I feel like the `mercenary` narrative is a lot of hype. I think Revis wanted to be paid like a top NFL player, which he was and is, and the ego of Woody Johnson became a point of conflict for both parties. The Jets suck. If I was going to stay and suffer with them, I would want to be paid too.
I think him coming to New England for what is essentially a 1 year, 12M mutual try out period, with him being protected from the franchise tag in case he hates it, is a possible indicator that he means what he says when he says he's here because he wants to win. If he was the mercenary NY haters claim, he would of just gone to Oakland for 16M+ a year, and I'm sure they would of given it to him. They have lots of money and 3 good quarterbacks in their division.
So let's say good things happen this year, he likes Kraft, he likes playing with Belichick, he likes playing with guys like Tom, and he restructures to try to solidify himself as a part of something... historic.
A 4 year, 40-45M contract or whatever, and he's going to be a Patriot for the duration of his prime, if not one for the rest of his career.
I remember Revis was the guy for awhile firing up the Jets Ray Lewis style (only more coherently) before kick off.
Under the above circumstances, do you think he'll make Team Captain by next season if he has a monster year and is fully assimilated into the locker room?
