I believe they could have gotten more in the off-season. Having said that if it became clear that Jimmy G was never going to sign any type of bridge contract they had to trade now or lose him and get nothing at the end of the year. There was no way they would franchise him and tie up $40 mill on the QB position between him and Brady.
The miscalculation came in the offseason when I believe there was a 1st rounder plus a 3 or a 4 on the table from the Browns.

I loved. They have $22,225,388 in cap space and only a few expensives FA'S, but they have a lot of money tied in LBTE incentives so they have to fill the roster with cheap talent. Jimmy is a great backup but the GOAT is still the better player and will be for the next 3/4 years. They will bring a cheap backup (Hoyer).

The trade is basically a mid #2 and mid #3 for Jimmy, it's a nice haul. Our picks: #1 #2(2) #3 #4(2) #6 and the the following FA's:

IMO they should flip this #2 pick for a mid #2 and #3 picks(looked the draft chart, that's the value). So they will have #1 #2(2) #3(2) #4(2) #6

Needs: QB(check)/CB(check)/DE/DT(check)/LB(check) - SS/TE Depth(both check)

T Solder - Tough decision. I would let him walk unless he accepts a reduced deal(Donald's Penn range - 9m).
T Waddle - Bring him back for 2/3m. He and Garcia will be our backups
T Fleming - Let him walk
TE Allen(He's not a FA but he will be cut). That will increase our cap in 5m, same amount due to Gronk for his incentives. So the cap stays the same. They need a second TE and they use our #4 to get one.
RB Lewis I like Lewis better. So he stays for 2/3m
RB Burkhead Let him walk. They already have Lewis, Gil and White + Bolden. Use our #4 and replace him
WR Danny Amendola - Bring him back 3m. Cut Dorsett will increase our cap in 1.6m
CB Butler They can't afford him and Solder. So let him walk. Use our #2a and pair him with Gilmore
CB Bademosi - Bring him back 2/3m
DL Marsh - Bring him back 2/3m
ST Ebner -Bring him back 2m
ST Bolden - Bring him back 1,5 m
ST Slater - Bring him back 2m
ST King - Bring him back 1,5m

For all those saying we should have got more. We had a better deal last April.

Just assume the Browns actually were going to trade us number 12 overall for him. This pick will be 20-25 picks lower. That's it by waiting that's all it cost him.

While waiting they tried to get creative to keep him and got 8 games insurance and only lose 20-25 spots in the draft.

The reports aren't that Bill offered him the moon to try to lure him to sign; everything is saying the team tried to get contract negotiations underway in the spring but then felt it would be "too difficult" to make a deal. If the team truly considered his talent comparable to Brady's, they'd have kept him, picked up talks in the offseason, done what they needed to do, but they certainly wouldn't have just shrugged their shoulders midseason and shipped him off.

Wrong. If BB offered him "the moon" we wouldn't know anyway -- he very well might have. What we DO know is that they negotiated earnestly with him over the spring and summer. They obviously wanted him badly enough to forego ANYTHING they could've got for him previously, which likely was more than what they just received from the 49ers. What skewed things is the conclusion by all concerned that JG wants to play NOW, in which case nothing short of the franchise tag would have keept him in New England. The Patriots even looked into doing that, but after careful consideration of how that would hamstring them financially in free agency -- and the elephant in the room of JG wanting to be a starter with Brady still viable -- they did the only thing they could to get some return for him. What happened was as much JG's choice as it was the Patriots' and also due to Brady proving he still has it for a while yet.

Agreed, and BB then sent JG to a NFC-W team that's a few years away from being a factor. It all makes sense to me.

As has been mentioned, if Hoyer was included in the trade, he'd count in the Compensatory Pick equation. Just like Sopoaga did a few years back. This way Hoyer gets his guaranteed money AND another contract and the Pats don't have to worry about losing a draft pick..

That's the thing, the Browns 'analytics' strategy sounds like a winner till you realize that someone still has to pick the right players with the right attitudes for it all to work out. I'm sure Jamie Collins looks great via analytics. Everywhere else, not so much.

If only CLE could find a young defensive minded coach with an economics degree and a big chip on his shoulder!

I see it as a good deal all around. JG can now showcase what he can do. 49ers get a promising young QB. Pats get an early 2 for a guy who wasn't going to play, wasn't going to re-sign and probably doesn't lead them to another SB win if they keep him of rate last 8 games.

Pats got 3 1/2 years of JG and a second round pick about 30 spots earlier than where JG was picked in 2014. Not bad at all.
