Malcolm Butler as CB1 over Gilmore

The organization should acknowledge Gilmore isn't a CB1 and fix this.

- The Jets game reminded everyone of how Butler remains one of the most clutch big-play CB's in the league. The defense (especially McCourty) plays better with Butler as CB1.

- Butler already made one pro bowl and narrowly missed on a second pro bowl.

- Gilmore has some of the worst football / scheme awareness I've seen as a CB1. You can't rely on a corner who completely blows assignments or adjustments, it exposes your safeties.

- Gilmore may arguably have superior physical gifts but in terms of awareness, intelligence, performing through adversity and delivering big plays, Malcolm Butler is a much better fit at CB1. This reminds me right now of a cornerback version scenario of Drew Henson v Brady at Michigan.

IMO up to yesterday Butler was having a very unspectacular year... he seemed consistently out of place and spent a lot of times chasing players down the field..

Thought Gilmore played much better against the Buccaneers... in a game where he was concussed.

Yesterday the NEP gave up a ton of passing yards to the McCown led NY Jets.. yes the NY Jets.

How would you fix this?? How can the Patriots fix this??

What difference does it make? Belichick doesn’t assign roles numerically he assigns them by opponent, fit, and scheme. And if you mean they should give him 17 million a season it isn’t happening. I really like Butler but unfortunately for him his limitations against big receivers will keep him from getting “No. 1” money. He is still going to make some serious $$$ but it’s more likely to be 4/45/20 than it is 5/65/40. Much like Welker his size and age will bring his value down, although unlike Welker they aren’t likely to Franchise him.

More pressure and better communication in the secondary. And they are going to need it by next Sunday.

Butler is gone after this year. Get to grips with it.

The moment he rejected the contract extension he signed his ticket out of New England.

Who cares about passing yards? As long as they don't equal to points... our defense held them to 7 in the first quarter, 7 in the second quarter and only 3 in the enitre second half and thats without Gilmore and Rowe impressive imo

I would of agreed with this in the past but combine his uneven year his age his size and his penchant for being a victim of why don't the Patriots want him?
I think he comes back cheaper for what he originally turned down.

You mean 10 in the second half we got bailed out by a questionable rule

Giving up 24 points to the jets is embarrassing

So Gilmore is coming off a game where he locks down star NFL mike evans and you make a post like this?

Outside of the INT, the jets picked on Malcolm butler he entire first half. Butler even got beat for a long TD by below average Robbie Anderson

Honestly, I hesitate to post anything Defense related on here because there are like two or three Homers who call everything a Hot Take or blah blah blah but the truth is...

Without that TD reversal, this defense effectively would have given the JETS not only a 300 yard game, but 24 points, with six games in already, it doesn't matter who's CB1 this D is absolutely terrible and I'm starting to doubt the ship will be set straight this year.

I'm not even going to touch the Gilmore issue, some people on here lose their ever loving minds whenever Gilmore is called out for what he is.

Final score 24-17

If you wanna get technical the final really should of been 31-17 if PI gets called when Gronk was smothered at the 1yrd line which would of put us at first and goal at the 1

Come on Jets completed a pass to Jenkins where instead of it being a jets TD we ended up with the ball! Lucky as you get

That took points away from the jets right there

That touchdown right there gave the jets 21 points plus they added 3 later

I don't want to bs about points

Patriots give up a league worst 27 points per game

Butler made a play to knock the ball out of ASJ's grasp. That's credit to the defense. It's not like they dropped a surefire TD in the endzone like last week.

Next you'll tell me Butler got lucky Seattle didn't run the ball in 2014. The defense can only respond to what the offense plays. Butler knocked the ball out and there was no TD from ASJ.

How can that be when the Defense made a play. ASJ didn't trip. The ball was knocked out by Butler.

I’m not sure what this is supposed to accomplish. Butler is going to start at one corner spot, and Gilmore is going to start at the other. This is like arguing whether Solder or Cannon deserves to be called the “#1” offensive tackle.

Ah yes knock the defense for something that didn't happen because they forced the turnover that reversed said TD

For what he is? Last time we saw him he held Mike Evans to 5 catches for 47 yards.

I think he comes back cheaper for what he originally turned down.

His size and age are partly the reason why the team is not giving him a bigger contract. He needs to work harder and more focused than others to play at that level due to physical limitations. Which he has done so far no question but how long can he overcompensate like that ? He will be 28 next March and most probably will look for CB1 money with heavy guarantees for at least 2-3 years.

I dont know if I agree but I can see the reasoning.

What he is is a very good to elite man coverage CB. He has had problems in zone schemes but so did Revis a few years ago. Gilmore has blown some coverages but he also gets blamed for **** he had nothing to do with.

Imo, the issues in the secondary are more rooted to the front seven than communication in the Secondary. Branch being out of shape, Hightower missing games, Ninko retiring, VV Ir'd etc..etc.... They couldn't stop the run effectively, they couldn't cover speedy RB's coming out of the backfield and had problems with mobile QB's. They tried to mask the front 7 issues by moving McCourty, Chung etc.. around in the Secondary which has caused comm issues. Star LB's. 3-3 fronts. Yeah.

Anyway they got Hightower back. Gilmore and Rowe will be back. Hopefully either VV can return or Branch gets back to his 2016 self or both. When those things happen this defense will be fine. It's just been a very weird season.

49 yards but who's counting? Evans is TB's no. 1 receiver. If Gilmore sucks so much why did he basically take Evans out of the game? Winston had a very tight window with Evans beyond 5-7 years from scrimmage.
