TBF, the problem is that Belichick apparently has an idiosyncratic notion of drafting "for value," and apparently decided that the key value for 2022 was pure speed above all else.

As I've said before, they had the certainty that Maye was available and would "only" cost #3.
If they trade down, there are no guarantees. And waiting a year or two could put them where the Vikings ended up this year.
While I don't completely disagree, the way I see it is Maye was a good bet to take, versus waiting a year (or two) and then having to gamble multiple firsts.
