Stafford traded to Rams

You do if it comes with two first rd picks, remember the picks are in the 2022 and 2023 draft. The Rams are in a win now mode, because after that they are going to have to pay for all those bloated salaries they have on the books right now (and the lack of draft picks for cheap talent).

Meanwhile the Lions can play Goff for the next two years, if he sucks, that just makes their own picks higher, but you figure they have five first round picks in the next three drafts (including the 7th pick this year) that they now don't have to use on a QB, and money says they trade that pick for another 2022 first rd pick to whoever wants to move up to take Mac Jones or Trey Lance.

Goff is not Brock Osweilder, he can play, maybe not a superstar, but maybe with a solid running game, he can be servicable.

I think this a great move by Detroit and one that will take a long time to pay out, but it could end up a Hershel Walker type haul for the Lions.
Those two 1s will most likely be in the mid-20s as the Rams are going to win games. Having Goff's contract and his mediocre to poor play is going to be an anvil on Detroit's back and remember Dan Campbell is coaching him.

You don't reset by taking on a mammoth contract for a Qb you don't want.

What are you talking about? They literally bought two first round picks and a third.

Least to mention a top 15 qb with lots of upside.

Am I in wonderland? What you people smoking.

Again, and I've sent this pop up more than once. The nfl isn't the damn nba. EVEN if the rams picks are in the mid to late 20s those are exceptionally valuable. You can get a franchise cornerstone anywhere in the first.

But I don't believe it's a gurantee they're that low. They are In a tough division and just last year flamed out once already.

Great. ****ing. Trade. For. The. Lions.

Good luck...

The biggest loser in this is the niners. They now have probably worst QB in that division which all of a sudden is more of a bloodbath.

And their success hinges on Jimmy G playing a full season (something he has done once in 4 years there)

Stafford
Woods
Kupp
Jefferson
Higbee
Akers
+
weak OL

Am I suppose to be impressed with this offense?

Patsfans don’t care about a weak OL. Look at those NAMES at wr ! Woooooooooooooooo ! They’d say YES TO ALL, because awesome WR play > championships ! Madden + Fantasy football is EVERYTHING here !

Without a doubt. Caserio is probably dancing right now. He'd better get the biggest haul we've seen in a long time or he's going to look foolish.

Maybe SF will take a second and another pick for Jimmy G to throw into a massive offer to Houston.

I don't see the Pats getting much better than Jimmy at this point in the market

Nope, if Jimmy stays in San Fran we are looking at cam newton, mariota or Brissett.

Problem is, niners may be in a situation where they may be stuck with Jimmy because there are no better options

Doesn't Jimmy G's big contract vest this spring? In other words, they may have to move on to him because keeping him becomes a multiyear commitment.

Hmm didn't know that's the case. So they may still. But unless they have a better option I don't see them moving on.

But if his contract is fully vested and Jimmy G gets injured again or they underperform. Lynch and shanahan are going to be on the chopping block. Because their window is closing fast

I understand the cap issues, but Stafford has sucked in the playoffs (3 one and dones, INTs, Lost Fumbles, etc), and he had Megatron for 2 of them. Maybe this works out for both franchises, but then again, I guess I don't give a flying Elvis. It's not like I had thought we should get Watson or Stafford for how much they were going to cost, anyway. SB winners have overwhelmingly had a QB who was developed in-house (except 4 in the last 30 years - maybe 5 if you count Favre), and BB has been drafting one every 2-3 years just in case. So far, it seems like he missed on the last one (Stid), but we'll see if the story's all written up on that one.

Stafford is a little better on tape but Goff is a good QB and younger and won playoff games, he needs weapons and a very good OC though. Anyway I think Detroit won this trade by a lot.

They likely might add a wideout. Idk their cap but they will lose some players offensively.

His soon to be former head coach, one of best offensive minds in the league, would apparently beg to differ. Above all else, with this trade McVay is saying “We have no chance to win a SB with Jared. Zero chance. Zip. Zilch.”

So....who could the Pats target on the Rams, to take advantage of their salary cap issues. They will probably extend Stafford in order to lower his salary cap hit but Goff will still cost them $22 mill next year in dead money.

Woods may become available, if they feel that Jefferson can fill his role. They only get significant cap savings if they trade him, however, as noted above. If they just cut him, his cap number doesn’t change (even with a post-June 1 designation) plus there would be a big dead cap hit. In 2022 and beyond, however, he can be cut with almost no dead money left behind. Still only 28, I’d ask about him if I were Bill. I wouldn’t pay a premium but would take on his salary if the Rams gave a good deal as a salary dump. Kupp would be ideal for the Pats but seems very unlikely that they would deal him.

On defense, Brockers may become available (cut with post June 1 designation or trade would save the Rams $6-6.5 million next year). They still would have Donald and Sebastian Joseph-Day in the DL. If they resigned Guy and picked up Brockers, their DL would look much better for 2021. If he isn’t a fit, they can cut him and his dead cap hit in 2022 would only be $1.8 million, with $9 million in savings. On the other hand, he is already 30 and the Pats need to get younger.

I don’t mean to pick on you all the time here but you’ve been very vocal in wanting Jimmy back in other threads and this post is exactly why I don’t lol

I think the biggest loser of this trade are the Colts

I'll take Aaron Donald for the #15 straight up. The Rams could use some first rounders...

Really though - I'd be asking about Kupp. That's $10m saved and they are almost $35m over the cap...

anyone else think the rams should have tried this exact offer except add another first rounder to just get Watson instead of Stafford? I don’t know if Houston would have accepted but it’s obvious the rams don’t care about first round picks
According to Florio you can’t trade picks more than 3 years out, the Rams don’t have one this year so they can only offer 2 max. Houston will get more than that

Good luck...

Missing from this list is ... Jared Goff, whose $22.2m dead cap charge still sits at #3 on the team lol. That puts you at $132.1m for your top 7 cap charges, when the cap is currently projected to only be $176m total.
