Ryan Wendell re-signed

That's 850k too much, IMO. If you're in the business of lighting 850k on fire and throwing it in the garbage, then why not spend that money on LeGarrette Blount, or on Welker last year.

Welker was not needed as his production replicated on the field in another smurfs body.

Maybe. Is all of that reported 850k signing bonus really a singing bonus?

If it's a roster bonus that's contingent on being on the roster at the start of the season, I would be fine with that. Basically gives him a chance to earn his job in camp, but if he can't he's cut at no cost to the team. I don't remember a roster bonus ever being reported as a signing bonus, though.

I very much agree with my post. No signing bonus for this turkey. No roster bonus either. Just straight vet min baby.

He should have forfeited his right to a signing bonus. In fact he owes them a refund for his poor play.

Wow, this might have been an okay signing after the 2012 season, but you'd have thought re-signing him after this season would have cost a lot less. Not liking this

They need to deduct 50k for every sack he gives up.

I did not see this coming.

It's my hope that this is an insurance signing. Wendell is not a good center.

So they passed on the 2 sensible signings (Clemons, Blount) and signed this stiff?

I guess they felt the offseason was going too well, and they needed to screw it up a bit to keep it interesting.

BOOOOO this signing is a waste of cap money.

I have to think that 6.85 million is only if he plays at a Pro Bowl level the next two seasons. Has to be lower than that.

If he reaches incentives the deal is over 8m for two seasons. I guess BB really values continuity on the OL. I really feel like we could do better and are overpaying him as a 'known commodity'. Hopefully we draft a prospect who can grow into the position so we are in a place where we can cut Wendell next year, improve our cap situation, and have a more talented player ready to go in 2015.

Honestly, I don't feel that Wendell is better than Koppen was when he got released by us a few years back. So I'm not sure how to spin this deal positively. At least Brady knows what to expect next season... Duck for cover if the blitz is coming up the middle??

That last sentence just brought a tear to my eye. :(

I did not see this coming.

I actually thought we might. With DeGuglielmo coming in (Goog) to take over for Scar, it makes sense to keep the line intact.

This is a veteren line and they will be coaching him as much as he coaches them. Continuity is underrated and is necessary IMO for any incoming draftees to be successful. I like our backup situation as well with Cannon and Kline (gotta love former wrestlers).

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see us go OL late in the draft.

Signing a veteran Center in FA should've been the way to go.

They just did sign a veteran free agent center. Wendell has started 37 regular season NFL games, 32 in the last two seasons. That's a veteran NFL center.

Just because we don't watch every down of some other team and see the sacks their center gives up doesn't mean that some other JAG veteran center is better than Wendell.

In large part, the NFL is a question of whether or not the Pats can line up their JAGS and beat the other team's JAGs.

I have slim to no faith that Wendell can handle a good NT/DT. You only need to see the amount of help Mankins commits on Wendell's behalf.

The Patriots need an upgrade and they need it now. OL is not a place you want to fill with JAGS.

So I've had some time to calm down a little bit and think about this signing a little bit more clearly.

I still hate it.

Field Yates speculating the numbers might be wrong.

A note on Wendell's deal - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

In looking at the NFLPA information, it was noted that Wendell has a roster bonus of $12,500 per game for each season, which would, if he played all 16 games, equal $200,000 per year. It also lists an overall roster bonus of $2 million per season.

Wendell has been extremely durable (he's played all but six offensive snaps the past two seasons), making it even less likely that the team would institute a roster bonus of that figure.

It could be that the NFLPA records listed a roster bonus of $2 million inadvertently, as the figure perhaps should have been $200,000 total, not $2 million.

If so, Wendell's contract would have a maximum value of $4.55 million over two years. That number is closer to what we might have projected for Wendell to fetch in free agency.

Of course he is wrong about the contract. He is guessing wildly.

good that you agree with yourself, tell the other yourself that I agree with his post too.

If a mistake was made with roster bonus, Wendell's cap numbers goes to 1.625m. 2014 Cap space number goes to 8,039,036
