| The Patriots are 8-5 heading into the final three games. | ESPN.com is reporting that the Patriots intend to use the franchise tag on backup quarterback Matt Cassel. This would mean that Cassel would make the average of the top five quarterbacks in the NFL in 2009 (about $14 million), and any team which decides to sign Cassel would have to surrender two first round picks to the Patriots. The Patriots could then trade Cassel if Tom Brady does return for 2009, or play Cassel if Brady is not ready to go. |
