Re: Official 2007 NFL Draft 6th Round Discussion

Corey Hilliard OT 6'5", 308 OKLAHOMA STATE

From Scouts:
Strengths: Possesses good lower body strength, keeps legs driving after making contact and can drive defenders off the ball. Plays with a mean streak and is relentless once in position. Plays with a good motor and looks to throw blocks downfield. Possesses good bulk and is capable of holding his own working against bull rushers. Has good upper body strength and can extend arms once in position. Shows good awareness, keeps head up and generally does a good job of picking up stunts. Can line up at guard and is somewhat versatile.
Weaknesses: Not a great athlete and has limited range. He's high cut and is not a natural knee-bender. Lacks elite initial quickness and is going to have some problems preventing edge rushers from turning the corner. Doesn't have great lateral mobility, can lose balance when forced to change directions quickly and is vulnerable to double moves. Though durability isn't a substantial concern at this point, he missed two games in 2003 season because of a leg injury.
Overall: Hilliard saw extensive action as a backup early in his true freshman season in 2003 then made six straight starts at right tackle before suffering a leg injury against Texas that forced him to miss the final two contests. In 2004, he moved to left tackle and started all 12 games for the Cowboys. He once again started every game (11) at left tackle as a junior in 2005. Hilliard started all 13 games during the 2006 season, seeing action at both left tackle and right tackle, earning an AP All-Big 12 first-team selection for 2006.
Hilliard is limited athletically and he will need to be in a confined area in order to succeed in the NFL. The upside is that he is a big, strong and physical lineman that plays with a mean streak. He has spent most of his collegiate career playing tackle but he projects better as a guard and/or right tackle reserve in the NFL. Hilliard should get selected in the mid-to-late round range of the 2007 draft.

Re: Official 2007 NFL Draft 6th Round Discussion

I believe that we have nine players who can play safety (including Scott and Gay). Why would we need any more in the 6th round?

So much for the Pats thinking that they were solid at OT. MAN, taking TWO of them.. Definitely didn't see that coming with the needs at LB, CB, and safety.

Re: Official 2007 NFL Draft 6th Round Discussion

Oscar Lua.

:( Yuck.

Re: Official 2007 NFL Draft 6th Round Discussion

Oscar Lua ILB USC Sweet! He's a great run stuffer. Back in febuary I said something about NE picking him up in the late rounds or UDFA. I had gone away from him over the past month, but now I wish I hand't.

Re: 7th round discussion

Mayock calls Lua, "a between the tackle thumper." Apparently he lost his starting job his senior year.

Camp Fodder...we may have needs but they're not going to be addressed in the sixth round of this crappy draft.

Re: Official 2007 NFL Draft 6th Round Discussion

These guys will be in the same situation as the players last eyar, including the UDFA's. May be one or two will make the 53 and one or two the practice squad or not. First they will need the UDFA's that we already have: Mays, Woods, Alexander, Spann and the rest.

Re: Official 2007 NFL Draft 6th Round Discussion

Hairston -- one of the private workouts. Funny how no one's mentioned the Pioli connection.

Re: Official 2007 NFL Draft 6th Round Discussion

I think Lua actually ahs a shot as a run stuffer. he is probably better than Alexander in that role.

Seems like injuries are his problem. Solve durability issues and he seems like a player.

From Scouts:
Oscar Lua, ILB 6'0", 238 USC
Strengths: He possesses good size, including adequate-to-good height and solid bulk. Instinctive player that will read his keys and react quickly. A downhill striker type versus the run. Fills hard and shows the consistent ability to match up physically in the phone booth. Possesses a solid base and good upper body power. He plays with a great motor, wraps up well as a tackler and also shows good short-area power to explode through his hits. He is instinctive and gets decent depth in his drops in zone coverage. He is much more effective working forward than he is turning and running. Shows good initial burst and anticipation as a blitzer. Also impresses with his ability to find a crease and to get off of blocks once reached. Plays the game with great toughness and aggressiveness. Very competitive.

Weaknesses: Lacks ideal starting experience. Possesses below average top-end speed and change-of-direction skills. He's limited athletically. His range versus the run is limited to inside the tackle-box for the most part. He also is a mismatch in certain man-to-man coverage situations. Lacks the fluidity and burst and cover enough ground as a cover-2 MLB in the NFL. Also has some durability concerns.

Overall: Lua appeared in 11 games in 2002 during his true freshman season, finishing the year with 13 total tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, one fumble recovery, and one forced fumble. He tore ligaments in his right knee during bowl practice that required off-season surgery and forced him to miss spring practice in 2003. Lua received a medical redshirt in 2003 after playing in one game (BYU) and re-injuring his knee. In 2004, he recorded 13 total tackles and one tackle for loss as a reserve linebacker and on special teams. Lua then played in 12 games (11 starts) in 2005, missed the Cal game with a sprained left knee, and registered 66 total tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, one interception, one fumble recovery, and two forced fumbles. He appeared in 12 of 13 games in 2006, making just three starts as he was relegated to a backup role, recording 36 total tackles, and two tackles for loss.
Lua stepped in for departed MLB Lofa Tatupu (Seahawks) in 2005 and was able to establish himself as a powerful run-plugging middle linebacker. He plays the game with great intensity and he possesses the size, strength and instincts to find a niche in the NFL as a reserve linebacker that contributes on special teams. However, his lack of speed and athletic ability put a low ceiling on his potential. Durability issues cost him his starting job as a senior and in all likelihood robbed him of any chance he had to be drafted in 2007.

Re: Official 2007 NFL Draft 6th Round Discussion

What were they saying?

Maynock was defending the Pats, saying that we should stop focusing on the Moss trade because it needs to be about football, not about character issues, and Shefter was disagreeing.

Wilcots was basically saying that the Pats will be challenged to keep their locker room in line this year, because they have "so many character issues"

Re: Official 2007 NFL Draft 6th Round Discussion

Corey Hilliard - OT - OSU
Primarly a RT at OSU, but also played LT and can play guard.
Started 35 of 42 games he played in.

Re: Official 2007 NFL Draft 6th Round Discussion

I think they would have taken Bishop if he had slipped past the Packers.

What character issues? Who was arrested?

Re: Official 2007 NFL Draft 6th Round Discussion

Wilcots is a rumpswabber...He and Borges are bestest buddies...

Why even listen to him....

he listed Moss, Meriweather, Stallworth, and Washington as the guys that they will struggle to keep in line.
