2023 DL Discussion

Who is taking his spot?
Yeah… I agree he does not have the same impact as he did when he was younger but that doesn’t mean he should be given the boot yet…especially with limited options on the line. IMO White should be thrown into the fire…possibly starting with Guy coming off the bench. We still need Guy.

Mitchell and Roberts are the wild cards. Y2 for both of them so one, or both, might emerge.

To me Mitchell is so far off the radar I don’t even remember or seen him play. Roberts might stick (although he’s a stones throw from unemployment as well).

They are both late round and UDFA players but very athletic. If they are going to contribute it will start in Y2 which is this year. Fingers crossed. Both were on the initial 53 man roster last August so the Pats definitely valued them at that point.

ST Only
Schooler
Slater
Board
Davis
Mitchell

I would think 4 of these guys. Maybe all 5 can make the roster.
Speed could replace one of these STO's, or be a 6th. IMO, he has almost no chance to secure a spot as a position player, but he was a ST standout in college.

And yes, ANYTHING can happen. Unfortunately for those drafted in the 6th and 7th rounds, and as UDFA's, the odds are long against them making the roster other than as a STer. I believe that even 5th rounders often don't make the patriot squad. Of course, Belichick is better than anyone in finding contributors from the late rounds and among the undrafted.

Anything can happen. The odds are long against them being contributors. However, don't me wrong. I think that Mitchell is a favprite make the team. For Belichick, a large portion of the team needs to nothing but special teams if they are good enough in ST roles. This includes the 3 specialists and another 4-7 STO players.

It is a bonus when these ST starters can also contribute as a position player as Bolden did. We missed him when he was gone, and when his replacement was injured.

They both made the 53 in 2022. Why don't you think they will both make the 53 in 2023?

I'm pretty stoked about the DL this season, especially with the addition of White and and the coming out season by Wise. The key to any really good DL is numbers, and the Pats are starting to have a DL roster that can come after you in waves. I actually wanted a DT like Kancey or Mazie Smith if they fell to the 2nd to pair with Barmore. Inside pressure is the best deterrent to an NFL passing attack there is.

But instead we took a 285lb DE. But who knows. This is a kid who has played the DL only a few years and has a LOT of upside as I see it. Explosive and powerful are the terms most used in describing him. (btw anyone have a 40 time on him) He IS Detrich Wise only bigger and more athletic. I can easily see bim being used inside on passing downs as well as on the edge.

As for the rest of DL, I really like it. Godcheax has been under rated a bit by Pats fans. I thought he did a very nice job last season. Eukele was a big surprise for me. He showed a consistent ability to get into the backfield. Guy is the guy who seems like he is getting phased out that this point of his career. He was a GREAT FA pick up by Bill who has produced at a high level and for a couple of years the Pats best DLman. But at this point he's being bypassed and that's a good thing. But currently I look at him as quality, experienced depth who is playing his last season as a Patriot

Judon Uche, Wise and Jennings are a good group coming off the edge. With both Judon and Uche with double digit sack (wise 7.5) Not to mention White as a power DE like Wise. Inside you have God, Davis, Barmore, Euk, as a start of decent DT/N group. Now with White and Wise, the Pats actually have two 3-4 DE's, which is good when you want to disguise how you are coming at the QB and what your coverage is.

at least this is how I see very early on

They both made the 53 in 2022. Why don't you think they will both make the 53 in 2023?
MITCHELL
I have Mitchell making the roster as STER. I don't expect positional reps, although that could happen.

ROBERTS
We added White.
DE: WISE, WHITE. MITCHELL
DT: BARMORE, EKUALE
NT: GODHAUX, GUY, DAVIS

Are you projecting a retirement of Guy? I'm not even sure that we carry 8.

White may end up being our best pick for the simple fact he can spell Wise. Wise plays more snaps than anybody and doesn't even come close to double digit sacks. I personally want Wise gone but he seems like a lock.

With the talk of Guy's age, we seem a little short at dt imo. Ekuale and Davis are decent but not quite as good as I would like.

I'd love to see someone take his spot, but I dont see anyone with his size and strength
If guy were available as a free agent for $3M a year for a 1 year contract, Belichick would probably sign him.

:) Mitchell played move ST reps than anyone but Slater, Schooler and Tavai (68% of the ST reps).

Mitchell had 5 reps as a defensive player (maybe on kneeldowns).

You said it " a healthy barmore" the only thing that held him back from that next step is injury.. the guys everything you want in an interior lineman.. he was a force his rookie season. Wise is a guy you root for.. worked his way into a starter and is a complete DL. It would be so beneficial for the team especially with a 17 game season to have a nice rotation of guys to keep heat on QBs.

Davis had a serious concussion problem in 2020. Missed several games, came back, then went out again. Puts a perpetual question mark on his durability.
We have a deep front 7.. we need a nice rotation of guys up front to allow guys rest, and durability for the rigors of a 17 game season. Gonzalez in the secondary will likely be locking up teams #1s so that will allow our dogs up front to keep heat consistently on QBs. The only thing that concerns me is the running QBs we have to face.

Let's hope Perkins turns into Uche. And Roberts turns into Guy. Add K White and Mitchell, and Barmore does not need to be All Pro.
Hope Perk turns into Uche how about hoping Perk turns into a decent rotational guy that would suffice. Based on last year he's a PS guy now.

Unfortunately, I think we still may need Guy on the run downs. Never been a Davis fan.
Judon the Alpha
Everybody else has possible upside but inconsistent.
There is potential for a real good pass rush.
Uche flashes
Barmore good inside pressure
Ekuale a playmaker inside
White ?
Roberts also showed inside pressure. Needs to improve rest of his game to get on the field. I have hopes for him.
Wise never my favorite but did play decent last year.
Mitchell, Jennings, Perkins ???
But there is a lot of potential pass rush and that is what we will need.

Ekuale is a JAG. If Roberts can't beat out Ekuale then he is a JAG too.
