At the end of the Mac Jones era, opponents could reliably bank on three things when preparing for the Patriots.
Jones would respond poorly to pressure.
His receivers wouldn’t break free often enough from man coverage to hurt them.
And even if those receivers did spring free, their defense wouldn’t get beat deep. Because since Oct. 8, Jones had completed one deep ball, meaning in every midseason Patriots game, there might as well have been a brick wall 20 yards downfield that ran parallel to the line of scrimmage, boxing play in.
1 - I am still not convinced that Corky can read defenses. Knowing where your best option for success lies prior to the snap is paramount. Having no clue and trying to react to conditions is a recipe leading to chaos and blaming everyone in sight. Somebody has to drive and be in control of the car.
2 - Single coverage is open in the NFL unless your guy is locked down by a CB like Christian Gonzalez. There we are again, where is the best match up? Henry on a shorter DB or LB? Real NFL QBs beat defenses with great throws.
3 - Others here have pointed out that defenses crowded the LOS. The Pats could not run or pass because defenses had absolutely no fear of being beat deep. Please throw at us they thought to themselves.
By no means is the NE QB job settled, but the Pats would not be here in this situation without a certain Alabama QB as the starter.
