If Belichick believes that he was capable of putting up such numbers, why would he wait until game 11 to start him after Belichick has guaranteed he would be fired.

Belichick started Brady over Bledsoe. I doubt he would have been afraid to pull Mac if he thought Zappe was any good.

I've been a Mac supporter all the way until Germany @Colts. But it's over for him in NE.
And I'm happy to be proven wrong about Zappe, but I have 0% belief that he'll turn into anything.

I really don't think you have to worry about being proven wrong.

I could see Mac being sent to wherever JMD gets a OC job next year, or stay here 1 more year as a backup IF there's a total regime change.

But, IF BB slips by the noose, I think he'll go back to what he always did...
1. sign a vet QB who can manage an offense (Cousins, Mayfield, Siemian)
2. trade down - draft 1-3 rd. OL/DL, draft a 3-4 round QB to compete with vet, draft a TE, Edge
3. sign FA WR, RB

I think Jones has shown enough to at least be a half decent backup ala Hoyer. Guys like that have some staying power in the NFL.

I saw enough of Zappe last week. He stares down his receivers. It will not end well. He should have learned this skill set by now.
That being said the Chargers D is bad and they are traveling west to east playing the early game. So he could win this one.
No matter who starts next Thursday it will be ugly. Pittsburgh's D is one of the best in the league.

What if Zappe looks competent against them??

He handles pressure better than Mac, is awful at throwing downfield his athleticism makes Mac look like Cam Newton in his prime.

They dumbed down the playbook for him and one game they ran the ball and managed his throws. His shelf life wasn't for very much longer if he continued to start.

And who said Belichick was an incompetent boob?!? His problem is more his stubborness in not being willing to adapt to today's NFL. I never said he cannot judge his roster even if he cannot evaluate talent coming out of college. Besides O'Brien is the guy who calls the plays and he doesn't trust Zappe to throw down the field.

If “dumbing it down” was a real thing, teams would do it all the time. The Pat’s would have dumbed it down for Mac, the 49ers for Trey Lance, the Jets for Zach Wilson… hell, everyone can be good as long as we dumb it down.

“Dumb it down” is how media apologists for Mac explained why Zappe looked so good and Mac led the entire NFL in interceptions. It was typical media crap… blaming everyone for Mac’s terrible play but him.

Get a clean break from Mac, move him at the draft for an old kicking tee.

Bring back Zappe, Grier and a first round pick. Let the older guys play until the rookie is ready and takes the job.

The process is the same for every team.

I would keep Grier, but I think Zappe is useless. I agree with signing a decent vet, and using their first pick on a QB

Zappe is probably out of the league after this season. I'm not that optimistic about Grier but maybe he'll be a camp invite longshot ala McSorely.

It’s funny, our resident clown poster here insists I’m a “Zappy fanboy” when all I’ve ever said is he’s a complete unknown and the small sample size we have of him as a starter has been promising.

Like I said earlier, some people here better hope Zappe doesn’t look good or eventually great. Those predictions will look pretty stupid…

He didn’t start, he played half a game after getting minimal practice reps to prepare all week.
