Ian's Daily Blog - The Patriots watched 13 defensive players come off the board, along with trading down twice before Bill Belichick finally grabbed New England’s first pick of 2010, with the team taking cornerback Devin McCourty with the 27th overall selection.McCourty is a 5’11” 193-pounds out of Rutgers who during his college career definitely impressed.* According to CBS [...]

I don't think I'm alone wondering how we can pass on Dez Bryant or pick a "gunner" in the first round instead of filling an actual need like OLB. This offseason has been as frustrating as I've seen in a long time.

Inderstand passing on Bryant if they thought he was another Chad Jackson, but a cornerback????

We now have 6 of them. Maybe one can play defensive end of outside linebacker. Hell, just put Wilfork and 10 DBs on the field.

Dont forget that Marshall and Holmes are in the division now. Solid Corners are a must and i think this is a Solid Pick.

Solid?
You mean like the last 2 clowns that BillBob has drafted?

What a friggen joke. I literally laughed out loud when I heard the pick. Why does BB have to go off the board every friggen time ? One pro bowl player picked in the last 5 years. Good job Bill ! It would have made more sense picking up the extra 3 & 4 if we had grabbed Kindle or Hughes to address our putrid pass rush. It's gonna be fun watching mccourty get burned every week because of the lack of a rush, and then watching our extra 3rd and 4th round picks playing for the jets after we cut them. Sure, go off the board and pick the 5th-9th rated CB. Sure, waste a first round pick on a special teams gunner. What a joke.

Psssst, Bill, it ain't against the law to pick a good player, in fact, I may be wrong, but I thnk that's the idea ! Dez Bryant would have been a great pick, due to Moss leaving after this year and Welker probably missing the first 6 games. Kindle, the perfect pick after trading down twice. You koolaid drnkers don't think Mccourty would have been there in the second round ? Bill, you're a terrible drafter, (the proof is there) and here's a dollar to buy a clue. What a joke lol.

Joke is on us, he's supposedly there to make the team BETTER.

Pick Analysis: After wheeling and dealing down the draft board, the Patriots pick up the versatile Devin McCourty. The former Rutgers standout gives the team a dynamic cover man and special teams player. Although he won't be counted on to step right in as a starter, McCourty should excel as a sub-defender/special teamer in his rookie season. The Patriots are routinely chastised for their willingness to trade away picks, but it's hard to dispute their ability to find gems at the right value.

a gem!!

You've got to be kidding me. Bill trades down twice, Odreck and Hughes were still on the board and Bill picks a special teams player.
Unreal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This team needs a GM.

I can picture McCourty sitting down at his PC and looking for message boards to read the fan reactions about him coming to New England...I'm sure he'll be thrilled if/when he finds out about this place....

You guys might want to checked the archive draft threads and read your reactions to some of the other guys taken who turned out pretty well. Have a little faith....it's one round, one guy - who working under guy who knows defense pretty well can probably make him a pretty good player in this league....

Agreed, just pitiful. Bryant, Kindle and Hughes were there for the Pats, and we pick the 5th-9th best CB, lol hilarious ! If Bill is trying to make the Pats a middle of the pack team, he's doing a great job, if he's trying to win a Super Bowl, time to take the grocery shopping away from him and get a REAL GM. He's living on his past laurels, the NFL has passed him by. In Bill we trust my ass. You Bozos who support this really think we are going to actually use all of these excess picks the next few days ? I bet Bill trades 2 of those 2nd round picks for a 2011 2nd and a 2010 3rd and 4th. And then drafts a punter. Sorry, Bill has no clue how this draft thing works anymore. I still remember Bethel "f$cking" Johnson over Anquan Boldin in 2003. and so many other bonehead picks since. Oh well, we have the memories.

half these "fans" are schizo Ian...all season all they did was clog the board with Wilhite hate posts on the gameday thread and post thousands of "they better draft a good corner!!!" takes and now that the Pats have done just that, they're crying about it.

This young man at best is a nickle back this year, given that we already have Butler and Bodden. A WR (Bryant), OLB, or DE would bring more bang for the buck.

It's real simple Ian. This 1st round pick does NOT address ANY of the Patriots glaring needs. NONE OF THEM. ZERO!! NADA!!! ZILCH!!!
Hell I'd have been happier if they had chosen Dez Bryant and I wanted the Pats to draft defense. At least Bryant would be an impact player.
This is a really bad pick for the 1st round when you look at the players they left on the board. A bad pick!

sure, so we pick the corner rated no higher than 5th best CB ? Most hav him as the 9th best CB. Pick a CB, that's fine, but pick a highly rated one. Just because we made him the second CB picked, doesn't mean he was the second best. It's like saying we need an OT and we pick the 9th rated one, over OTs rated 2-8, just doesn't make sense. I'd say in bill I trust, but his drafting has been terrible the last few years, while other teams draft superstars he passes up.

No, most do not have him 9th.

Haden, Wilson, McCourty, Jackson, in some order were the top 4 unless you also count Earl Thomas.

This thread absolutely blows, my goodness.

We should now have three good CB and we got a stud ST player on top of that. And we got a #3 for tomorrow. Oh, yeah, there's plenty of pass rushers left.

where are you getting this 9th best corner idiocy???

all night on NFL dot com and ESPN he has been one of the top four and where he was picked only Hughes was left, who's stock at the start of the season was 14th best and whose stock was plummetting pre draft due to poor workouts and a subpar last couple of games in 2009.
