Pats trade Jacoby Brissett to the Colts for Phillip Dorsett

I like this trade. Dorsett is young, fast, a returner and has a decently high ceiling as wr. win win.
Not a good track record as a returner, only handled a few, muffed two, lost one. Was never used in that role again after 2015. Has world-class speed, maybe we can coach him up. He was better as a wr.

i dont like this trade. i wanted them to hold onto three qbs for one more year. i think brisset is going to be a really good qb. and im not thrilled with the return. jag.

And we picked Brown over Landon Collins, who has developed into a top 5 safety in the league, and was pretty much a sure lock pick coming out of Bama. just imagine our secondary with him in it.

Yeah but what position would Collins have played? Chung's in the box position? I'd rather pay Chung money than have to poney up for what Collins will be asking for.

I think the whole idea is he is a work-in-progress. which is fine. returner may be 'by committee' for a while until someone steps up. Dola can help out with PR.

People seem to have the wrong idea of what Edelman's been doing for this team. He's not Welker. He doesn't live in the slot and go outside occasionally. He spends about half of his time on the outside. The key is the productivity when he does go to the slot.

Could Patriots WR Julian Edelman see more time in the slot?
Can't argue with that. Edelman is definitely different than Welker. But Hogan is Welker's complete opposite. I still see Edelman's greatest asset as his ability to get open quick. Hogan's greatest asset is his ability down the field. I believe Cooks' ability makes him the more likely replacement for some of Edelman's production.

Ron Brace may have been drafted for need, and it didn't work out.

He was more likely traded for his size weight and potential, unless you think he was expected to beat Wilfork out. He also has been known to draft similar players to those in contract negotiations.

He simply does not draft based on one factor period and he drafts differently based on the depth/age of current roster and finances.

So been doing a little reading on Dorsett and not seeing much to ease the concern for a legit, proven PR

Thoughts?

Standard BB-speak: the Pats will get him into the facility and see what he can do.

The Pats were almost forcing Cyrus Jones to be the PR this year, so "proven" isn't what they were going for. They're trying to get an upside depth player onto the active roster and into the game.

That's my read as well

Brissett is a slower windup, less accuracy, no short touch QB.

That's exactly what the Patriots don't want out of a QB. They gambled on a Ryan Mallett with a winning personality. Apparently, they decided the success percentage chance of modifying his on-field game was not high enough to justify keeping him under the current circumstances, no matter how much they may have loved the guy outside the lines.

No statistical indication he's even average as a returner, but limited sample.

Anyone who remotely believes "rumors" of a high pick DB getting cut after one season is an Idiot, plain and simple.

Look at him now, First team All pro, and PFF's 3rd highest graded overall safety.

Fyi, NY tried to use him more of a FS in his rookie year, and he struggled. Like i told a poster above, he is not a FS, but he can play in that role when needed.

That doesnt change that you are rewriting history calling him a sure thing. After a year he was considered a bust and what he did afterwards doesnt change that. Its easy to call someone a sure thing in retrospect.

Right now, he's one of the best defensive players in the NFL

Who cares ? Point is that he was not the sure thing that someone around here claims him to be.

I may be making the wrong argument. I'll just leave it with something more practical and measurable: When the heat is on and TB needs to get the ball out quickly, I'm betting that he's going to Cooks, Dola, and Gronk before looking Hogan's way. And that, to me, is the biggest thing that needs replacing with Edelman out.

Could they be thinking Amendola take on that responsibility full time and limit his WR snaps?

Not a fan of this trade.

I'll take a flyer and predict that by the end of this season
  1. Brissett will have Luck's job
  2. Dorsett will be game day inactive.
Well if Luck is injured it's possible and the season starting in less than a week I can see Dorsett not being activated right off. I think they will though if maybe just for punt returns. I'd be surprised to see him inactive though. This was a serious move. Why would they waste it?
