23 PTP Board/Draft thoughts

It wasn't 3 guards. It was 1 OG (Mafi), 1 OC/OG (Andrews), and 1 OG/OT (Sow). Claiming that they weren't needed is ignorance at it's finest. YTou talk about Onwenu, but ignore the fact that he's a UFA at the end of the year. You also have no idea if the Pats have tried to re-sign him already and whether or not Onwenu rebuffed them.

The Only Reserve IOL the Patriots had prior to the draft were Ferentz, Russey, Murray and Hines. Thinking that they couldn't be upgraded speaks volumes about your inability to evaluate the talent on the team. Andrews allows the team to part ways with Ferentz, who is 34. Sow or Mafi would allow the team to part ways with Murray, who is undersized. The 3 will also push Russey and Hines to improve or be cut.
To repeat and strongly agree with you and with Belichick. We needed upgrades inside help.

BACKUPS BEFORE THE DRAFT: Ferentz, Russey, Hines (IR) and Murray

PROBABLE BACKUPS AFTER THE DRAFT: Andrews, Sow, Mafi

Perry was available at 76 too, but Billy had, let's just say, other ideas about how to use the picks today...

Chocolate Gronk was also available there, as was fellow TE Tucker No Relation To Bob Kraft.

Either of them would've been Infinity Times better than Marty McPoo.

And likely to be injured at some point.

OTs is the weakest unit on the team right now, though TE after this year could be critical with your best signed player being Matt Sokol, one of the worst players in the league.

I suspect Bill is going to move to make the big nickel the new base defense, so really a hybrid LB/safety. Mapu will be great spying all the mobile QBs we see - his tape makes him look like a heat-seeking missile chasing QBs that bootleg.
He’ll need a year or two of development. But I can see him causing sleepless nights by QBs.
They did find a good blocking TE with a lot of upside. Introducing UDFA Johnny Lumpkin.
I predict Lumpkin makes the team. Great guy at a position of desperate need with Henry and Gesicki potentially being gone after the season.

Lumpkin is my pumpkin!

:)
Our gameday backup 2022 in OG was Ferentz. I guess that was OK, and didn't need to be upgraded.

Perhaps, we need to keep Ferentz for 2024 to backup OG, since we need to move at least one of 2024 starting OG's to OT.

Careful dude, DoucheBag doesn't agree with us!
Anyone with a modicum of sense disagrees with your "assessments". Broken clocks are more likely to be right than you.

Mapu played as a "ROVER" in college. Much akin to the "Big Nickel" we've seen from the Patriots. When you read up on him, you see that he excelled when put into that role over the traditional one.

What he got announced as doesn't matter much. It's a matter of where he'll line-up. Most every has him as a LB/S Hybrid in the same mold as Dugger. I asked about grooming him as a "FS" because, with his instincts and athletic ability, I see him as a potential successor to DMac.
He is not fast enough to play FS. His estimated 40 time from NFL Draftscout is 4.67. The Patriots typically employ two inside LBs. One is Bentley the other could be Mapu, especially on passing downs. He has the speed to cover TE and RBs out of the backfield. He practiced almost exclusively at the LB position in the Senior Bowl practices.

@Mark Morse -

It doesn't matter where he practiced at the Senior Bowl. Not one lick. Cole Strange practiced and played at Center. Other players have played out of position at the Senior Bowl so that teams could see what they offered if they weren't a "natural" fit for a particular position. Where NFLDraft scout "projected" his speed to be doesn't matter either. BTW, it's somewhat disingenuous to say that NFL Draftscout.com said he was a projected 4.67 when they give a range. That range is 4.58 to 4.76.

The Pats employ 2 sideline-to-sideline LBs. Bentley and Tavai are barely adequate and typically aren't there to make stops that go around the edge. Mapu has that ability, but Mapu played as a ROVER. He was the epitome of LB/S hybrid in college. What stands out to me is that Mapu plays significantly faster than a 4.67-40 would indicate. Because Mapu wasn't able to do any testing is why I asked @BaconGrundleCandy for his opinion on being a FS. Because I know that Mapu's recognition skills are highly touted and could possibly be as good as McCourty's. Granted, as a LB, if he's given the Green Dot eventually, he could do the same thing from a "LB" position.

OH. Adrian Phillips ran a 4.59-40. People said he couldn't be a safety either.

Phillips is a good comparison. Are you saying that he is fast enough to play free safety?

I see Mapu as being considered for reps at LB/SS, Dugger's role, and perhaps starting there in the future. I am reminded when we acquired Mills and many of thought that he was a future free safety (as I still think).

The Pats announced Mapu as a LB. Anything is possible, but I doubt FS.

This one still hurts me.

Kid is going to be a beast.

Article reads like a copy of N'Keal.

Carolina's newest weapon will likely never become a true burner of a deep threat, at least not as a primary facet of his game. Mingo has good but not great speed and lacks the twitchy quickness of the league's true home-run threats.

Good luck with that. A slow guy with no twitchy quickness as WR1?

If the kid is a beast it will be a slow, lumbering one, as stated in this puff piece.

As do I... He reminds me of the kid from Florida State during the 2014 draft, Telvin Smith... 6'3/220, had some good years for Jax (including the 2017 AFCCG) before retiring or something...Man/zone coverage specialist, plus was a screen-buster in the flat... We should all hope that McPoo provides for us what he provided for them.

I'm saying that I don't know if he is. Which is why I asked @BaconGrundleCandy for his opinion. When I watched the "highlights" I saw someone who has great instincts and excellent game speed. I didn't see him lined up against WR, but he did very well against RBs. And many RBs have similar speed to WR.

i personally love that Mapu is 6'3 , this should help covering TE/RB or hybrid TE/WR which would be great for us. I think we are set for covering WR with jonathan jones, jack jones, marcus jones, mills and gonzalez. Maybe Dugger or Phillips can move to FS too and Mapu can play the hybrid LB/S role
