The Patriots finished off what could be their most significant addition to their coaching staff on Thursday, surprising everyone by hiring former NFL quarterback Alex Van Pelt as their offensive coordinator.

It sounds to me like Alex Van Pelt might not have been top of our list but he was the guy we could get because the job position was "unattractive" due to the fact that we lack a lot of talent on offense and it is likely to be a rebuild that doesn't have a quick turnaround time.

Not to mention some of these OC candidates wish to be head coaches soon, so this job doesn't exactly boost the resumes of those people to the next level any time soon.

I get it. Hopefully AVP does a great job for us. He does have the advantage of being a former player and having helped develop or at least worked with some great QBs in his time. So maybe he's the guy we need, especially if we draft a young QB whom we will need to develop well.
