Pats part ways with Director of Scouting Projects Marshall Oium

I thought quite a few teams do this post draft but still feels like an odd move. Guess they just wanted a new perspective?

I don’t know….Director of SCOUTING PROJECTS just sounds like the kind of title that is a no-show job given to someone who did good work once but just needs a transition time to his next job or retirement.

I also don’t ever recall hearing the name Marshall Oium before. Not in BB or mayonnaise days.
Let alone like he was in charge of anything significant.

Not sure this should even be a blip on a fans radar.

I updated the title because there’s no evidence he was fired. Often these contracts expire after the draft for front office positions. This may be as simple as choosing not to renew his contract which is not the same as firing him. Firing him implies something wrong was done. “Part ways” make me think it’s simply just letting his deal run out.

Either way… has anyone even heard of this guy before today anyway? Does anyone think this matters at all?

I am not surprised that the Pats would part ways with Oium. Oium was a Belichick guy who was here before Vrabel and Cowden and even Wolf. They probably didn't want to fire him and waited out his contract as Ross said. Now they will replace him with someone who is either Wolf's guy or Cowden's guy or both.

They want people in high positions who subscribe to the scouting philosophies of the current regime. Oium might not have been adverse to how Wolf changed the scouting department, but he also isn't all that well versed either.

Nah! When you factor he was not a Wolf hire (although Wolf did promote him two years ago), you can see that he might eventually move on. Probably just a bad fit for Wolf's new scouting system.

Anyone? Well, Sam (or whatever he's calling himself this week) should be along shortly to proclaim how this is a clear indicator the Front Office doesn't know what it's doing and the Pats will be a dumpster fire this season

Marshall Oium was the 57th person that had a bio in the Pats media guide, somewhere betwwen two guys both named Joe McDonald and a random Data Engineer.

Super important part of the team, quite obviously.

...... I DOUBLE DOWN on my initial opinion (in BOLD above).

Oium, the team’s Director of Scouting Projects, will not be back with the team. Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston was first to report on the Patriots parting ways with Oium. A further post on X indicated that Oium was fired. These types of moves in the scouting department usually occur once the draft is completed.

A former quarterback at the University of Chicago, Oium came to New England as a pro scout in 2018. He spent his initial five seasons with the team in that position before being promoted to assistant director of scouting in 2023. The following year, under the club’s new regime, he was named director of football strategy. Last year, he moved into his most recent role.
Look for this position to be filled by an internal promotion." [ OR NOT.... do you really NEED to re-fill a No-Show Job? ] His career tracks with path of....
A. did OK as a Scout
B. Tried him out as deputy scounting director (Blue)
C. Couldnt hack it, so they moved him to a fancy title with little work (Orange Job) to see if he can figure out how to be value-added.
D. Didnt figure that out either. Gave him a year to get his feet on the ground before he is unemployed (RED Job)

Even worse we could have had all-pro CB Cooper Dejean with that pick instead of Polk.
