Re: Official 2007 NFL Draft 6th Round Discussion
Corey Hilliard OT 6'5", 308 OKLAHOMA STATE
From Scouts:
Strengths: Possesses good lower body strength, keeps legs driving after making contact and can drive defenders off the ball. Plays with a mean streak and is relentless once in position. Plays with a good motor and looks to throw blocks downfield. Possesses good bulk and is capable of holding his own working against bull rushers. Has good upper body strength and can extend arms once in position. Shows good awareness, keeps head up and generally does a good job of picking up stunts. Can line up at guard and is somewhat versatile.
Weaknesses: Not a great athlete and has limited range. He's high cut and is not a natural knee-bender. Lacks elite initial quickness and is going to have some problems preventing edge rushers from turning the corner. Doesn't have great lateral mobility, can lose balance when forced to change directions quickly and is vulnerable to double moves. Though durability isn't a substantial concern at this point, he missed two games in 2003 season because of a leg injury.
Overall: Hilliard saw extensive action as a backup early in his true freshman season in 2003 then made six straight starts at right tackle before suffering a leg injury against Texas that forced him to miss the final two contests. In 2004, he moved to left tackle and started all 12 games for the Cowboys. He once again started every game (11) at left tackle as a junior in 2005. Hilliard started all 13 games during the 2006 season, seeing action at both left tackle and right tackle, earning an AP All-Big 12 first-team selection for 2006.
Hilliard is limited athletically and he will need to be in a confined area in order to succeed in the NFL. The upside is that he is a big, strong and physical lineman that plays with a mean streak. He has spent most of his collegiate career playing tackle but he projects better as a guard and/or right tackle reserve in the NFL. Hilliard should get selected in the mid-to-late round range of the 2007 draft.
