The jets sucks but enough is enough!!Gotta beat these guys this year:mad:

Sanchez isn't very good with the throws outside the 26 yd td was a rainbow lots of slants again.

from TGG...this is RICH! :rofl::rofl:

You and Mick nailed it. I swear fo' god we have probably the best D-line in football right now, with the players we can rotate in and keep the line fresh, it's gonna be damn hard to run on us.

:bricks:

... ken, well thought out and detailed analysis ...

... i'll note below the particulars where i disagree ...

I think the Jets suffered some downgrades at the WR, DL, and OL.

WR

... i believed plax & mason would be an even exchange for BE & cotch ... with plax starting the season maybe at 75% and hopefully advancing towards a 95% mark by the end of the regular season ... after watching mason & sanchez's vibe together week1 & last nights performance by plax i was amazingly pleased ... if that continues next week against the giants i may actually swing the opposite direction of you towards an improvement ... for now i will simply disagree with your projection of a downgrade and call it a wash ...

DL

... the only difference with the starters is we traded an established vet ellis for a rookie 1st round draft pick mo wilkerson ...

... this was a roll the dice move ... ellis was not performing at his peak level ... but he still was able to bring it when it mattered against the pats in our playoff match last season ... i personally wanted him back to mentor the kid but not at 5 mil ... we didn't get much push from the front 3 last year so most likely this, along with watching mo's performance before releasing ellis, as a jets fan i am willing to give rex the benefit of the doubt & trust his d-line judgment until i see otherwise ...

OL

... the big difference this year is RT ... wayne hunter in for damien woody ... woody was still solid runblocking & steady against weak or average passrushers ... but he was beginning to show some signs of age in getting beat to the corner by elite edge rushers ... he also is coming off both arthroscopic knee surgery & torn achilles tendon injuries at the end of last season ... another roll the dice vs. solid but declining player decision ...

... o line was one of the jets biggest strengths last season ... as a jets fan i want to see if hunter will be able to match woody's performance before getting hurt ... but am willing to wait and see how more of his performance before i say it's a step down ...

(will need to come back later to comment the rest)

The jets using lots of quick slants so far and I also noticed a bubble screen, like the Pats use, used against the bengals yesterday. Looks like the jets are trying to take a page, or several pages, out of the Patriots offense playbook.

The Pats D will benefit from this when they play the jets. They are pretty used to seeing the quick slants during practice.

The jets O line has not looked good so far. Sancheeze getting pressure and LT getting shut down on the run game. If what we have seen so far with the Pats D line carries over to the regular season then the Pats D line will be a monster. And we have not even seen Haynesworth yet. And what about Ellis. Not a good sign for the jets offense. I don't think there will be very many opportunities to air the ball out deep to Plax or Holmes. I see Mr. Carter causing all sorts of problems for the jets line.

All in all, I think the jets have taken a step back this season. I think they will still do well but I feel a little more certain this year then previous two years that the Lombardi trophy will not be making a home in jet town this season. However, the Patriots might want to start making room for it, imo!

+++Nice write up+++ Thanks, and I hate that thread too.

... guess coloring of facts is my main area of contention ... naturally you will view thing in a patriot hue as i will a jets hue ...

the key for the Jets, if they are to succeed is having Sanchez make a quantum leap in his third year

... i agree sanchez needs to take a step forward this year for the jets to win the superbowl ...

... i would look at step forward being 5% improvement on completion % and stats equalling a 5-10% improvement in td/int ratio, as well as a 5-10% improvement in redzone td's ... i certainly do not think a
quantum leap"
forward is needed ... but wouldn't be adverse to it happening  ...

1. the Jets will live and die with Mark Sanchez this season.

... the jets will live & die with DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE ... running game & sanchez making the above reasonable improvements will be important as well
... but make no mistake ... since rex got here the Jets are all about DEFENSE ... and will be so in 2011 as well ...

BOTTOM LINE - To date...and that is an important consideration...Sanchez hasn't shown a marked improvement in his accuracy
(quote location moved to relate to my return comments)

In the game (sanchez) was 12 for 20, a respectable 60%.

... he also was 6/7 for 43 yards week 1 vs. houston ...

... as big tuna used to say ... you are what your record says you are ...

... sanchez is 18 for 27 with 2 td's & 0 int's combining his 2 preseason performances ... i certainly would love to see that trend continue ...

However just like last season he was consistently bailed out by some very good catches by his WR.

... which is it? did the jets downgrade at WR? or are the WR's consistently bailing out their QB by making very good catches? ...

Even the TD to Plex was more about the catch than the throw.

... loved that pass & catch ... plax was amazing with how he adjusted to the ball in heavy rain & body controlled himself to stay inbounds & maintain possession all the way through ... sanchez put the ball to the perfect spot with a defender coming right up the guy into his face ... i think you are fooling yourself if you are not willing to give sanchez credit for that play as well ...

... he certainly has had some miscommunications with the wr's & te's ... having new wr's most likely will lead to some of that in the beginning of the season as well ... the td to burress though is one he deserves credit for ...

2. Plex was very good, no other way to say it. However I STILL think, even at his most effective, Plex isn't an upgrade. He isn't the "field stretcher" threat Edwards was, and while an excellent redzone threat, not better than Edwards who was also an excellent redzone threat.

... jury is still out on plax until we have a larger sample size ... but i could not have asked for more in his 1st performance after being locked up for 2 years than what i saw ... one of the jets biggest weaknesses last season was redzone td % ... this move, as well as mason were made to improve that % this season (along with the hoped for 5-10% reasonable improvement from sanchez)

on the plus side, Cromartie is still Cromartie. He has trouble with anyone who is quick and can get off the LOS

... i will happily take cro as my #2 cb any day of the week & twice on sundays ... he is a long strider though and is def better against the randy moss type than the wes welker type ... would like to see him initiate contact at the LOS more and not give wr's the free release that he often does ...

4. Some of the bad things, that Jet fans should be worrying about.

a. Their OL had a real bad day.

... o-line has been poor both preseason games ... that i would chalk up to mangold being out week 1 & moore being out week 2 ... vlad ducasse has been horrible so far ... our starting 5 should be fine ... depth is where we are in big trouble ... wouldn't mind "big wood" getting talked back as a potential backup ... or another vet from the final round of preseason cuts ...

c. Based on last night, this is NOT going to be a great NFL offense. The Jets are going to have to be a top defense AGAIN this year if they have hopes for a championship run. That offense isn't a BAD one, but there are a dozen or more that are better.....again...so far.

... jets are not a great offensive team ... we are in many ways the inverse of the patriots ... we are a great defensive team & need to offense to perform reasonably better than last season ...

d. Their Kicking game specialists are erratic. Not good in an area where consistency is the key to keep your job.. Folk kicked a 50 yder....yet missed badly on a 40 yder....just like last year.

... kicker & punter spots both have battles going on ... hasn't seemed like any of the competitors have truly distinguished themselves yet ...

And love em or hate em, they ARE the team we have to get by to win the division. its the first step

... as are the pats for jets fans ...

... again, well written stuff ken ...

......I hate the Jets sucks thread, or at least the title. Its just seems so "jet fan-like", with people spouting baseless hatred for no apparent reason. OTOH, it IS interesting to comment on the team which currently provokes the most interest....and who is our main division rival, and the reason why so many of us hated the end of last season. So if we are going to discuss the current state of the Jets,I think it deserves its own thread. But if the mods want to merge it, so be it.

Disclaimer: Prior to the preseason, I am on record as predicting a step back by the Jets this season. While I think the Pats have made some significant upgrades to the team, I think the Jets were relegated to keeping as much of last year's team together as they could, and actually suffered some downgrades at the WR, DL, and OL.

Oh Ken, always verbose and pedantic, with a biased eye, but I'll give you props for trying.

Not sure why anybody would think the Jets take a step back, bringing back the core of their team, which they've done, especially the young core when you consider Harris, Holmes, Cromartie, Eric Smith, and bringing back less heralded players like Hunter, Pool, and Donald Strickland.

It's the same team Ken. Cotchery wanted out, wants to be a starter, team was concerned about his long term health, his back surgery, etc. He was a very solid player, a possession WR, a better person than player, they are a dime-a-dozen, as you mention below, Kerley is a nice prospect for the present and future as a slot WR. But how can you suggest the Jets downgraded by replacing Cotchery for this year in Derrick Mason? He's a faster Cotchery, even at his age, he can still move.

Braylon has been well documented, sure, he bounced back nicely, I thought he was a huge pick-up, a very good WR, but the guy just can't stay out of trouble off the field, and the fact that his locker room wanted no part of him raised the red flags. They all wanted Holmes back, he was the key.

Burress has already shown that the guy hasn't seemed to miss a beat, looks to be in great shape, have a great attitude, and wants to prove to the world he's back, he's playing with a chip on his shoulder, and that is not good news for fans of the opposing team. I still think it will take a couple of games for him to get his legs under him and wear the rust off, that's a given, but the guy in his first game already looks to be the same beast of a player he was.

Losing Brad Smith, their only other notable loss is hardly a key loss. He was a great ST's player, a complimentary WR, and was effective running the wildcat, not much else. Shawn Ellis is a solid player still, but the Jets have completely revamped their DL and upgrade the talent. They were also not happy with Ellis' practice habbits. I actually thought it was a good sign for NE, but at the same time, the move didn't make sense considering who else they have playing on the DL. He's not the same player, but can still be a good veteran. The Jets have very promising talent in their 1st round pick, Wilkerson, Kenrick Ellis, their 3rd round pick, and they have a couple of additional players they like in Pitoitua and Dennis Dixon.

I thought the key for the Jets, if they are to succeed is having Sanchez make a quantum leap in his third year to overcome those issues. So given that here is what I saw after watching the game on line (Bengal local feed) into the middle of the 3rd quarter.

1. the Jets will live and die with Mark Sanchez this season. His play in this game, at least, tells me that HE did NOT make a quantum leap in his most glaring issue, his accuracy. Now lets get this straight. I don't think Sanchez sucks. I think he is a good QB....not ELITE. He is good enough to take a great team to the superbowl, his is NOT good enough to "carry" a lesser team there.

In the game he was 12 for 20, a respectable 60%. However just like last season he was consistently bailed out by some very good catches by his WR. His first pass of the game was a perfect example. He completed a nice in cut to Burress, but the ball was behind him forcing Burress to make a Price-like maneuver to make the grab and effectively eliminated any chance for YAC. Later he converted a 3rd down with a quick simple 4 yd out to Holmes, but the pass was inaccurate forcing Holmes to have completely turn his body to make the catch. Even the TD to Plex was more about the catch than the throw.

BTW- he made some very nice throws as well, especially a long sideline pass to Holmes, the TD to Holmes, and a couple of nice passes to Keller. Again he is NOT a bad QB....as much as we'd like him to be. That said he also had 2 picks dropped.

Live and die by Sanchez? Uh no, the Jets will still be a very good running team, their weapons in the passing game only figures to improve. Sanchez is going into his 3rd year, he will only get better, it's not a reach to suggest as much, he's performed at an elite level in the playoffs the last two years, despite inconsistency in the regular season, but when it matters, he raises his play, that is the mark of a franchise QB on the rise. The leadership he showed during the lockout was well regarded by the organization and his teammates, this is his team now, his potential is unlimited.

Keller will be that much better, and more integrated, and as you eluded to rather impressively, Cumberland is the player to watch out for at TE, this kid has serious talent, runs under 4.5 at 6'4 260 lbs, he's emerged in the pre-season. What Pats fans should be worried about is the Jets hiring former Colt OC, Tom Moore as an assistant. He will help Schotty Jr, he will help Sanchez, he himself has already said the sky is the limit with Sanchez,, and he loves the TE, that is where Cumberland will come in, Moore likes double TE sets, I think that will be a wrinkle the Jets explore this year.

BOTTOM LINE - To date...and that is an important consideration...Sanchez hasn't shown a marked improvement in his accuracy

2. I was predicting that Plexico wouldn't be effective and a significant downgrade over Braylon Edwards. Er....I might have to rethink that a bit.;) Plex was very good, no other way to say it. However I STILL think, even at his most effective, Plex isn't an upgrade. He isn't the "field stretcher" threat Edwards was, and while an excellent redzone threat, not better than Edwards who was also an excellent redzone threat.

3. There were a number of guys here who liked McElroy late in this draft. Based on what I've seen in 2 games, there were right. Very poised, very calm under pressure, seems like a good decision maker. In due time he could be THEIR version of Brian Hoyer,

4. Some of the other good things I saw..if you are a Jets fan. That ikid Kerley is a very nice slot WR prospect. Lots of quickness and goes for the ball aggressively. I think he's going to be a good pro...just not this year.

b. they have a 2nd TE named Cumberland who in the 2 Jets games I've seen has flashed well. Very much a Keller clone. Good speed, good receiver, blocking.....not so much. I think they are going to try to get both on the field this season at the same time.

Not bad, all fair, except for the comment on Sanchez. He's having his best pre-season since becoming a pro, not sure what more you want in a QB last night, playing in a monsoon... He had a 121 QB rating, almost 200 yds passing and 2 TD's with 60% comp... C',mon...

Plax was never a burner, never a field stretcher, but he gets separation, you saw it last night. He's a jumbo Jet who can run, but he won't need to blow by a DB, his game is his physicality, he's a matchup nightmare because of his size, and we saw in his first game back, he still has it, despite some obvious rust. Plax is a good route runner, he knows how to use his body to create seperation, not just with his legs. The Jets don't need him to stretch the field, they have Holmes and Mason to do that, and Kerley to play the underneath along with their TE's, we know about Keller, but if Cumberland emerges, that is a very potent passing offense that has some good potential. It should be noted that Sanchez performance last night was in a rain storm, I would think this makes the passing performance he orchestrated that much more impressive.

c. No one flashed on their DL last night, but no one ran against them either. Much like last season, the DL was VERY good against the run, but didn't generate any pass rush by itself. That's better than I thought, since they are playing a lot of young inexperienced guys. So far, not as big a weakness as I hoped

The DL will be much improved this year, they have enough experience in players like Pouha and Devito, and to some extent Dixon and Pitoitua, and the young kids have been impressive early, they looked great against the Texans last week. Sure, their will be growing pains, as with any young player, but they will be much more talented, and much deeper. The problem with the DL last year is that they wore out, Jenkins being out eventually hurt them because the Jets were only rotating 6 players, this year, they'll probably be rotating 8.

Part 2

d. Revis is STILL Revis..... but on the plus side, Cromartie is still Cromartie. He has trouble with anyone who is quick and can get off the LOS

Revis is having his best camp yet, and he started slow last year because of his holdout, and missing training camp, he probably wasn't right until around mid-season, not the case this year. I think you underestimate Cro, the guy is an extreme athlete for a CB, and played well in his first year in Rex's system. He's had a good camp and is playing with a chip on his shoulder, I think with a year under his belt under Rex, he will be improved. The secondary will be improved this year because of players like Cro and Pool now going into their second year with Rex, and the rest of the guys going into their 3rd year, their communication will be better, and we've already seen they will be improved as a unit, teams haven't been able to do anything against them, despite the fact it's pre-season.

4. Some of the bad things, that Jet fans should be worrying about.

a. Their OL had a real bad day. LT had 9 carries for just 16 yds...and I was surprised it was that much. The Jets a ZERO running attack in the first half. Not only that, they were positively porous in base pass protection The only time Sanchez truly had time to throw was when he went to play action. The worse offenders were Ducasse and Hunter, though on a replay they showed DBrick beaten badly, and another showed Mangold manhandled

Again, if Sanchez is to improve he's going to have to do it with a weaker OL and no speed on the outside (though that didn't seem to stop the Pats last season ;) )

It's the same OL as last year. They ran most of the first half with 3 WR sets. No game planning, no nothing, to me, they were working on the passing game and the new players at WR, namely Plax. They rarely played with a FB, and rarely with double TE's. I wouldn't put too much stock in their performance, they have the same OL as last year. The Turner injury hurts, but it appears he'll only miss the first month of the season or so, so they may go with a replacement player until he returns.

b. Their first offense was for the most part ineffective. Their defense, or rather the embarrassingly inept Bengal offense (their best player on offense was their punter) constantly gave them great field position. Their first 10 points were gifts from the Bengals. Their only long drive came at the end of the half (99yds) and produced most of the stats that allowed Sanchez to have those respectable numbers It included 3 long passes to wide open receivers

c. Based on last night, this is NOT going to be a great NFL offense. The Jets are going to have to be a top defense AGAIN this year if they have hopes for a championship run. That offense isn't a BAD one, but there are a dozen or more that are better.....again...so far.

I don't know what the hell you are trying to spin here. Sanchez had almost 200 yds passing in his half of play, as mentioned they weren't really emphasizing the running game, and they were also without their starting RG, Moore, and their starting RB, Greene.

And what the hell does "long passes to wide open receivers" mean? Doesn't that mean they did their job and showed their talent? Or that Sanchez ran the play action effectively? You're reaching here, this offense will be improved this year.

d. Their Kicking game specialists are erratic. Not good in an area where consistency is the key to keep your job.. Folk kicked a 50 yder....yet missed badly on a 40 yder....just like last year.

So there you have it. One person's view of what I saw in the Jets/Bengals scrimmage And love em or hate em, they ARE the team we have to get by to win the division. its the first step

Kicking will be fine, not worried about the the kicking game in a rainstorm. Folk had a decent bounce back year, and IMO will return. I am concerned about punter, Conley has a big leg but is erratic. I think it's possible the Jets could either bring back Weatherford, or if the Giants keep him, they could bring in the guy they cut, their draft pick Hodge.

The one area on the team that worries me most is the pass rush, a healthy Pace this year should help. Improved talent on the DL will also help. The player I'm really keeping my eye on, and who could turn out to be quite a steal for the Jets if Ryan can get him on track, is the recent pickup of Aaron Maybin, he's exactly what the Jets needed to address, the OLB position, and especially pass rushing. He did more in his 5 plays last night that Gholston did in 3 years. I know he's coming over from Buffalo, and they gave up on him, but there were things that went on that didn't get a lot of publicity, like the death of his son after birth last year. I thought Buffalo gave up on him way too soon, you don't give up on a player with his measurables, a former #11 overall pick after just two seasons. You can make the comparisons to Gholston, but the only comparison were their draft statuses, both were picked high, and so far, both haven't done anything with it. If you watch each player though, Maybin has the tenacity, speed, and talent that Gholston would only dream of having. He also works hard, and has solid character. He's young though, and a bit raw, but he certainly put on a display in limited time last night, I'm hoping Ryan can get him on track.

Jets suck always have and will o and btw Cincinnati looks like a top 3 draft pick team
