "It was a really good play by Junior that set up the rest of the play."

McDaniels replaces former offensive coordinator Charlie Weis who left after the 2004 season to become coach at Notre Dame, and no one took his place during this season. McDaniels and coach Bill Belichick split most of the play-calling duties in the 2005 campaign, and apparently Belichick liked what he saw from the young coach. McDaniels joined the Patriots in 2001 as an assistant in the scouting department and was a member of the defensive coaching staff for three seasons before becoming quarterbacks coach in 2004.

ESPN.com reported on Tuesday that Patriots wide receiver Troy Brown failed to reach a new contract agreement with the team and will become a free agent. His contract reportedly had an option bonus of $2.5 million due Tuesday along with a $2.5 million base salary. This will end Brown's remarkable 12-year career in New England.

The Boston Herald reported on Tuesday that Patriots free agent wide receiver David Patten is headed to the open market. "He's definitely going to see what's out there," Patten's agent, Mark Lepselter told the newspaper. "We spoke to the Patriots in generalities about (a new contract) and we're going to see what other opportunities are out there. We'd definitely welcome the opportunity to come back to New England, but you play your whole life for one chance at free agency, and this is it for David. So we'll see."


Joe Andruzzi | Wants Deal Done

The Boston Herald reported on Tuesday that unrestricted free agent Joe Andruzzi's priority is to get a deal done with the Pats and according to the newspaper his agent, Joe Linta, is negotiating with the team. "There's undoubtedly a hometown discount at work here," Linta told the newspaper. "They brought him in (as a street free agent in 2000) and gave him a chance, and he was huge for them in return. There's a mutual admiration there, so it's just a matter of finding what's fair."

The Associated Press reported on Monday that the New England Patriots released veteran linebacker Roman Phifer. Phifer, 36, was signed by the team as a free agent in 2001 and played in 59 games in his four seasons with the Patriots, helping the team win three Super Bowls. During his time in New England Phifer recorded 385 tackles, and led the team in tackles in 2002 with 109, despite missing two games due to injury. Phifer's career totals include 1,297 tackles, 29 sacks, 11 interceptions, 18 forced fumbles and eight fumble recoveries.


Tedy Bruschi | Hit Slowed McNabb

The Philadelphia Enquirer reported on Monday that it was a hit by linebacker Tedy Bruschi that left quarterback Donovan McNabb gasping for air at a time when the Eagles were attempting to go into their hurry-up offense during their Super Bowl XXXIX loss to the New England Patriots. Two sources told the newspaper that McNabb said he was hit in the back by Bruschi as he fell forward during a broken play on which he unexpectedly received the snap from center Hank Fraley. The Enquirer also reported that after completing a first down pass to Freddie Mitchell, he motioned for his teammates to quickly get up to the line of scrimmage. But as he was calling the play at the line, he reportedly began to gasp and had to motion his teammates back to the huddle, where video of the game clearly shows him violently coughing.

Adam Vinatieri | Agent Has Added Pressure

There has been little news since the team placed the franchise tag on Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri, but there will now be some added pressure on Vinatieri's agent, Neil Cornrich. The Providence Journal reported on Sunday that Cornrich, who represents kicker Adam Vinatieri, offensive lineman Stephen Neal and who sometimes is an adviser to Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, is reportedly staring at a possible year's suspension. According to the newspaper the NFL players association recommended that Cornrich be suspended beginning April 5 after he served as an expert witness for Ford Motor Co. in a lawsuit brought by the estate of deceased Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Thomas, who died in an SUV rollover. The NFLPA reportedly claims that Cornrich used proprietary information from the NFLPA in his testimony.


Richard Seymour | Would Like A New Deal

According to the newspaper the deal will be in the 5-6-year range and will not be worth "Peyton Manning money." The Colts quarterback signed a multiyear deal last spring averaging over $14 million a year with a $34.5 million signing bonus.


Ty Law | Requested His Release

The Boston Herald reported on Saturday that New England Patriots cornerback Ty Law was the one who reportedly requested his release after the Pats came in with a low offer on a restructured contract. According to the newspaper Law said he leaves with no hard feelings. "We had our differences, but we won football games together," Law said during a radio interview in Kansas City. "So there are no hard feelings either way. It was a gentleman's agreement - where I move forward and they move forward. And I really appreciate coach Belichick releasing me early enough so I can go out there and take advantage of the opportunities (in free agency)." The team had released the veteran cornerback last week.
