You gotta love Bill:
Belichick said:
Q: Is a defensive back on the outside virtually helpless on an underthrown ball when a receiver stops short and starts running back? What’s he supposed to do?
BB: Turn and look for the ball.
Q: If you’re running top speed and stop.
BB: Well, the receiver you’re covering slows down, right?
Q: If he slows down.
BB: Why is he slowing down?
Q: For the ball.
BB: Turn and look for the ball.
Q: If you’re running stride for stride with someone right on them.
BB: When the guy slows down –
Q: What if there is no slow down?
BB: Then he’s not coming back for the ball.

Too funny. Thanks for the info. Always like to see who was asking these questions.

Funny - anyone know who asked the question? Merely curious. It doesn't have the annoying, awkward question vibe that a Breer -BB typical dialogue would have, but more of the quirky banter that Curran & BB sometime get into.

Just watched the press conference. It was Tom E. Curran asking. You can go here and see it. Starts around the 20:00 mark.

Very funny! I love Belichick! :D

After watching the video, he's all serious and it's not funny at all. But it looks great in text! :D

I love that the media are making everyone aware of the crap jump ball Joe pulls finally.

These little exchanges BB has seem to always be Curran too! (The Golf shoes exchange was probably the best this year).

BB: "If you turn around and look for it and contact the receiver, then it’s not a foul. If you keep running into him and you contact the receiver, then it’s a foul."

Remember not long ago Pats DB's kept running into receivers without turning around and getting penalized? Fans were screaming "Look at the ball! Why don't they turn around and look at the ball to avoid the penalty?" BB shook off the fans concerns and I clearly remember one player said they were coached to not turn around. Well I guess the fans were right because BB changed his tune according to this article.

I never said that about avoiding penalties. I said it so they could simply knock a pass away or intercept it. And BB didn't shake anything off; he said, along with other DBs, that they're taught to look for the receiver's hands, as BB mentioned again in this presser, and get theirs in there to try and cause a breakup. It was infuriating to watch.

In the current league, you have to be able to adapt your techniques you coach to the new ref calls EACH YEAR. We've always known BB learns, morphs, adapts. Doubt he listened to the 'fans' though.

I'm sure he listens to fans before he decides they are ignorable. :)

Of course the advantage is always to the offense. Receivers could intentionally slow down as if to go for an underthrown ball, teh defender turns his head, and then boom the receiver could go off again in a full sprint (leaving the defender in the dust).

Curran is brainless. How that nitwit landed that gig is amazing to me.

Reminds me of a similar conversation I had with little robertweathers many moons ago....

Q: What happens if I stick my hand in the freezer?
robertweathers: It gets cold
Q: What if I keep my hand in the freezer for a really long time?
robertweathers:: It freezes
Q: What if I open the freezer but I keep my hand outside?
robertweathers: It stays warm

Repeat the same Q&A for 5 more minutes.

That's how I remember it too. Infuriating. The ball would hit a db in the back while he's tackling the receiver. Saw mccourty do it a few times. I think having safety help gives them more freedom to look for the ball.

No, the defensive backs sucked.

He changed the defensive backs so they didn't have to run full speed to catch up with the receiver because they could cover.

There is no technique that allows you to get beaten like a drum, then try to stop on a dime while running full speed. The technique would be, be a better farkin CB, so you are in control of your body enough that if the throw is short, you turn around and intercept it.

There is no technique that saves you when you're out of control due to blowing the coverage.

Also, McCourty is now a safety. Darrel Revis doesn't need to know a special "technique" because he is in position, turns around, and intercepts it. His technique is, be a good CB so you don't have to play catch up and end up out of control.

Don't get me wrong, I am in favor of the coaching staff teaching every player Revis' technique, which is to be a great cornerback and don't get beat so badly in the first place, that you have to run full speed to look like you're making the play, which you're not, because you're out of control.

Have Wilfork teach the CBs the technique, which is to be aware and in control, see the receiver, turn around, catch it and run towards the end zone.

This techniques bullcrap just fries me. If you're in position and in control, the technique is easy, a baby could figure it out. If you're out of breath with your arms flailing, there's no technique in the world that's going to save you. If you could stop from a full run, completely change your momentum, pirouette in mid air and catch the ball, you wouldn't have been in the vulnerable position in the first place, you'd be Darrell Revis, who doesn't have to make wild moves because he knows how to play CB and so, doesn't put himself in that position.
